Interview with Dani Nagel (from the archives, I believe 2017)
Dani Roxanne Nagel, a.k.a the “#graphicteegirl”, is the founder of the clothing company Dazey LA. Prior to starting Dazey LA in 2016, Dani worked both freelance and full time designing for companies like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Forever21, Macy's, Pac Sun, Kohl's, Hot Topic, Truly Madly Deeply, and many more. I discovered Dazey LA on Instagram, where they currently have 25.5k followers and growing! In this interview, Dani and I discuss her artistic roots, feminism, the inspiration for Dazey LA, social media, tips on being a girl boss, and more.
T: Where are you from?
D: I was born in L.A., but I grew up in Lake Arrowhead, which is a small mountain town pretty close to L.A.
T: Have you always been fashionable? Or do you look back at old pictures and say, “What on earth was I wearing back then?”
D: I always liked to think I was fashionable, and I always cared about fashion, but it took me a few years to get good at it.
T: When did art first start playing a major role in your life?
D: Art’s always been there. The fashion thing? That took time to develop. But the art has been there since I was a kid. I was drawing pictures, doing art galleries in my living room. My whole family is basically made up of artists. My grandma’s an artist, my aunt’s an interior designer, my other aunt’s an actress. So it’s been instilled in me since I was a kid.
T: Where did you get your degree in fashion?
D: I went to a really small school in San Diego. I got an associate’s, but most of my experience I gained working in the industry as opposed to school.
T: What were some of the major lessons you learned from your years of freelance and working for huge brands like Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie?
D: Every place I worked I made sure to be very observant, and see how each companies ran differently. Taking note of what worked and what didn’t work while I was cultivating my design skills during that time. I was always fascinated with the business side of things. It was really cool to have worked for and with so many different companies, and really understand how companies work. What you can and can’t do.
T: Do you or anyone in your family have any degree in business, or was it something you picked up along the way?
D: My dad has dabbled with starting businesses. He’s very business savvy, so I’ve learned a lot about business from him.
T: What fears went along with stepping away from freelance work and going into Dazey?
D: I quit a job to start Dazey. I was just scared in general. I’ve always been a very careful person. My whole life I would make sure I was safe and comfortable. I worked really hard to make it as a graphic designer. I had jobs that I was very safe and comfortable in. The thought of leaving that and taking that risk was terrifying. Losing everything I worked so hard to built.
T: How did you conquer those fears, and build up the courage to start Dazey?
D: I listened to tons of podcasts about starting business, and I followed the journey of female entrepreneurs who I admired. I just got to a point where I said, “Okay, if they could do it, why couldn’t I do it?” The company I quit right before Dazey was a start up, and I got to see how you build a business. I realized it’s not as scary as I thought it was, and that I could actually do this myself instead of for someone else.
T: Are there any books you recommend that helped you?
D: I love "Girl Boss" by Sofia Amoruso. She came from nothing and built this giant empire. It blew my mind. I really like the book I’m reading now, “All Marketers Tell Stories.” Seth Godin says that instead of just selling a product, you need to have a whole story behind your brand. I decided to really focus on the story I was telling through my designs.
T: What do you want your story to be? What do you want your shirts to mean to people?
D: I design my shirts for girls like me. Girls who are interested in art, and have really big dreams and passions. I like to think that girls who buy Dazey have all that in common with me and with each other. A girl posted a picture yesterday that she randomly met a girl who was also wearing a Dazey shirt, and they became instantly friends. That’s just crazy.
T: A lot of your work is inspired by 70s posters and vintage graphic tees. What is it about the 70s you love so much? Do you feel like there’s a lot of parallels between the 70s and today when it comes to art, pop culture, and current events?
D: I’m fascinated by the 70s. The art was so cool. Fashion was just crazy and awesome. There was just such a big movement for peace. I feel like people really cared. They were protesting the things they believe in, and I think that speaks so much to what’s going on today. People standing up for their rights, the big feminist march. I think it’s so perfect for what Dazey represents.
T: Where did this activism in your life come from? Why is it important for you to speak out?
D: I’ve always been an outspoken person. I can’t hold it in. I’m the kind of person that has to tell it like it is and be very open and honest. I guess I’ve just always been that way. I have this medium of t-shirts. I can put words on it that people wear, and spread a message. It just seems like a no brainer.
T: Social media is an important tool for Dazey LA. How does social media play a role in making a company today?
D: What I love about social media is it gives the little guys a chance that they didn’t have before. Back in the day you needed money for expensive ads, or no one would be able to find you. Now you can share, and grow your audience organically, for free, easily through social media. You can do it in a very authentic real way, and connect with your customers. Interact with them, ask their opinions on things. As a one girl show I can promote what I’m doing, and afford to do it.
T: What’s the story behind the name “Dazey”?
D: I just liked the way it sounded. My sister and I were going back and forth on names, and that one stuck. We felt it evoked a feeling of laid back LA, the 70s. It just kind of worked. It was short and easy. It’s kind of timeless.
T: How long does each t-shirt design take you?
D: It depends. I used to take half a day to do a design. Now I can do it in an hour. I’ve been doing it so long, I’ve become very quick.
T: Any advice to young aspiring artists, business people? Especially women?
D: Yes! Don’t limit yourself. I did that when I was younger. I never thought I was going to have a career, especially in art. I was just going through the motions, hoping it would happen. Every step of the way I was empowered. I realized, “Hey I can do this! I can have these big goals.” I was moving up this ladder, and I started to believe in myself.
T: Any last words? This will go down in history...
D: What inspires Dazey are the Dazey ladies. It’s not just a t-shirt company. It’s a community of women. I’m inspired by my Dazey ladies.
Dani just launched The Dazey Zine, which includes design tutorials, fashion/business tips, photos, and more. You can keep up with Dani (@danidazey) and Dazey LA (@dazey_la) on Instagram. For more on Dazey LA, visit http://www.dazeyla.com.

Taylor Blackwell Interviews Gil Vazquez, President of the Keith Haring Foundation
6/28/23…
I got to interview Gil Vazquez, the president of The Keith Haring Foundation. I’m biased but I think it’s a special conversation about a visionary artist and human who lived such a full life. Hope you will listen, and also see Keith’s museum show… tickets to the Broad.
Keith Haring is my favorite artist and hero, so this was a dream come true!

8-17-22, august life update… movies, music videos, matcha.
Hi friends,
It’s been quite a while since I’ve written a blog entry. With my birthday around the corner, it’s nice getting this opportunity to recap my recent history.
I just wrapped a feature film called ”As We Know It”, which I filmed in Los Angeles. It’s a zombie apocalypse movie directed by Josh Monkarsh… it stars Pam Grier, Chris Parnell, Oliver Cooper, Mike Castle, Danny Mondello, and yours truly! You can read more about it here…
"Jackie Brown" star Pam Grier, "30 Rock" actor Chris Parnell and "Project X" star Oliver Cooper are set to headline "As We Know It."
Filming was a lot of fun; I don’t think I can say much more than that right now. I look forward to sharing updates on this project when I can.
Prior to ”As We Know It”, I filmed a few episodes of the upcoming Showtime series ”American Gigolo”, starring and produced by Jon Bernthal. The series premieres September 9th. I am so excited to watch!
In music news… I released the music video for my track ”So Sweetly”, directed by me! It stars myself and Anthony Keyvan. Anthony is a wonderful actor, I feel lucky to have him in this. You can watch it here:
https://www.youtube.com/embed/QfgJAtV13sQ?feature=oembedReleased 7/22/22
We shot the video a while back, so I’m happy to finally have it released. Special thanks to my DP/friend Brent Mata at NEER Motion who really brought the video to life. We previously collaborated for a music video I shot with my band the tenth… you can watch that video here:
When I released my album ”In Memory of Haroldine” last September, (nearly a year ago!), it was not properly mastered. While I love the tracks as is, I decided to have the songs mastered and I will be slowly re-releasing them.
I’m really thrilled with the way they sound, it takes the songs to a whole new level.
It’s very possible I might have another music video coming out in the near future, wink wink.
Final updates… I released Volume 2 of my comic Earth Sign Love. Available here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/561753910/
I cut together my first animation reel; these days you can often find me drinking matcha and animating…
And lastly, I cut my hair! It feels good in this summer L.A. heat. Here’s a recent picture of me at Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood event.
Stay tuned for upcoming concert announcements and other exciting updates…
Thanks for supporting me,
tily

8-9-21, update from taylor: thank you Trevor Moore
Yesterday I found out that Trevor Moore passed away. Trevor created Walk The Prank for DisneyXD, which I was lucky enough to film an episode of a few years back.
Trevor was at my callback for the show. He looked so familiar but I couldn’t place it while I was in the room. I was a huge fan of his from The Whitest Kids U Know, but he was older now and had a beard – plus it was so out of context. The instant I stepped out the door, it occurred to me who I had just auditioned for. I remember nearly gasping out loud. It’s probably better that it worked out that way; I would have been pretty nervous had I known going in I was about to perform for one of my comedy heroes! I had made him laugh a lot at the callback – to have made someone laugh who had made me laugh so much in my life was a tremendous feeling. I prayed that I’d get the part just to tell him how much he meant to me.
My wish came true, and I found myself on set with him the next week. Pretty surreal. I think on the second day I worked up the courage to say something to him. He was so kind about it, and told me he thought I was super funny! I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t to tell you the truth.
I always hoped our paths would cross again, but I’m so grateful they did that one time. So, thanks Trevor for the laughs, for the kindness, and giving me a shot.
7-26-21, update from taylor - first single out!
Hi friends! Lots of exciting announcements –
My first single/music video “B.S. Poetry” is out NOW! It was released Friday, July 22nd. Seeing everyone’s reactions to the song and video has been so fun. I hosted a little screening of the video for some close friends this weekend, and had the best time watching everyone watch the video. A special experience I won’t soon forget!
Here’s the video in case you missed it:
I did an interview with Tumblr to celebrate the release of the song. They asked me about the song, how I got into music, and more. You can watch that here:

Hi friends! My first single/music video will be released this month. I am incredibly excited. The song is called “B.S. Poetry.” I co-directed the video with one of my best friends, C.C. 2-21-21, update from taylor
2-21-21...
Hello! Welcome to my website. Thanks for stopping by. Today is Sunday, and I’m taking a break from my Riverdale binge-watching to do a little check in on here.
First, I want to say thank you to everyone who has purchased my oracle deck, and those of you that have supported my art/Etsy in general. There are now coloring pages from the deck on the art tab page of my site. I’d love to see what you come up with. You can email me photos of your designs at [email protected] – I hope to hear from you! The deck is now being sold in a couple of stores, which is a great honor. I’ll be sharing more about this soon. I will be getting back to weekly TikTok oracle card readings and Instagram live readings in the near future as well.
It looks like I’ll be finishing the recording of my solo album at the end of this month. If not finishing, I’ll at least be getting the bulk of it done. I’m really excited and loving how everything is sounding thus far. We’ve tracked drums, bass, and some guitar. Pretty soon I’ll be getting in the vocal booth, and laying down some accordion as well. The album is being produced by my friend Davey Warsop from the band Sharp/Shock. Davey and I met a few years ago when my band ”the tenth” did a live session with Hurley, (which you can watch on the music tab.) I’m really enjoying working with him again. As soon as the recording is done, I’ll be sinking my teeth into some music videos.
I have a few other creative projects and tricks up my sleeve, which I’ll share in the near future.
Sending everyone lots of love. Stay safe, where your masks, and I’ll see you soon!
Taylor
Hello! The blog post connected my website TaylorBlackwell.net is constantly being HACKED! So I am going to share old blog posts here. With love, Taylor xx
“Humans are obsessed with pets. If I give Liza this slobbering lump of fur, she will become so distracted taking care of the dog, I won’t have to take care of her.”
We're finally starting to see some kindness from Harry to people other than Asta. While he was forced initially into taking care of Liza, he did care about her at the end. And while Harry needed to fill in the troubling gap in Sheriff Mike's memory, Harry chose to make it a happy memory and put in something that the sheriff had been missing from his father.
As showrunner Chris Sheridan had said at the beginning of this season, we're going to see Harry learn to have empathy to others than just Asta.
P.S. I also appreciated that we learned why Sheriff Mike spoils Cletus so much.
