Mother’s Day-Honor Mom with Flowers!

Mother’s Day is the one day of the year that most people set time aside to honor their mother, grandmother, or wives with something out of the ordinary to make them feel extraordinary and honored. But it wasn’t until 1873 that Mother’s Day was accepted in the United States, thanks to Julia Ward Howe who created the Battle Hymn of the Republic. She wanted to create a special day to honor peace and motherhood. Although many cities loved the idea, when Howe quit financing the celebrations, the holiday lost momentum and fizzled out.

In 1905 Anna Jarvis picked up the idea once again as a way to honor her mother. After asking her pastor to give a sermon in her mother’s memory, another pastor in Philadelphia also honored Mrs. Jarvis and all mothers in a special service the same day. Anna began writing letters to her Congressman to have a special day for Mothers. Finally in 1910, the governor of West Virginia proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. The bill passed in Congress in 1914, and President Woodrow Wilson signed the bill and Mother’s Day has been observed ever since.

What does Mom want? Flowers of Course!

What do you get to honor mom and all she does on this special day? White carnations used to be added to gravesites and given to moms in church services on Mother’s Day in the turn of the 20th century. That tradition seems to be the reason why both restaurants and florists across the country do more sales on this day than any other day of the year. Mother’s Day is a 14 billion-dollar business!

Where to start? What colors does mom like? Do you have a budget that you want to spend? Most arrangements go from $45 to $105 and can be delivered to a work address or home. Roses are nice, but what about adding several colors of roses together to create excitement and a lasting impression? If mom likes purple utilize a variety of lilac roses, fuchsias and lavender carnations to warm her heart and bring a smile to her face? A dozen red roses, yellow roses, pink roses, or a mix of all together is a sure way to tell mom that you were thinking of her and want the best! What woman doesn’t like roses?

Fresh earthy looks of daisies, wildflowers, and sunflowers are a contemporary arrangement that seem to smile back at you like a rainbow. Unfussy, soft, and natural these arrangements are great for the Pinterest moms.

Maybe you need some fresh ideas to get you thinking of what kind of arrangement would be suitable. Florists offer pre-made arrangement to offer a quick selection. Some examples are in this link specific to Mother’s Day. If you don’t see something that dazzles you, ask to do a custom arrangement. Be sure to ask about cut-off times as some flowers may require extra time to get or they may sell out.

Remember, whatever you do, do it soon! Mother’s Day is the busiest day for florists and you want to be able to get the right look for your mom!

Easter Lilies, Baskets, and More

Easter can fall on one of 35 different days between late March and late April every year dependent on the cycle of the moon-but always on a Sunday. During Lent that begins on Ash Wednesday and follows for 40 days not including Sundays, Christians prepare for Easter with prayer, repentance, and mourning. On Easter Sunday a celebration of Spring, newness, purity, and joy surrounds the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is represented through an abundance of glorious flowers.

Easter Lilies

Flowers always symbolize emotions. Easter is a joyful time of new beginnings and re-birth. After the dryness of winter, the flowers bloom and the air is lighter with more sun prevalent. The Easter Lily is associated with the resurrection of Christ and is mentioned throughout the bible. Some say that the white lily sprang up in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus wept after his betrayal by Judas. Another legend is that white lilies appeared after Eve left the Garden of Eden. The Easter lily symbolizes the purity of Jesus when he died on the cross.

Daffodil, Tulips, Iris, and Passion Flowers

Although the Easter Lily is the most common flower to give at Easter many other Spring blooms are popular. The daffodil is often connected with Easter to symbolize re-birth, a new season, and hope. Baskets of daffodils are used in centerpieces and baskets during the holiday to bring good fortune. Never use just one-bad luck will follow!

A tulip is very elegant, light, and beautiful flower used in red, purple, yellow, orange, and pink to add color to an Easter basket arrangement. The bulbs can then be re-planted to have for next Spring. Tulips not only enhance an arrangement, but signify everlasting love.

The circle of petals in the passion flower are representative of the crown of thorns that Jesus wore and the 10 disciples that did not deny Christ. The flower usually lasts for 3 days-the same amount of days that Jesus spent in the tomb. 

What about the iris? The iris has been a link from earth to heaven since Ancient Greek times. Purple irises were planted over the graves of women to summon the Goddess to lead the journey. It has now come to mean faith, hope, and wisdom.

Putting all these flowers together with a few brightly colored eggs, with some grass, or greenery brings significance to any Easter arrangement. It’s all about the fun, using pastel colors, bows, butterflies, bunnies, and FLOWERS!

Baskets were originally created to supply a nest for the Easter bunny to leave eggs for the children in the early morning hours of Easter. Sending the right basket or arrangement for Easter is a way of sharing the joy of the holiday. Enjoy the season with various springtime flowers that are traditionally used to celebrate the sacred Easter Holiday. Easter floral arrangements are a very thoughtful, eco-friendly, personal, meaningful, and beautiful way to decorate your home that symbolizes renewal and happiness. Removing the Clutter! Cleaning Made Easy!

It is so easy to collect things you don’t need in your home. Less clutter-easier to clean also! There is probably excess mail, books, magazines, clothing, and even furniture you don’t and haven’t used in a period of time. Even food in your pantry that you won’t use! So let’s start by going room to room to declutter by categorizing:

 That’s all there is to it! The main areas to look for clutter will be the kitchen, closets, and bedrooms.

Food and Kitchen Area

Check out your pantry. Canned food has sell dates or “best if used by” dates on it. Add 2 years to the date unless it infant formula. Perishable food must be cooked or frozen by date stamped on product. When in doubt check the USDA recommendations. Canned food can be given to local pantries or the local food bank. Food banks allocate their food to the pantries throughout the communities. If it is damaged and you wouldn’t eat it-throw it out! Needed items are soups, ramen noodles, canned meat products-(tuna, Chef Boyardee, Vienna sausage), juices, diapers, macaroni/cheese, and peanut butter.

By removing older food from your refrigerator you will begin to see what you really need to eat nutritionally and safely. Any crystallized product should be thrown away immediately. Eggs are only good 3-5 weeks. When in doubt-throw it out!

What is on your kitchen counter? Appliances, canisters, food, mail, and what else? What do you really need on there? How often do you use the mixer or blender? If you use it more than 2 times a week, then keep it on the counter. Otherwise store it away to give you room and peace of mind. Same thing for canisters of flour, sugar, coffee, and other items. If you don’t use them-move them. Mail should be sorted daily into bills, announcements, and other family member mail. Old events, announcements, and coupons should be thrown away if not useful. Keep refrigerator decluttered of old flyers too. Keep the current pictures and children artwork up and frame the older items. Get a colored bin for each member of household. As you declutter take their personal items and put in appropriate bin for pick up that day.

Bedrooms and Closets

Can you easily open the closet doors? If not, start with the items on the floor. Get a large plastic bag for the trash, and 2 storage bins to use for Charity or Garage Sale (if you intend to have one!). If you haven’t used it and don’t intend to use it-move to a bin. Look at jackets that haven’t been worn, sports equipment, boxes, and toys. Shoes can be divided into boots or winter shoes, sandals or summer shoes, dressy, and casual. Use rubber baskets or totes for each shoe category in the closet. Keep the current season shoes in view, and others in baskets. Scarves, belts, and other accessories can be grouped together in separate baskets.

Dresser drawers should be gone through every 6 months. Are there dated sweaters that have not been worn in over a year in your closet or drawer? What about bathing suits that are worn out or you know don’t fit? We tend to hang on to clothing that bring back memories but we don’t wear. Get out the sorting bins for Charity, Trash, or Garage Sale. Holey socks-thrown them out! Suddenly there is more room everywhere!

Consider giving away or boxing old books and magazines also. Dust mites thrive in books and paper goods. De-cluttering will help to de-stress and relax your whole cleaning experience. Need extra help-Call We Sell for You!

Why use holly, poinsettias, and evergreen?

Christmas centerpieces make great gifts, and bring a touch of nature into your home or office. The fresh scent can be just what you need to get you into the Holiday spirit!

Often the focal point of any celebration that includes a dining table or banquet, centerpieces make a visual and sensory impact on the entire food display that will long be remembered. Just as wreaths are used on the outside doors, evergreens are often used in the arrangement to bring the aroma of nature and life inside to complement a meal.

Evergreens, Holly, and Mistletoe

Evergreens can endure harsh winters when most other plants cannot. Christians in the 16th Century bought the trees inside to offer hope of the Spring to come. They also represent eternal life that Christians believe is present in the birth of Jesus Christ. By displaying the evergreens on their doors and inside their homes they would honor the strength of Jesus to endure prosecution and keep evil spirits and illness from invading the home. The foliage was then expanded onto the food table to keep hope of prosperity, health, and everlasting hope.

Elaborate food tables were a mainstay of the Roman times to reflect great wealth. Their feast were decorated with evergreens to honor the God of Agriculture during the season of solstice. High towers of fruit and marzipan were displayed during feasts to show their rank in society. This type of centerpiece was an important public display on tables throughout the 18th Century for any formal gathering. Marzipan often resembled animals and people in the community.

As time when on additional items were incorporated into centerpieces-candelabras, themed objects, and of course flowers.

Thousands of years of history is represented in evergreens. Holly, ivy, and mistletoe are used in many Christmas centerpieces. Why? They too, are evergreens and represent eternal life, or enduring hardship. The berries in Christmas holly represents the blood of Jesus and the prickly leaves often are used to represent the crown of thorns. Mistletoe was thought to ward off poison and an antidote to embrace fertility if ingested. The Victorians used mistletoe over doorways to allow socially acceptable kissing-but a berry must be plugged for every kiss. When the berries were gone, the kissing stopped!

What about the Poinsettia?

There is a legend that a young girl from Mexico had no gift for the Christ child on Christmas Eve. She stopped to pick up weeds along the roadside and made them into a bouquet. She presented the bouquet as she walked into the village chapel. Suddenly she remembered the words of her brother, “even the most humble gift if given in love will be acceptable in His eyes”. Suddenly the bouquet transformed into bright red flowers, or the poinsettia. The Christmas legend still carries on!

Today Christmas centerpieces still use the evergreens, holly, ivy, and many other objects from history, including the poinsettia, to enhance any Holiday meal with memorable moments. Lastly in January of 2015, their newest location was built showcasing a private room for gatherings, parties, or meetings, a separate bar area and an outdoor patio. Three locations with 3 unique characteristics-but all the same made to order Italian meals and award winning brick oven New York style pizza and calzones!

The difference between Russo’s New York Pizzeria and other restaurants is its genuine commitment to using fresh, quality products while continuing to offer affordable prices in a casual dining experience. Trying something new each visit could be an exhausting endeavor! Italian Style French Toast, Uova and Salsiccia (poached eggs with prosciutto and Italian sausage over baby spinach) and the Smoked Salmon Omelet are some of my favorites! Guillermo and Debra are actively involved in the Greater Conroe Chamber, the Spring/Klein Chamber, and The Woodlands Chamber of Commerce. Mother’s Day is Everyday!

I am a mom, a grandmother, a sister, a wife, and hopefully a friend to all of them at some point. My relationships are based on honesty, integrity, and work ethic, rather than just “being a friend”. 

As a mom, I will ALWAYS unequivocally be there for any of my kids-whether I agree or disagree with them. But we don’t need a DAY to feel good about what we do. It is hot-wired into our being. Moms have intuition, x-ray vision, empathy, compassion, and a sense of community.

Think Mother Goose. She is the epitome of all nursery rhymes, a leader, a Pied Piper of all the characters whether real or fairy tale. She doesn’t take time out to explore what she really wants or needs from the “Children”. She just does. 

Mother Teresa is not about honoring, but about doing. She believes in “Spreading love wherever you go. No one comes to you without feeling happier. Some people are relations, but all of them are my people”.

Mothers are inclusive to community and are the change makers. Who do you ask when you want to make things happen? A mom-a doer.

The name “Mom” brings emotional thoughts of comfort, happiness, a sense of belonging, smiles, tears, and nostalgia. But what is a mom really-besides the person that gave birth to you? A mom is someone who shelters, offers guidance, has infinite patience, and puts the needs of others above hers with action.

So Mothers’ Day is more than on day a year. Mom will always be there in action doing the dirty work without saying a word every day forever.

Why do you have your business? What excites you to get up everyday and go forward? Are you excited when your day begins or do you look like the girl in the image?

I know for me, I have always enjoyed helping others in a big way-volunteering for events, sharing information about their business through networking, and just socializing with others so that I really get to know who they are. So, just by organic growth-I got into Public Relations.

Is you business growing in the right direction that keeps you motivated? Reflect on what I'm saying. If you were to write down your top things you enjoy doing, is your business one of them? Is it something that you are skilled at doing? Are you focused on your target audience? Have you identified who your target audience is and are you marketing to just that audience? It's that simple!

If you are truly excited and passionate about your business, others will be too! Your passion will differentiate you from the pack of competitors in a hearbeat. To be successful you need to fall in love with your work. Keep the focus and make it simple.
