Matthew Brandt, Rainbow Lake, 2013

Matthew Brandt spoke to me on a personal level in his way of thinking, using material, and mode of experimentation. He relates the subject of what he photographed to the photographic medium. He thinks based on the reactions of the material, and the product that is formed. Matthew takes a photograph of a lake, and uses the physical water of the lake to transform the photograph back in his studio. He uses old darkroom technology such as developing with chemicals, known as a wet process, and lets the water from the lake sit with the chemicals to develop the photographs into a homogeneous form.

Ryan, hope you are doing well and staying safe in this wild time.

Your photos as a whole are captivating, and each assignment stands out on its own. Your environmental portraits are stunning, as they are shot in thought provoking environments. Your silhouette photos are nice, however I would suggest with the hand silhouette to bring down the brightness of the clouds if you can. The silhouette on the right with the window is nice, however I don't think I am a huge fan of the color having such a green cast. Your self portraits are fun and playful, and I feel like im being put in a game of hide and seek with the second two. fantastic job on getting those angles! overall really nice work! keep making thoughtful images the way you have been.
