The Cheeky Childlike Wonder of Sir Cheeseball Wafflefanny is a slice of life story using the pre-existing characters in Captain Underpants and turning them into OCs to make a story out of! I chose this concept because I wanted to see if I could use traits of these characters and make a whole whacked out and dark story with it. It is one of my biggest fixations, so naturally I chose them!
Throughout the story, you follow Harold (or sometimes he’s called Harvey) throughout his day-to-day life as a mentally unwell/undiagnosed young adult. Him and “Sad Worm” go around and experience the harsh realities of life after abuse. The story touches up on all things I can physically cram in there. This includes self harm, sexual/physical/emotional abuse, toxic relationships, moving on, grief, racism, sexism, substance abuse, sexuality, gender identity, and basically all things us as humans get itchy about when thinking too hard. This was an experience for me to not only heal from myself, but also to grow my knowledge about the world around me. All experiences he faces are based on actual events that have either happened to me or someone else, sometimes tweaked to be more specific to his story.
There are a LOT of characters I brought in to create this story, 99% of them from the book series/show. Off the top of my head.. I include Melvin, George, Billy, Lisa, Benny, Benny’s two siblings, Heidi, Kipper, Grace (Harold’s mom), Harold’s dad, George’s family, Melvin’s parents, Erica, and a LOT more… so it’s a LOT to keep track of! I try to stay consistent on all things about the characters, but be prepared for slip-ups. I do this story like a roleplaying with myself, I have big chunks in mind but the stuff between is completely made up on the spot.
I guarantee something within this story will trigger you, so please read with care. Just because it is a story based on a kid’s book does NOT mean this is a story for kids. I fear a child could not only not comprehend what the story truly means, but also have a fear they will be influenced that the horrible things happening in the story are cool somehow. Children think on a more surface level, it isn’t their fault! So please, protect yourself and wait up to read this til you’re old enough. It contains a lot of graphic content you should not see.
The setup… I regret. It is 4 panels per page, and as of writing this I have 300+ pages completed and am going back and fixing. This story is LONG, so I thought it being 4 panels would save me some storage… I was not thinking about how SMALL the text would be. When I post it, I will crop them individually so it’s easier. It’s a pain in the ass, but it’s my own fault. After a certain point, it switches to two panels per page, this makes it way easier to read and it will stay like that. So in advance… get your reading glasses on.
This is the first comic I ever fully completed, the first version was over 600 pages long and fully finished BUT I restarted because it was very VERY not what I wanted it to be. I read it back and hated it, I rushed so bad and it was incomprehensible. I want this to be more linear and less mumbo jumbo, that’s why this version is taking me so long.
The art… in random pieces I add or change things, the art will get randomly better bc… I improved in my art. You will 100% be able to tell when an old panel pops up, so forgive me for the inconsistency! I want this story to be told any way I can do it, and unfortunately with it taking THIS LONG it is gonna look DRASTICALLY different from time to time… example of a new and older panel below. (Ignore the text, it will most likely be changed)
I am trying to go back and fixing up the old goofy panels a bit, but there is only so much I can do LOL 😂
The text… the font changes I think 3 different times, I’m aware of that being supa annoying!! I’m sorry in advance, this is me learning how to make comics on my own. My process shows with every new page I draw! I also color code the characters, I’ll do a chart for it when I’m closer to finishing it.
If I think of something, I’ll write more down here. I’m very excited to show you guys this comic!! I am gonna finish all of act 1 and post it, then I’ll take another big ass break to finish the story in act 2+3! Forgive me if this takes another year to get to posting, I want it to be my first fully finished project (honestly, maybe my ONLY finished project I’ll ever do) because I have so many ideas! I hope you love my story or hate it but learn something!
