“I’ve learned plenty, and it’s not my life’s damn pursuit.” Sirius frowns. Of course there are morons inside Ravenclaw - he’s met morons in every house, including his own. Though ask him, and there are a lot less morons in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff than there are in any other house. 

“I’m not hungry.” 

He sounds like a child. He knows. 

“Right now I am small and useless.” 

He shakes his head. “And you’re still learning, clearly,” he says dryly. “It’s not brussel sprouts, Sirius, I’m sure you’ll survive eating it.” He shakes his head again and sighs. “You’re not useless. Small, yes, I mean, you’re a bit short compared to me, but listen. There’s always going to be moments that make you feel useless, especially in this job. You started taking classes here for a reason, do you remember that? Have you become any less capable of doing that than you were before?”

“I’m not a Ravenclaw.” Sirius scowls, nose scrunched up. “I don’t know what I’m doing here, that’s what I’m trying to tell you.” 

“Neither am I, but that doesn’t mean I can’t try and learn things,” he points out. “There are nerds outside of Ravenclaw. There are morons in Ravenclaw too.” He shrugs, and shakes his head. “You’re being a bit of a dick and refusing to eat is what you’re doing right now, but big picture? Trying to make yourself something more than you were before. You’re trying to learn. You’re trying to help. And right now, you’re getting frustrated because things keep making you feel like you’re small or you’re useless.”

SIrius looked at him, jaw squared. mouth a turned down line. “What if I don’t want to know the secret?” He looked away, just to be ornery. “To help people.” 

“If you’re not in the business of knowledge seeking, then you’re never going to learn anything,” he tells him. “Exactly, to help people. And if you think that having the entire textbook of healing arts memorized is the only way to help people, then what are you doing here?"

“I should be a healer already.” Sirius fiddled with his thumbnail. “Then i could help. I could actually do something.” 

“Sirius, I have a secret for you. A very important one.” He turns to face him. “But first, what’s a healer? The bare definition of a healer, what’s a healer?”

“And that agreement included Fleamont, and we can all see how that’s going.” 

He shakes his head, and sits down next to Sirius. “We’re doing absolutely everything that we can for the Potters,” he promises. “I know it’s hard. I need you to trust me on that, though.”

“That is a distinct possibility.”

“Congratulations, Lavinia, I’m so happy for you!” He hugs her tightly, laughing. “So you’re Mrs. Ollivander now, right? Blimey.”

“You’re not my Dad.” 

He raises his eyebrows. “I thought Eddie and I agreed to both be your dads,” he says. “I get you on weekends and every other holiday. It’s Saturday.”

Andy smiles up at him. “It always has been,” she says. “And it always will be. There is nothing about my old life that I would rather have than this.” She gives a soft giggle. “Of course not,” she says. “Not ever.” She smiles softly. “I’m glad she knows it. I never did when I was her age.”

He can’t help but smile teasingly. “Not even an annoying house elf running around after you?” he says. “Because that’d be kinda’ nice, if you ask me. I’d love to not have to do the dishes ever again.” He kisses the end of her nose. “We’ve done our best to make sure she gets everything we wish we had when we were kids,” he says. “And I think we’ve done a pretty good job of it.”

"I know you’re not, but you still need to eat.” He holds out a lunchbox. “C’mon.”

“What? That – it’s nothing. Nothing.”

“That is not nothing! You eloped, didn’t you?”

“Then you must be a shit father to a lot of people out there. No one has the time to be everyone’s dad and be good at it.” She rubs her neck, sighs. “Yeah. It seemed like the last place that wasn’t ruined by all this, you know? Of course, that’s not entirely true, any muggleborn will say that, but … still.” She smiles a little. “I can imagine. It’s brilliant, though, that you still … defied all odds. Flipped off the stuffy purebloods and all, at the same time.”

He huffs softly, shaking his head with amusement. “I like to think I do my best with it,” he says. “It was safer there for muggleborns than it was out here in the real world,” he says. “That’s the best we could ask for, I guess, and now it just feels... I don’t know. Tainted, I guess.” He smiles back at her and shrugs. “Oh, it pissed them off beyond belief. Andy’s aunt has this mental little family tree tapestry on the wall, with all their relatives and stuff on it. They blasted her face off of it after they found out we’d eloped.”

Andy smiles softly. “Losing you would have been worse than anything else,” she says. “Anything I had to give up…it’s worth it. It’s always going to be worth it.” Leaving behind Narcissa was the only thing that had ever caused her a moment of doubt, and knowing that both her sisters hated her was harder than anything else, even after all this time. But there had never been an option, not really, of not being with Ted. She smiles. “Oh, as if I’m the only one that’s stubborn,” she says, laughing. “I suppose we can settle this by saying she’s the perfect combination of the two of us.”

He shakes his head. “You’ll never have to lose me,” he promises. “I want it to be worth it. It should always be worth it, without a doubt.” And he always does his best to make sure that it is. He chuckles. “Of course you are; I’m never stubborn.” He nods. “That sounds fair,” he agrees. “And true. She’s perfect, our girl. And she knows it.”

It’s not my choice, it’s hers. I’ll support her no matter what. That doesn’t mean I have to be thrilled about it, though.

He frowns. “That seems a little bit wrong, though, doesn’t it?” he says. “I know you should support her, and that’s right, but I don’t think it’s right that you don’t like him.”

“You’re not my real dad! You can’t tell me what to do!,” she exclaims dramatically, before smiling at him. “Yeah, I get it. I think it’s … I can’t speak for everyone, of course, but for me too, it’s such a special place? I grew up there. To have something like that happen on an occasion that’s supposed to be just happy … it’s terrible.” She shakes her head. “I know I’ve said this before,” she begins, a smile growing on her face. “But there should be a book written about you two. That’s … that’s beautiful, honestly. Must be amazing to be that head over heels with someone.”

He shakes his head. “I’m everyone’s dad,” he says, though he’s teasing. He nods. “It makes sense. Hogwarts meant a lot to a lot of people, this... it’s frightening.” He smiles at her, unable to help himself. “We got lucky. And it is, yeah. It was terrifying at the time, considering Andy’s family was still a  part of her life when we were younger, but that didn’t make it any less worth fighting for. She’s incredible. And sometimes you just know that’s the right path for you. Even if it seems insane.”

“I can’t believe you thought I would say no,” Andy murmurs, shaking her head. Sometimes she still thinks that Ted doesn’t fully grasp what he did fo rher. What he rescued her from. Yes, she had wealth and affluence, and there had been the promise of never having to work a day in her life, of being coddled and provided for with the best of the best. But never had she foreseen love for herself, not following the path that her parents set for her. Ted had offered her, for the first time, a future where she would be loved and valued for herself, not for her name or her family fortune. She gives a little laugh. “She has your sweetness,” she says. “And curiosity and creativity.” 

He shakes his head. “It was a lot to ask of you,” he says. To him, it’s her sisters-- well, sister, he knows that losing Bellatrix was hardly a sore spot, but Narcissa-- and all the money and fanciful things that Andromeda gave up. Most of which, he knows, don’t matter to her, but most of her life was not spent planning for the life she’d ended up living. He smiles at her. “I know you think she’s just a little version of me,” he says. “But she’s got just as much of you in her as she does me. She has your strength, and your determination, and your passion for life. And your stubbornness,” he adds with another smile.

Andy smiles softly, closing her eyes at Ted’s touch. “You and Tonks are easily the best things that have ever happened to me,” she murmurs, opening her eyes again to look up at him. “Everything I had to give up – and I wouldn’t even call it that – pales in comparison. There’s nothing about that life that’s worth not having this.” She smiles softly again. “I always tell people she’s more like you than me.” A light, brief laugh leaves her lips. “She does have a way of surprising me.”

He smiles. He wishes they could  stay here, just in this moment, one built from comfort and love and trust, even in the middle of all this bad. The thing that keeps them afloat is each other, as always, providing safety and support where there was none. “Seems weird to think that we stood here seven years ago and I thought you’d say no,” he says, glancing back towards the lake. “I spent the entire winter break shopping for rings, and then here we were. And that was it; I knew I’d never get another chance, it was then or never. And it was then.” He chuckles softly, and shakes his head. “She’s not,” he protests. “She’s just got my eyes. Well, when she chooses to.”
