Boy band member grows up and makes a rock record” is a catchy elevator pitch for Harry Styles, but such a description would ignore the most recent One Direction albums (which were largely classic-rock homages), and miss the nuances of the leap that Styles has made in his first solo effort. With his self-titled debut, Harry has opted to forego radio play and make a big, brash guitar album that draws upon arena rock as much as hushed folk and hair metal; there’s a lot of ground covered here, and none of it feels inauthentic. Credit Jeff Bhasker for fleshing out the production on songs like “Carolina” and “Ever Since New York,” but this is Harry’s show, and his commitment to conjuring the spirit of ‘70s rock never comes across as overreaching. Styles was always going to be a star post-1D, but with Harry Styles, he justifies his headliner status.
