pov you just got home from work. you haven't slept well in a few days and all you want is to have a drink and relax. you walk into your home. there's one extra child there that wasn't there when you left. you ask your husband where she came from. not only has he spontaneously adopted her, she's also the main person of interest in an active federal felony investigation. when you try to suggest turning her in, your husband says he will kill himself. and there's a fucking wild ferret that definitely hasn't been vaccinated hanging out in your living room. you have no idea which one of your husband's insane daughters brought it home. you are olruggio wha, and this is a normal tuesday
People using Qifrey for those "a single mom who works two jobs" edits is so funny to me when Olly is canonically the single mom who works two jobs and Qif is the stay at home wife who homeschools their kids
can i ask what witch hat atelier is about? i keep seeing stuff about it recently despite never having heard of it before, so i'm curious now
Hi !
You certainly can !
Witch hat Atelier (Tongari boushi no atelier), is a fantasy manga by Kamome Shirahama. The reason why it’s everywhere of late, is because it got adapted into an anime that was several years in the making and, so far, this adaptation is stunningly made.
The story is still ongoing in both mediums.
What is it about, then?
The story is set in a fantasy world where magic can be found in a variety of shapes and forms (self-cleaning ponds, flying carriages, illuminated pavement...), and everyone can use those. But only the witches (gender neutral here) can make the magic stuff. The common people can’t, for you have to be born with magic to make magic stuff. (EDIT : the phrase I was looking for without finding it was "cast a spell". Only the witches can cast spells, but commoners can use objects on which the spell has already been cast).
We follow Coco, a young girl who’s always dreamed of being a witch and who’s fascinated by magic. One day, at her mom’s shop, she meets Qifrey, who turns out to be one of the witches she admires so much. When Qiefrey ask for a private place to perform some magic, the girl can’t help but take a peek. What she sees, thought she doesn’t know it, is the witches’ most important secret, one they are very intent on keeping.
This leads her to try something on her own with an old book and the wand a shady witch once sold her when she was a child. Doing this, she unknowingly unleashes some very powerful magic that has some horrible consequences.
She has no choice now but to become Qiefrey’s student at his atelier and learn all about this world she wasn't even supposed to enter.
I am aware it might not sound particularly unique but bear with me why I explain why it’s so well-loved.
(Rest under the cut because I was way too enthusiastic)
Reasons why I love this story so much (probably similar to a lot of people’s own reasons)
- The art.
The manga is known for his very recognizable, very detailed art and gorgeous compositions. Also, author Kamome Shirama is fond of fancy ornaments and some panneling choices are absolutely stunning.
Just. Look at that art!
The coloured one is the very first page of the manga, the second is how pages look on average, and then sometimes Shirahama wips out stuff like the other ones (clic on it to make them bigger!)
I could read that manga even if the story was shitty, just for the art.
As for the anime, so far (only two episodes out), the team has been doing a wonderful work calling back to this art style as much as possible within the constraints of their medium and the animation itself is very good.
- The way the story is told and the themes
What at first may look like a happy, optimistic story about a bunch of girls learning magic quickly turns out to be much, much deeper and quite a deal darker in places as it explores the consequences of its premises. Don’t worry, as far as I got in the manga, it still retains hope and doesn’t turn completely bleak but boy does it get forgotten sometimes. Oh how I hope to not be proven wrong withe the next volume.
The witches have a secret, and the story takes great pains both to tell (and show) exactly why this secret and the affiliated rules came to be AND all the ways this doesn’t work, can be twisted or even be harmful. And Coco is perfect for that, both because she’s an outsider who has to learn along with us and because she’s a child and children ask questions about stuff most adults don’t even see anymore. We get to discover the witches’ own little society and slowly get to see all the holes in the pretty facade, everything that doesn’t make sense or feel so wrong, everything that could be so much better. And the way it impacts the characters, both witches and sometimes non witches.
Keeping that kind of secret comes at a cost and Shirahama shows us exactly which.
- The diversity in characters.
We are shown queer characters, disabled characters, people of color (thought I don’t feel legitimate to judge on how well those are represented), people in all their shapes and forms. And I am so glad about it.
- The magic system (and the worldbuilding more generally)
Shirahama loves her world and it shows. She has paid attention to details, created some stunning original landscapes, specifics plants and animals…. She built an entire society, and it makes sense. She also actually touched on how the presence of magic could or would impact the common people.
And the magic system is how I love them best. A simple set of basic rules, easily learned, that allow for very creative and diverse uses of magic if one has the right knowledge. Magic is a work of art.
- Kids being kids.
The kids look and act like their age, they feel genuine, like real life kids that age would. And the girls are treated as the children and students they are by the adult witches in the atelier ( thought it’s not true for all masters with their apprentices and again, props to Shirahama for showing that also).
I'll stop here or I will go on for hours.
If you choose to give it a try (whether manga or anime) feel free to tell me what you thought about it !
Made an anime friendly version of this meme. Happy release day! :)
[Image ID: A "breaking down the media in to reactions by section" meme about Witch Hat Atelier that has been edited. Past the initial responses of "This is the most beautiful manga I have ever seen" and "Oh, no! Girls, watch out!" the rest of the meme has been colored over and labeled "Don't worry about it". One can only partially see "Jesus fucking christ what" at the very bottom. Overlaying text reads "Happy Witch Hat Atelier anime release. Everyone watch Witch Hat Atelier".
