Summary: The camp counselors try (and fail) to explain the appeal of a hall pass to Shane and Ilya.

“I would pick Shane,” Rozanov announced proudly to the group.

“That’s not how it works, Rozanov,” JJ said, his accent thicker after his third beer. “You have to pick someone other than your husband.”

“Other than Shane?” Rozanov said slowly.

“Yeah,” Campbell explained. “Like if you could sleep with someone other than Shane with no consequences.”

“Oh, okay,” Rozanov said, straightening his back and considering Shane for a moment. “Then I pick evil twin of Shane who tricks me into thinking he is my angel and then has his evil way with me.”

“No, Ilya,” Hayes said. “That’s not—”

Pike put his hand up. “Actually, I like that. Can I change my answer to Evil Jackie?”

“What?” Carter said. “No! No. Let’s move on. Shane?”

the other thing ill say is it could have been very interesting for reid to address the rapid and inexplicable changes to shane’s personality at the end of the long game (immediately overcoming his disordered eating, not wanting to watch the stanley cup finals, passively forgiving everyone offscreen, being excited to play in ottawa without complications) as like……. shane is experiencing a severe dissociative episode.

shane — who at this point has spent the entire book being told by literally everyone that he needs to be less mopey and anxious and to support ilya’s life more — fully compartmentalises everything and pushes all of it down. he’s never been happier, truly. yes he’d love to host the centaurs at his new house without warning. he’d love to do a photoshoot. he’d love to post a video on instagram. he’d love to be the butt of the joke. look how much fun he’s having. this is great. he just needs to be less worried about everything and it’ll all work out. ilya will take care of it. he just needs to go to the back of the line. yes, he wants another slice of chocolate cake please and thank you

ideally i think. ilya and his parents would perhaps slowly catch on that the bizarre stepford wife act is in fact a coping mechanism and shane hollander the person is in fact grieving in total freefall. itd be nice for other characters to objectively look at the situation and think. man i can’t believe we were mad at shane for getting threatened by the commissioner of the nhl or being outed twice over or being accused of cheating and losing both his professional career and his reputation. but in the meantime shane is doing just awesome thanks for asking.

Shane at the end of The Long Game is so totally fine! Like, totally and completely fine! Everything ended up for the best! Can't you see how happy he is?

He's so agreeable and relaxed now, doesn't even worry about his diet! It must be because he's less stressed by not hiding and being able to play under his husband as Captain.

Yeah, sure, he's lost his privacy, his team, his reputation, his legacy, a big chunk of his income, his leadership position and his home in Montreal. Okay, so all the things he was worried about actually came true to some degree (for him), but he was such a downer about it all - ruins the vibe.

So now he has no choice but to pretend to be okay with this outcome, to go along with the desires of the people around him and pretend to like it because if he loses them as well?

Then what's left?

Forgot what it wss like being in an “active” fandom because every week there’s new Heated Rivalry drama and most of it is ridiculous nothing-burgers that some fans want the cast/crew tried for and it bums me out.

I’m so sorry I’ve been MIA this year! I had a whole host of health issues crop up and it was hard to engage in anything beyond a surface level.

Anyway, I’ve been trying to get back into writing by penning some short Heated Rivalry fics. I haven’t been able to write regularly, so every sentence feels very clunky to me. If you’re interested in giving my work a once over, please let me know! I very much need another set of eyes.
