Safari Bandai, Senegal, before my camera broke. We took a car shuttle to the town of Sali. Sali is a beautiful resort town on the Ocean with a amazing beaches. I then hired a driver to take me to the Safari. These are the photos I got before my camera broke my heart and crashed on me. :-(

Lake Retba is about an hour from Dakar. We took a cab to get there. As we approached the lake we were disappointed that it didn't look pink. It looks like a regular lake. But, as you walk around the lake the pinker it gets. The lake is pink due to its salt content. The pink colour is caused by the Dunaliella salina bacteria, which is attracted by the lake’s salt content. The bacteria produces a red pigment in order to absorb the sunlight. That is what gives the lake its pink colour. Because of its salt content there is not a lot of life in the lake. When you walk around the lake you will salt workers extracting salt from the lake. All around the lake there piles of collected salt. This salt is extracted by locals from the bottom of the lake using their hands, then placed into baskets it is transported to the shore where it is used mainly to preserve fish. Also around the lake are many vendors, restaurants, and even a resort. The vendors can be VERY aggressive so be mindful when talking to them. You will have them chasing you around the lake yelling at you. Also, when you take a photo they considered that a gift and expect you to buy something. They will yell at you to take a picture and then demand money or to buy something. Other than than it was a perfect day at the lake.

Goree Island, Senegal, Western Africa

Goree Island is a short ferry ride away from the city of Dakar. It is a small (900 m) car free island with many wonderful restaurants, artists, vendors, and beaches. As of 2013 there were approximately 1700 people living on the island. Today Goree Island is a peaceful retreat from the hustle of Dakar. But, the island's past is anything but peaceful. During the 1700's it was used as a place to hold slaves until they were transported to Europe and the West. You can still visit the house of slaves on the island.
