Final Solution

Problem Statement:

By 2030, 12.5% percentage of Indian population will be 60 years or older and by 2050, one fifth of the country will be aged. So, we need to start planning for the demographic transistions especially in terms of health, income as well as social and psycological aspects faced by them. A more worrying fact is that 10% of them are living alone and the number has been raising over the past decades.

On the other hand, working parents find it hard to take care of their kids who are less than 5 years old. They have to trust them to a daycare where the ratio of staff to child is very low but with high cost. Other difficulties would include lack of qualified teachers and lack of nutricious food. Also, the children are not getting enough attention to grow and explore. There is also raising concerns of security and trust.

Proposed System:

We propose a interaction between these two extreme demographic groups which would complement and add value to each other. In this system, the daycare would be run by qualified elderly people. This would help increase the status of the elderly by improving their income security, health and work force participation. All the environment would be more safe with high number of people watching over them. The kids will also have a better monitoring and will be safe. This helps building a trusted and reliable environment between elderly, kids and parents.

Features:

More attention to each kids because of high care taker to kid ratio

Giving responsibility and a purpose to the elderly to engage them

Building a trusted and safe community for children to grow

Increase the status and perception of elderly in the society by providing economic stability

Children learning from the experiences of the elderly people provides a stablity of cultural continuation

Why will this work?

On a fundamental level elderly and children share some common characteristics which would make it easy for them to get connected with each other. Also, the elderly would be more patient towards the children and have atmost attention as they don’t have much other responsibilities. The cost spent for the daycare will be reduced for the parents. This creates a win-win situation for all stakeholders involved in this system.

Ending up in a solution

We started brainstroming at 12.00 and started mindmaping the sectors and  issues in the Indian context. We also analysed the factors and challenges which determine the users trust on a service or system.

After brainstroming through various sectors, we chose 4 areas to dive deep into viz. transport, health, networking and money management.

We shortlisted 3 ideas, which we thought are relevant in current socio-cultural scenario in india. First one, a platform to share experiences based on a location and searching for like minded people with same interest around. Another a system to bring elderly people to the the mainstream by giving them the responsibilty of taking care of younger generation and incentivising their effort - this will create a demographic transition by adding value to all groups of people. Last one is a  micro-journalism platform to get unbiased local news. We explored the potential and setbacks of  all three ideas and decided to go with elderly run daycare concept.

We beilve, this concept have the ability to make huge impact in various demograhics of the society. Making elderly responsible for the children daycare will improve their lifes along with improvement of quality of daycare experience and service children get. Our thought comes from the fact that elder people are sidelined and percieved as weak and backward. Idea of putting their experience and time to good use will bring them back to work force participation will improve thier status of life and morale. This is also help to change youngesters perception towards them. We worked on the details of the service and thought of many scenarios both positive and negative. 

With our research, we could clearly see the how this ideas could be helpful in building a trust-driven community of daycare center with high caretaker to childer ratio. We completed our storyboard which depicts a metophorical scenario where a elderly man helps an kid who fell down and the bond they create. Now, we now ready with a clear idea of the service we are proposing and a story we need to show the importance of it.

We are creating a senario where characters from these different demographics interact.

We tried to come up a storyboard which depicts the concept proposed metophorically.

Challenges in making users trust and responsible

Gaining users confidence

Confidence can be gained by providing a consistent and reliable experience throughout the journey. Valuing users feedback and providing assistance is also a key component in improving their confidence in the system.

Educating users

Involving and making user aware of the back-end research and design process behind helps them understand and connect with the system. Providing an insight of how the product and the system works will make users more aware of the scenario rather than just focusing on the product.

Understanding user needs

Proper user-research is the key to understand the needs of user. Alongside conducting  simple surveys, we also  need to truly understand how users use the system to have a insight of their needs.

Make users aware and responsible for their actions

Users should be made aware of the actions before taking them and also acknowledging them with rewards for their actions or keeping up with the tasks. 

Make them feel belong to a community that they can trust

Users should feel that they are a part of a group or community making them familiar with the environment.

Socio-economic problems in India

In a growth-driven country like India, there are numerous issues that are plaguing across sectors. Here is a list of issues that can be addressed by using a user-centered system.

Our next task is to refine this list to identify sectors that are more influential in the indian context.
