Please, in all this muddle of life, continue to be a bright and constant star. Just a few things remain as beacons: poetry, and you, and solitude.

Auguste Leroux (French, 1871-1954)
Ballerina
Ellery had studied at a small ballet school in Surrey before heading to White Lodge just before her tenth birthday. She was a beautiful dancer, but a terribly flawed student. One had to do both, well, at the Royal Ballet School and Ellery knew that.
Which is why her parents sent her to Hamburg to a finishing school instead of letting her try out for the main company.
Ellery never forgave them for that.
If it had been Paris, or Berlin, perhaps even Sao Paolo, she would have deigned to send the odd Christmas card. But Hamburg - no.
And yet Hamburg was the making of her. She discovered a love of brutalist industrial architecture - and fell madly in love with an entirely different career.
Nobody knew she still had tickets to Sadlers Wells though and, once a year, wore a veil in the back in the stalls, secretly relieved she had taken a path away from anorexia, messed-up feet and a horror of tulle.
