I have so many prayers for my baby boy. I pray he will grow up with a love for adventure and a desire to truly soak in the world. I pray that he will be confident in himself and always know who he is and never forget his infinite worth—as a man, as a human being. I pray that he will never forget how much his mamas love him. This world consists of both light and darkness. The darkness often scares me, especially as I cradle him in my arms…but I know he is such a brave soul. Braver than I have ever been, and I pray that he never lets anyone or anything change that. He is my sunshine—my perfect little light. ☀️

In two days we get the diagnosis about our baby's eyes. To say I am dreading this appointment is an understatement. So far we know he has Nystagmus but now we need to know what is causing it. I was told that 97% of children with Nystagmus have it because they also have Ocular Albinism which causes the wobbly eyes. OA (ocular albinism) is also genetic. My grandma is has nystagmus but has never been tested for OA. My uncle has nystagmus and ocular albinism. That's my biggest fear is that he has OA. People with OA are either legally blind or have very low vision, and are also extremely sensitive to light resulting in migraines. Unlike regular Albinism that effects the pigment of the whole body OA only effects pigment in the eyes. As a mother I can't help but worry and be scared for the results. As hard as I am praying for the best my mind drifts off to the worst. I am a very positive person but I can't help but be a little sad. Sad for my baby. Sad because I can't fix his eyes for him. I can't imagine people teasing him because of his wobbly eyes in the future, it breaks my heart. If he has OA he may never drive. Never play sports. Never do a lot of things that kids do. I do know that regardless of the outcome I will always be there to support him. I will teach him that he can do anything anyone else can do. He will be self sufficient. He will be confident. He will know how amazing he is regardless of any possible disability.

What Can I See

This is a video I found on YouTube made by Annette Ferguson. This video is an insight on how albinism affects peoples’ vision. It has helped me to better understand how albinism might affect my own daughters’ sight. Please keep in mind that not everyone with albinism is affected in the same way. This video was made to help people understand how albinism affects the vision of those who have it.

How does albinism affect the eyes.

People with albinism will always have vision problems that glasses or corrective lenses cannot fix. Glasses or contacts can help and make things more clear, but they cannot fix the problem like they would for someone without albinism. Of course,  the degree of vision impairment is different for each person depending on what type of albinism they have. Vision problems in albinism are a result from abnormal development of the retina and the overlapping patterns of nerve connections between the eye and the brain. Because of these problems with the eyes, doctors are able to diagnose albinism.

There are many difficulties when it comes to vision in people with albinism. Nystagmus is almost present in everyone who have albinism. Nystagmus is the regular horizontal back and forth movement of the eye.

Strabismus is another, is the crossing of one or both eyes.

Photophobia: is high sensitivity to bright lights like the sun and glare. You will see that people who have albinism squint while being outside if they aren’t wearing sunglasses or even indoors when there are bright lights on. The iris has little to no pigmentation. What a lot of us don’t know is that the colored part of our eyes, the iris, screens out the stray light that comes into the eye. Thats why our eyes have color to them. In a normal person light would only enter through the pupil. However in albinism the light also passes through the iris because of the lack of pigmentation.

Astigmatism also occurs.

Some also experience difficulty with depth perception. Where they won’t be able to distinguish between steps, for example if the steps were the same color they wouldn’t know if it was flat or not.

People with albinism also have difficulty seeing fine detail. A lot of people mistake this as them not being able to see a certain object at all. For example, if a cheerio fell on the floor as small as it is, it is a small detail. Some people might think that a person with albinism wouldn’t be able to see it, but thats not right. What they can’t see is the fine surface depressions and texture on the cheerio.
