the way her face seems to fall, the way she wrings her hands nervously and how her voice turns timid. he understands that feeling and suddenly, he’s far too empathetic. there’s a pain in his chest and he shakily nods, looking back at the crowd. chewing on his bottom lip, he decides to ask.
' what if i went with you? '
perhaps working as a team would make things easier. fingers twitch, he jerks his head over his shoulder to look back at the crowd and the crime scene. then he exhales through his nose. will looks back at her.
' i have a job i need to do, but i can't do it with that many people watching me. but i get it, i understand. just… just follow me. ‘
there’s no reason for him to introduce himself, he’d more than likely never see this girl again in his life. but there’s no harm in asking for help. so he takes off towards the crowd of teenagers, his head raised as he keeps his wits about him.

Not having much of a chance to respond, she trotted a few feet behind the investigator, glancing around at the sea of familiar faces. Each one twisted with worry and confusion, but occasionally a grin. A few kids were laughing, happy to get a day off, regardless of the cost. If she had anywhere else to be, Theresa would probably share their sentiment. As they passed through, it occurred to her that following this guy just because he told her to might not have been a fantastic idea, even if he was some sort of agent. His overall demeanor was incredibly focused, and not in the least bit threatening. Better near him than where the killer could snatch her up, she guessed. Plus firsthand experience would be pretty fun to blog about when she got home.
and he’s snapped out of his thoughts by the voice of a girl, a young girl no older than fourteen, he thinks. it takes a moment for her question to properly sink in, and soon his mouth is twitching and forming words of its own accord. he should tell her to go home, he should tell her there’s nothing to see here. but doesn’t she have a right to know what happens at her own school?
' one of your teachers—… was supposedly stabbed to death. '
he casts a glance over his shoulder. the murder scene is barely visible because of the children that crowd around it and the policemen attempting to get them to leave. coughing into his fists, sniffing once, he mutters to her,
' i wonder if you could pass on the word to the other students to leave. '
because apparently the word from authorities still isn’t working, but maybe the word from someone they knew would help.

Momentarily stunned, Theresa found herself taking the news...rather well. She supposed, deep down, that she always expected something horrible to happen one day. It's not as if she held some cynical view of the world, rather it seemed more likely that not everyone could be saved. Plus, it's not like she was close with whoever got killed, if they were a teacher. When the man speaks again, her breath is instantly caught in her throat. Death, she can handle. Dead people were easy to talk to; speaking with her classmates would be a different story. Delivering such heavy news would be a nearly impossible feat: surely they'd stop her and ask questions pertaining to the event, anyone would be curious if they hadn't spoken to a police officer (or whatever) firsthand. Wringing her hands, Theresa swallowed, glancing back over at the crowd. They really were just taking their sweet time getting out of there. There was no way she could face that many people at once. "I can't."

GO FOWLHAM OR GO HOME
the blare of alarms drowns out the incessant chatter of students as they file one by one from the school, heads bowed as they whisper on their way to the buses that would take them home early. what’s the occasion, you might ask? nothing special — someone just happened to get stabbed multiple times in the school parking lot. a teacher, coming in for work. the killer bolted before anyone could get a good look at them.
will stares down at the body, aware of the teenagers watching from behind the yellow police tape. some are walking home, some are taking the bus, some have their parents waiting outside for them. they daw- dle just to watch the scene, curious, undoubtedly.
before he can analyze the scene, he feels like he’s going to break under the pressure of all those stares. he can’t do it like this. swallowing dryly, his throat par- ched, will breaks away from the crime scene and ducks beneath the tape. children protest as he pushes through them, but none of his colleagues seem to question him. when he manages to get some fresh air, he breathes a sigh of relief.

Sleepy feet fell heavily against cold pavement as the young teen trotted up to her school. Over-sleeping for the third day this week thanks to a tower of ill-fated assignments left Theresa exhausted: the kind of tired that never seems to be cured, no matter how much sleep had been regained. As she turned the corner round a stalling school bus, her eyes fell on the shuffling crowd heading out of the school. This...couldn't be happening. Someone was hurt--really hurt. This sort of thing just didn't happen in Norrisville, not with the Ninja around to protect everyone...but even the town hero was nowhere among the crowd. Completely unsure of just where to go, Theresa spotted a man standing away from the crowd, walking away from a group of police. Re-adjusting the strap of her satchel, she quickly trotted the short ways over and attempted to grab his attention. "Wh...what's going on?"

Oh no! Did he offend this girl somehow? That’s the last thing he wanted to do. He quickly speed walked , don’t want to run - might trip and hurt himself , catching up to her ” I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable. Please accept my apology in the form of a muffin basket. ” Cue the sudden appearance of a brightly decorated basket.
☾✿☽
"I--wait, what?" Should she have been worried about that? Probably. Showing her palms, she quickly shook her head while attempting to keep up the sheepish smile. "I can't accept this, please. I don't even know you, really, ah--" Did she have any excuse to get her out of this? Frantically searching for a reason to leave, Theresa left a wide silence between them. Good job.

(( I'm sorry that you feel this way. I'm selective for a reason, but chances are if you talk to me about it off-anon then I'd at least be willing to give it a shot. However, these sort of self-deprecating messages are very unlikely to get a positive response out of me. ))

’ getting you out of the city will be easy enough — but will you be able to get back to your home once you’re out? ‘
he’s truly concerned when he asks that. he doesn’t like leaving the city, so he will most likely have her go off on her own once they got to the outskirts. ears prick forward in curiosity, and he cants his head to one side.
☾✿☽
”Yeah. I think so." She massages her hands nervously, surveying the surrounding concrete towers. Dull orange city lights flicker to life and wash over them, the light of the sun all but extinguished now. A small wave of shame surged from within her, anxious to return and possibly never look back to this place. "It's Norrisville, I don't know how long it'll take to get back...it's not too far away, is it?"
(( I haven't gone to my ask page before now--my computer screen dimensions are kind of gigantic, can everyone else access the 'send' button? I would really appreciate it if you could just go to my ask box and let me know if you see everything alright. ))
