Ozark folklore tells of many monsters and spirits that lurk in the shadowy hills, hollers, and houses across the mountains. Join us for an introduction to the folklore record collected by Vance Randolph, Mary Parler, and others, as well as stories still told today. We will also look at the many ways healers and folk magicians have appeased and at times banished these mysterious forces as well as suggestions for keeping the spirits of your own home and land happy.

Tarot Tip:

Always listen to the cards that jump from your deck. They often have a message to convey that you need to hear right away. If you can not understand the card’s message, ask the rest of your deck. They can work together to help you understand what message needs to be heard.

I started learning tarot last year after I bought my cards. I got a book to help me learn the ‘traditional’ meanings, and I looked thru the guidebook, because I need some kind of foundation when I learn any new skill. I know most advice is like ‘don’t read the books!!’ but personally I feel like the standard meanings are there for a reason. That matters to me. It didn’t feel right for me to just make up my own right away.

But now, it’s been almost a year and I’m still having trouble balancing using my cheat sheet/the deck’s guidebook and my own intuition. It makes my readings clunky and I’m really self conscious doing readings for people in person. (It doesn’t help that 99% of my practice has been by myself or on the internet/Tumblr). 

I’m trying to find some sort of method, or maybe a tarot challenge, to help me form my own intuitive meaning of my deck. Any suggestions, or ideas based on how you did things? I’m open to anything!

One thing I highly recommend is doing a daily draw and writing down your thoughts and feelings connected to the imagery of each card. What does the pictures remind you of? What sort of feelings do you get when looking at these cards? Don't touch the book while doing this! After you've written everything you can think of, put it away and go about the rest of your day. At the end of the day pull out the book and write what connected and what didn't to your perception of the card and how it appeared that the day went. THEN when you've finished this process, you can pull out a guidebook and see what connected and what didn't. Was there something you missed that felt true to the card that day? Add that to your entry. After doing this for a while, you begin to build up a wealth of experience that becomes knowledge at your disposal.

Another thing you can do is get an app that quizzes you on the meanings/key words of the cards. It helps you to have a quick answer ready in your mind as you are looking at the cards.
