Rose was at the Burrow, grabbing a snack from the kitchen. Everyone else seemed to be occupied, either playing Quidditch or conversing amongst themselves. Grabbing a pastry, Rose noticed that Scorpius Malfoy, Al’s best friend, had just entered the kitchen too. He nodded at her, while Rose gave him a quick grin.
Scorpius had recently changed in Rose’s eyes. He had gone from an annoying prat to someone she found kind and enjoyable to be around. He could make her laugh, and above all else she felt safe with him. So needless to say, Rose now had somewhat of a crush on Scorpius. She noticed his piercing grey eyes, his agility while he played Quidditch, and how he went out of his way to help others. He was so damn mesmerizing.
“Rose, we need to talk,” Scorpius said. “Now look, it’s obvious how you feel about me, don’t even deny it. But there is no way I could ever have feelings for you. From your bushy hair to your need to know everything, you just annoy me, Weasley. So just stay away.”
Rose was crushed and words could not come out. She felt hopeless as tears ran down her face.
Moments later, Rose woke up in a sweat. It had been a bad dream. That’s all. Needing to forget about what she had just witnessed, Rose hopped out of her bed and headed downstairs. Much like in her dream, everyone was staying over at the Burrow, as it would be Christmas in a few days. Knowing food would solve her issue, Rose decided to grab a glass of milk and a cookie. Rose heard footsteps as she sat down at the table.
“Not surprised to find you down here, Rose,” Scorpius said, reaching to grab a piece of Rose’s cookie. “What happened to you, couldn’t sleep?”
“Ihadanightmare,” Rose muttered, half hoping Scorpius wouldn’t hear her. But of course he did, and he grabbed the chair next to her and sat down.
“I always hate those. Do you want to talk about it?”
Rose shook her head back and forth, knowing talking about it would only make it worse. During this, she could not suppress a yawn that indicated how tired she really was.
“You should go back to bed,” Scorpius suggested.
“I don’t think I’ll be able to,” Rose whispered, slightly embarrassed. Scorpius looked into Rose’s chocolate brown eyes, trying to come up with a solution.
“I’ll tell you what. Why don’t you lie down on the couch, and I’ll stay until you fall asleep.” Rose scoffed.
“No thanks, Malfoy. I’m not five.”
“Come on! You might as well try.” Rose realized that Scorpius was really trying to be helpful and that was part of why she liked him in the first place. He always wanted to make sure that people felt safe and secure, no matter what it took.
“Okay,” Rose acquiesced, laying down on the couch. “But if I’m not asleep in 15 minutes, I’m going back upstairs!”
“Fine by me,” Scorpius replied, grabbing Rose’s hand and stroking it with his thumb. Shivers went down Rose’s spine. She closed her eyes, hoping if this was a dream that she’d never wake up.
“Scorpius?” Rose stirred a few minutes later while half asleep.
“Yes?” he whispered, moving his other hand into her fiery curls.
“Please, don’t leave.” It was a request Scorpius took to heart.
“I promise, Rose. I’ll never leave.”
