All this talk about The Prank also makes me think about memories and the pensive again. I can’t remember who I had this discussion with earlier (shout if it was you) but how reliable are the memories we see in pensives?
If I’m telling someone about a memory, it will definitely be skewed. I will remember the situation differently from other people who were there. It could be a small thing or a big thing, but it won’t be exactly the same. Because I come into it with my own feelings/memories/relationships or whatever.
But if I show them that memory? When Harry sees other people’s memories he’s watching as an outsider, he brings his own preconceptions into it. But is a memory seen through a pensive always neutral? Is it possible that it’s a little skewed because of who saved the memory?
