teddy’s hands smoothing over her skin, the heady scent of his cologne was making her head spin in the best way. she never wanted to let him go, always wanted to be the reason he smiled. he was so beautiful that she couldn’t take her eyes off him. “good. it’s only fair.” all too soon, teddy was sliding off of her and off the bed entirely. his sudden nervousness made mercer sit up, edge a little closer towards the comfort of being near him “what is it, teddy? is everything okay?”
after getting out of bed, teddy made his way over to the jacket of the suit he was wearing when he walked in. he’d been carrying the little black box with him everyday, trying to work up the nerve. teddy grabbed the box, not bothering to conceal it, and crawled back in bed beside her. “no, everything’s perfect. you’re perfect.” teddy assured her, opening up the box. “and i want things to stay perfect, and that’s only ever gonna be possible with you.” theodore didn’t think a big speech was necessary. he loved her, she loved him. it was only time they made it official. “mercer valentine, will you marry me?”

the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe was grace’s favourite story, and her copy of the book was a testament to love that a person could hold in their hands, run their fingers over her timeline. it’s pages were dogeared, faded orange sticky notes attached to sentences or phrases that had meant something to grace when she was eleven, and again when she was sixteen. she dropped the book in front of teddy now, drawn in eyebrows pinched together in a confused, slightly offended frown. “ i think i want to have kids. ” she said, bluntly, without missing a beat.
teddy laid back on the couch in his apartment, aimlessly scrolling through channels as he waited for grace to arrive. she’d texted him, explaining dire circumstances, letting him know that she was coming over immediately. this wasn’t behavior he wasn’t used to. at her sudden entrance and declaration, teddy raised his brows. “with me?” that was the only logical conclusion he could draw at the time.
“you say that as if you’re fifty,” andrew scoffed. “and first of all, you can’t call him that. only i can. but — i don’t know, maybe. i guess? i don’t know how much more of us he can take.”
“c’mon, the little guy loves me. i’ve been his main supplier of alcohol since he was fifteen. you wanna just give me his number? or maybe, you text him for me? whatever you’re more comfortable with. i wouldn’t wanna offend you in any way.”
ftmercer:
no words had been exchanged between them about this sudden shift until now. but they didn’t have to — they had always been on the same wavelength. “hopefully you, soon.” once those words hit mercer’s ears, an incredulous laugh escaped her lips as she clapped a hand over her mouth. she sat up, hand still pressed to flushed cheeks and his shirt pooled around her small body. “you’re driving me crazy, rutherford. that’s the only explanation. i don’t know what you’re doing to me.”
at mercer’s sudden declaration, teddy grinned in surprise. “jesus christ.” he mumbled under his breath, a fit of laughter soon following. she was incredible. teddy crawled in at the end of the bed, his strong arms pinning her down and their faces only inches apart. “you’re driving me crazy too, baby.” he whispered. “but there’s something i’ve gotta do first.” theodore spoke, getting out of bed. if mercer could be brave, so could he.
andrew raised his eyebrows in surprise, “does it look like i would know of anybody wanting to be an intern for your company?”
“c’mon, you’re down with the kids.” teddy spoke. “what about your little nerd friend? jack?”
“do you know of any college age students maybe going into business? my company’s looking for some interns, but all of the applications are falling flat. you’d be a life saver if you could just point me in the right direction.” teddy inquired. “even someone with working arms to fetch coffee. i’m desperate at this point.”
ever since teddy had gotten home from his trip, things had been different. he always made her bolder, always made her feel beautiful, in a way no one else could. but now it was like they were dancing around something bigger than their friendship, something that they had been for a long time. the pictures were something she had been debating sending, which was so uncharacteristic that part of her wondered if love could make a person go crazy . they had barely kissed and here she was posing half naked in his shirts. her heartbeat was thrumming in her chest as she lounged on his sheets, waiting for him to come home to her.
teddy wasn’t sure exactly when things had changed between he and mercer, but he was certainly thankful that the change occurred. he had to be to have dropped a pretty penny on a ring for her. he’d had it for weeks now. the only thing he’d been lacking was the courage to ask her. “what’s gotten into you?” teddy smiled as he walked into his bedroom, theirs lately, mercer all laid out for him in just one of his shirts.

it was nine minutes to midnight and, just after 0.56 seconds, it was dark, like someone had switched off all the stars to preserve energy in the clinic. he’s here x, aristotle’s mami had texted with absolutely no context, with a follow up primer amor x. aristotle’s hands hadn’t stilled since. the curtain was open and she sat with a crown hairclip under the ward lights, back turned, clearing up the last of her anesthetic and cotton swabs. the last time ari had seen his mother sat with teddy rutherford, there had been no need for latex gloves or stitches. “ mami, ” his voice made her small shoulders startle, and that’s how it was to be a marez, sometimes. shaken, but self-contained. a hand reached forward to pet teddy’s cheek, a simple touch, and there was a whispered word that aristotle couldn’t – or didn’t want to – hear.
“ querido, ” kind eyes were on him as she stood, and delia marez’s voice was a bottomless lake of knowing. “ will you sit with him ? ” aristotle had never been able to refuse his mami, even more so when her words were not a request. he leaned down to kiss her cheek as she passed, handing her a bag with his excuse for being here and willing the hummingbird battering his chest to shut the fuck up. aristotle looked to the only other person left in the room, catching his own worry a second too late. shit, shit, shit. “ so, what does the other guy look like ? ”
since losing his first fight months before, teddy had slowly been moving back up the ranks all while trying to manage his day to day life. because he was now working his way back up to the top, he had to fight more often, leading to his body refusing to heal between fights. it lead to a peak on a saturday night at 2 am when he made his way into the emergency clinic of the hospital. it wasn’t necessarily an emergency, as he wasn’t dying, but he couldn’t stitch himself up and he didn’t know anyone else that could besides delia. he felt comfort in her gentle hands, but he knew that he didn’t deserve to. he and her son were no more. “thank you.” teddy breathed as soon as delia finished bandaging him up. as much as teddy hated to admit it, he was beaten up pretty badly, and he was thankful she was around to help him.
aristotle entered the room and theodore had to avert his eyes. he couldn’t act like he didn’t know him like he had that morning in the coffee shop. it took far too much. suddenly the ache in his chest was much more painful than his scrapes and bruises would ever be, and he knew that delia couldn’t fix that pain with a bandaid and a sweet kiss. teddy didn’t answer aristotle’s question at first. all of his walls were down, broken with the wrecking ball that was aristotle himself. teddy was completely without defenses and it terrified him. “you can ask him when he wakes up.” ted jokes, keeping a brave face. he didn’t want to go home but he knew he couldn’t stay here.
adrianna’s eyes avert from the adjacent boy to the counter as she watches skilled and speedy hands pull together her iced coffee in a matter of minutes. she ushers a soft ‘ thank you ’ to the woman who hands her the beverage, and when she realizes he’s introducing himself, she panics. or, tries hard not to, rather. “ hi, ” she speaks, bringing the straw to her lips, “ my name’s adrianna. or adri, i guess. or anna, but it’s usually adri. ”
teddy had a bit of extra time to kill, and found himself to be a rather outgoing person, so he decided to strike up a conversation with the girl he’d ushered out of the line. “hello.” he said, taking a sip from the hot coffee. “i’m teddy. it’s nice to meet you, adri.” he smiled. “are you from around here?”
the look settling over teddy’s face was one she had not been expecting. hennessey associated him with the lips curling into a smirk right before he leaned in to kiss her or the triumphant furrow of his brow whenever he landed a punch. but this show of concern wasn’t something she knew how to react to. “and who did you think i was fighting, teddy?”
when she sprung the question on him, ted looked at her in confusion. “i thought you were fighting a girl. what guy in their right mind would fight you, hennessey? jesus, you’re tiny. it’s wrong!” as a professional fighter, he knew where the boundary line was. “why did you fight a dude? was it a money thing?”
it wasn’t a secret that james had little money. he was a struggling film maker, of course he wasn’t making bank. he probably wouldn’t for years. even at the coffee shop, before being paid for a job he did last week, he was having a hard time scraping up the cash for his tea. what an embarrassing moment. he kept mumbling apologies to the barista and digging in his pockets. thankfully, teddy stepped in; his hero. he watched with shaken hands as teddy paid, the barista looking at him like he’s her saving grace, and so did james. he’d of course repay him in some fashion, but right now, he was just glad to be rescued from this humiliating experience. “ thank you. “ he said with a small smile.
teddy hadn’t even been paying attention when he offered the money up front. he’d been so distracted, he hadn’t noticed his james standing in front of him. “you’re welcome.” teddy whispered, his hand on the small of james’ back as he ordered his own coffee. once paying for that as well, they both made their way back to a booth. “what are you working on?” he asked, gesturing with a nod of his head at james’ camera sitting on the table in front of them.
