Unique Meets Unique
It's a warm summer night in Ocean Beach. The energy of the evening matches the creative frequency that floats throughout the community. On any given night in Ocean Beach a person can be wowed by a variety of things, whether it be a drum circle, a craft artist, or, as in the case of this article, a talented musician. On this particular night in Ocean Beach, I decided to go to Winston's Beach Club. A club in Ocean Beach that is known for its nightly musical variety, and open mic nights showcasing artists trying to build their local, as well as national buzz. When I came into the club I was intrigued by the look of a particular artist that approached the stage on the night of an artist showcase. He had a pair of skinny framed glasses, skinny jeans, cowboy boots, and a bandana tied like an ascot around his neck with an electric guitar draped over his shoulder. This artists name is Jahnathan Nerette, a singer/songwriter from Miami, Florida, who moved to San Diego in 2018. This 23 year old musician started his creative career at the age of 14, but began mastering music at the age of 12. With the ability to play multiple instruments (guitar, bass, drums, and piano), Jahnathan left Miami to further his passion in southern California. "The move changed my whole life. Changed my perspective totally. I felt like I was able to be myself more musically which inspired me." It's tough to fathom Jahnathan needs anymore inspiration based upon his raw talent, but seeing him perform suggests otherwise. "My biggest influences are Ray Charles, Sammy Davis Jr., Chad Calloway, Louis Armstrong, and Bob Marley." Old soul in a young body some would say, but the complete performance is what leaves audiences in awe. Besides the incredible vocals and instrumentation, Nerette provides a signature dance ensemble that is "James Brown esque." Nerette has released two EP's this year. "Cool Breeze," which was released in July, and his self titled EP "Jahnathan Nerette," which was released in May. Both projects are available on all major music handles; Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and Google Play. The speed at which Jahnathan works is undeniably praiseworthy but this creative wastes no time when it comes to his passion. Recently Jahnathan went back home to Miami to work on his full length album which he looks to release in early 2020. After which he has a tour planned which reaches as far as Kenya. Jahnathan will be back in San Diego in October to perform and do promotion for his upcoming album.
