So I was always a bit curious in that first scene in the Hinterlands at the Crossroads. Solas just kinda wanders off.

Where you going??

Solas wanders off to help someone hurt during the conflict. This is at the very start of the game and shows his personal motivations before he really gets to know anyone in the Inquisition. The best part is it’s completely in his character the way it’s presented. He’s a figure in the background. Without flycam/paying strict attention we don’t see what he’s up to and can assume he’s just doing a Solas elfy thing or whatever. Or not even notice. Turns out, he’s doing what he always does: caring about people.

This makes me think about something…

In the Crestwood scene, our Lavellan has a choice of answer following Solas rejection, which goes like :

“Tell me you don’t care”

“I can’t do that”

I have the feeling this sentence was not only meant for his Lavellan, who he loves more than he could possibly understand. It is a foundamental trait of his personnality : he cannot NOT care.

Which is probably why he put himself (and the world) in such a big mess… A pretty mix of too-much-caring with terribly-bad-decisions with very-much-important-people.

Okay, while it’s good that you realize Solas is fundamentally a person who cares too much, I really think it’s also important that we discuss that he’s not necessarily the best at verbally expressing this.

Solas has difficulties with communication that get oft overlooked because he’s eloquent and excellent at explaining his ideas.

But that doesn’t mean he’s emotionally adept. Feeling strong doesn’t mean that he is capable of controlling, recognizing, or reconciling all of his emotions for what they are.

You know, something nobody ever wants to talk about is how many lives Anders saved.

He provided free healthcare to everyone who came to him, including the poorest of the poor, the ones who would’ve died because they couldn’t afford to go anywhere else. I have no doubt he provided free gynecological care, including no questions asked abortions, to any woman who showed up at his door and we see firsthand that he provided treatment for sexually transmitted infections for anyone.

That, my friends, is magic serving man. That is a mage working for the common good, for those at the bottom of society as well as those at the top. It was Anders, an apostate and abomination, not the Chantry, not the templars, not the nobility, not the Circle mages locked up in the Gallows, who took care of the refugees, the poorest, the most despised, the ones with nowhere else to turn.
