magic .ᐟ by the cars playing a little too loud and a BRITE LITE box held up in el's hands, head slanted, looking too curiously at it as she slowly concentrated on the words hard -- still bettering her reading skills -- had her deeply invested which caused the box to go flying up in the air when mike startles her. causing a scared laugh to escape before eyes lit up affectionately once her brain registered there wasn't a threat and it was her favorite person wishing her happy birthday. ❝you remembered... my birthday!❞ happiness could suffocate her right then, heart fluttering in her chest at the kiss he gives her & when jane turns to face him and hears he is making his day all about her. ❝ sweet. ❞ he is very sweet, so thoughtful. hand came up to touch his cheek to silently finish that sentence. ❝ thank you. it is the best birthday, now that you are here. ❞ arms looped around his neck, holding him tight at the reminder of how many days she went without getting to hug him, the best birthday gift she could ever ask for. ❝ can we have spaghetti... and eggos? maybe figure out the brite lite, too... ❞ bending down, she picked it back up to shake it gently at him, smiling innocently over the box with hopeful doe eyes.

"Of course. Always pretty. And always the prettiest, actually." Mike can't help himself: his eyes are locked on El. He's almost scared she would disappear again f he stops looking at her, and she's so damn beautiful. Even more than in his memories. He can still feel his heart beat so damn loudly inside his chest, though. Because El is here. She's really here... even if he was talking about this theory that she might still be alive only a few minutes ago.

He takes a step toward her, not sure he wants to reach for her, too scared he would wake up if he does. It happened too often before. "El, I..." He's not even sure of what he wants to say, it's like he doesn't even know how to speak anymore. He doesn't even know why he's still fighting the tears. It's pointless, he just knows they will fall.

always the prettiest... a happy smile twitched at plump lips. already mike was stirring a world of emotion inside of her. el always had this deep feeling that if she felt like a 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟 most times, she must look like one too. self esteem was a finicky thing, even if her best friend max had tried to help that one summer they went to the mall before angela squashed that again.

but then there was always mike... reminding her, even after this many months had passed, she was still pretty. even with her new hair, long blonde crimped waves and her favorite blue scrunchie. sneakers took another timid step forward away from the book case once he did, finding the emotions stirring in his eyes and her own emotions followed by tightening in her throat.

jane felt so guilty leaving him the way she had to and for him to finally not be a figment of her own imagination, her own eyes started to sting with the anguish of missing him for so long. hands had to reach out now, ❝ it's okay, mike... ❞ reaching for the taller now, ❝ i cry, too. ❞ a sad smile curled her lips as she wanted to reassure him. ❝ but i am here, now. i promise. ❞ and now doe eyes were pleading he would take her hands.

You're dreaming you idiot. There's no way she's really here. But there's something else there too, because this feels a bit too real, and as she speaks he realizes that maybe he isn't dreaming. Maybe she really is there, she's come back, that maybe it was safe for her now. The worry filling her eyes is what does it for him, it helps him realize that he's just wasted precious moments of appreciation, of happiness that she's truly standing in front of him. He finally steps forward, hands reaching for her own, in an attempt to appease her, to erase all trace of worry from those eyes. The eyes that he'd dream about so often, that he missed being able to look into. "No of course not" he assured her, "I just didn't think you were real" an admission that he has no trouble sharing with her, not after she heard him call her every night for 353 days, not when he hoped, she knew how much he loved her.

not real. sometimes she didn't feel real either. but that isn't what struck a nerve, feeling his hands slip into hers and then skeptical he wasn't upset by her disappearance then reappearance all over again. he must be getting exhausted of it, she wouldn't blame him. jane continues to read his features, closely, nervously. studying attentively like she'd always done with people -- even through the tears stinging her doe eyes. ❝ but i feel like... you are mad. ❞ a lump forming in her throat, that would be the worst thing possible. brows briefly knit at him, confusion lacing voice,
