You're dreaming you idiot. There's no way she's really here. But there's something else there too, because this feels a bit too real, and as she speaks he realizes that maybe he isn't dreaming. Maybe she really is there, she's come back, that maybe it was safe for her now. The worry filling her eyes is what does it for him, it helps him realize that he's just wasted precious moments of appreciation, of happiness that she's truly standing in front of him. He finally steps forward, hands reaching for her own, in an attempt to appease her, to erase all trace of worry from those eyes. The eyes that he'd dream about so often, that he missed being able to look into. "No of course not" he assured her, "I just didn't think you were real" an admission that he has no trouble sharing with her, not after she heard him call her every night for 353 days, not when he hoped, she knew how much he loved her.

not real. sometimes she didn't feel real either. but that isn't what struck a nerve, feeling his hands slip into hers and then skeptical he wasn't upset by her disappearance then reappearance all over again. he must be getting exhausted of it, she wouldn't blame him. jane continues to read his features, closely, nervously. studying attentively like she'd always done with people -- even through the tears stinging her doe eyes. ❝ but i feel like... you are mad. ❞ a lump forming in her throat, that would be the worst thing possible. brows briefly knit at him, confusion lacing voice,

He's imagining things, he has to be. A cruel reminder from his brain of what he'd lost. This wasn't the first time in the last 18 months that he'd imagined this very scenario. It even happened in his dreams, but he always wakes up to find that it wasn't real. Yet this time it feels different, maybe it's the hair. He usually imagined her with her brown hair, but this time it was blonde. Almost like the wig that they'd used to sneak her into Hawkins middle all those years ago. He continued to stare, a stupid action, he will realize, but it's all he can do. He's afraid to even blink, because then she will be gone again and he will feel miserable. Then he hears her voice again as she moves closer, away from the bookshelf and the realization that she might not be a figment of his imagination hits him. He stood up from his position on the couch, not daring to get closer, "No I was just sitting" his voice is barely above a whisper, heart hammering in his chest in fear that maybe he was still just dreaming. Maybe he'd fallen asleep on the couch and his brain had decided to up it's cruelty on this particular evening.

moving away from the shelf, doe eyes fall on the dark haired boy and her heart... it swells, tightens then sinks all at the same time. jane thought by now he would be as elated as her to see him again. then again, she did have to abandon him for a long time, left him to think she was gone forever this time– as heart wrenching as it was. but she had to, there was no other choice. and she always knew she'd make a plan back to him.

but mike, rightfully, must finally have gotten tired of it. what if he got tired of her? what if he didn't want her here now, what if just didn't know how to say it? ❝ mike. ❞ el speaks her favorite name, frustrated he seems to think she isn't there. for a moment tricking herself into thinking maybe she wasn't. CAN he see her? what if something went wrong and maybe he can't. her mind searches for anything as an answer to why he was acting this way. ❝ is something wrong? ❞ she tries this first, worry filling honey eyes, ❝ are you.. mad. mad at me? ❞

They had finally graduated. They had finally made it... But not many had. Max Mayfield was sitting in Mike Wheeler's basement for what seemed like the millionth time, only to realize that her reality would never go back to being the same ever again. She's learned so much about dungeons and dragons, but even then the mage wasn't back. Lucas and Dustin were on their way over, she had been early to help set up but also check in on Holly. It was better that way - to keep busy instead of traveling down the road that led to loss and grief. Billy was gone, Eddie was gone, and now El.. her best friend.

She sat down, looking at the layout of the game, wondering what the story teller had in mind for tonight, but all thoughts had been forgotten when music began playing. Max slowly stood up to see who had turned on the music, but when she sees no one, her brows furrow in worry. And then she hears her voice, and it's as if the air had been knocked out of her. In a rush to get to her, she knocks some of the pieces on the floor, but she doesn't care. In an instant she's at her side, hands on her shoulder, reaching for her arms and touching her newly blonde hair. "I-is is it really you?" she asked, almost in a daze. Was she dreaming? "El, you're... here?" brows were furrowed in confusion, and worry. If this was a dream, she refused to wake up.

doe eyes grow wider, sadder, happier, the moment max turns around and it's the first time she's seen her best friend in so long. ❝ yes. really me. ❞ voice comes out soft, like max might vanish if she speaks too loud. ❝ i'm here. ❞ nodding slowly because disbelief was even present in her own mind she'd been reunited with her friends. in the familiarity of mike's home and seeing first hand how much she is loved. truly loved by her group of people that have became her real family.

nose starts to burn, jaw quivering before the tears sting her eyes. amused at her hands exploring her new hair and then the idea max really has to touch her to see if she's real makes jane laugh. ❝ i missed you. my best friend. ❞ arms quickly come up, hugging max's neck tight but careful not to cause harm. ❝ does wonder woman... have a best friend? ❞ el randomly questions, thinking back to one of her favorite memories, max teaching her about all those comic books and showing her who wonder woman is. which quickly became her favorite character.
