Bauhaus-Universität Weimar: Professur Systeme der Virtuellen Realität demonstriert einzigartiges 3D-Telepräsenzsystem
The aim of our experiment is to determine if eye-gaze can be estimated from a virtuality human: to within the accuracies that underpin social interaction; and reliably across gaze poses and camera arrangements likely in every day settings. The scene ...

Earlier this year I organized and moderated a panel on Telepresence, called Virtually face-to-face. The panel was part of the IEEE Virtual Reality conference.
Panelists: Prof. Henry Fuchs, Prof. Bernd Fröhlich, Prof. Ilona Heldal, Dr. William Steptoe.
I am still hoping VR might lead to a new level of communication between people: for instance, with simulations that embody feelings and sensibilities.

Virtual reality is rising from the dead thanks to a start-up with global ambitions and crowdfunded technology to back them. Pleased to meet you, Oculus Rift
Project overview: Being there
The BeingThere center (or International Research Center for Tele-Presence and Tele-Collaboration) is a 13.6m euro (S$23m) joint project involving ETH Zurich (Prof. Markus Gross), UNC (Prof. Henry Fuchs) and NTU Singapore (Prof. Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann).
The project has a number of realistic visions for how telepresence might be used, and they have a great deal of expertise on display technologies, incuding multiuser autostereo displays (3D displays without needing glasses).
Sending a mesh across the net
Mekuria et al. explain how to compress a mesh captured from Kinects and send it across the net, in their paper "A 3D tele-immersion system based on live captured mesh geometry."
The paper is part of the ACM Multimedia Systems Conference (MMSys 2013).

Project overview: VR Hyperspace
VR Hyperspace - A European Union project.
From 2011-10-01 to 2014-09-30.
Cost: 4.6m euro (source).
The project aims to increase comfort during air travel using Virtual Reality. The research also includes telepresence, because people will want to communicate with friends and colleagues while traveling. Systems include scene capture with multiple kinects and entirely virtual systems using body tracking, head-mounted displays (HMDs) or large projection displays.
The project also includes a number of body ownership studies, on the basis that if we can create ownership of our avatars we might be able to increase a sense of presence and comfort.

Project overview: Beaming
Beaming - A European Union project.
From 2010-01-01 to 2013-12-31.
Cost: 12.4m euro (source).
The project emphasizes the concept of a "visitor" beaming into another location, where they may be represented by an avatar or a robot.

3DLife is a European Union Network of Excellence (NoE), connecting various projects covering aspects of telepresnce.
3DLife are working towards building a competence centre called "Excellence in Media Computing & Communication" or EMC2.
Project overview: Reverie
Reverie - A European Union project.
From 2011-09-01 to 2015-02-28
Cost 10.4m euros (source)
"Friday nights and field trips will never be the same again!"
Their telepresence research covers everything from using the Kinect to drive your avatar, capture and transmission of a 3D mesh, and autonomous characters.
