I came across your goth family artwork. Amazing work by the way. I need some advice on sketching.

I searched online, and the method I stuck with was to break down the objects into shapes and fill them from there. I tried some linework and continued with 1D perspectives and shape designs.

Got a bit confident and tried my first work, which was Bear Stack from We Bare Bears, and it looked so odd. I tried again with guidelines and better proportions, but their eyes look so soulless.

Any tips on how to improve?

First of, thank you so much!! I am really happy it's received so much love <3

Breaking down to objects is definitely a great advice and I sometimes use it too! (mainly when drawing furniture which is a struggle for me...)

My main advice is to keep drawing! And while that sounds boring, it means keep drawing what you love, keep finishing your work (even when you are not 100% happy with it), collaborate with other artists, take up bigger projects like art series or a comic, get inspired, but mainly keep drawing! I've had a few periods in my life when I stopped drawing, but I always come back, because I love drawing in general. Now I draw almost every day, however small the doodle is or how bad it looks!

And then other thing is - look at reference. Try mimicking styles or poses or compositions. Experiment with your style. Face/eyes in general are tricky. That is one part I am still trying to get better at myself. I look at facial expressions in drawing/art I like and try to find out why I like them. And look, here is my drawing process for the Goth Fam art! (minus the animation part). This one I had a vision for, but it happens more often than not that I have to draw like 20 sketches before I start lining.
