𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑵𝑰𝑪𝑲𝑵𝑨𝑴𝑬 𝑵𝑬𝑨𝑹𝑳𝒀 𝑴𝑨𝑲𝑬𝑺 𝑹𝑼𝑩𝒀 𝑫𝑹𝑶𝑷 the plates. Rubes? Nobody had ever -- ever -- called her such a thing. There was no need; her name was short enough as it was. It takes a moment for her mind to catch up with everything else Lucien had said -- and damn him for bringing a Tarte aux Fraises. Had he known? She couldn't imagine for the life of her how; he may have peeked at her file, but there was nothing about favorite foods in there.

For a moment, Ruby simply looked at Lucien, utterly baffled. Who was this man? Sitting at her table, casual as could be, having dug up secrets about her that no-one had reason to know. After too long, she remembered herself. Ruby cleared her throat, picked out two dessert forks, and stiffly set the table. "You are a singular man, monsieur," she said, not sure herself whether it was an insult or compliment.

the birthday dessert choice had admittedly been at least a little bit selfish - the tart was his favorite kind, and strawberries seemingly a universally enjoyed fruit with which to pair the puff pastry crust. he had thanked Jocelyne profusely upon pick-up, particularly on account of the short notice Lucien had given her for the order...

but it wasn't his fault that Alan had been so tidy with his documents up until the last few days, seemingly scatter-brained with his daughter's upcoming celebration. if he had only been able to sneak a peek less than 2 days before to discover Ruby's birthday, he could hardly be blamed!

now, with Ruby staring at him as though he had grown a third arm, Lucien can only arch a brow as he waits for her to continue.

"Is that flattery to get me out faster, then? a little extra push?" he's teasing, of course, already reaching for the knife to carefully cut a couple of pieces for the pair of them - even if Ruby did not deign to eat just now, perhaps she would upon his departure. "dunno why it's such a big secret, though - are you allergic to joy and whimsy, Ruby? seems like a bit of fun might give you hives!"

had to run to petco and I made the last minute decision to bring Helios... and he fuckin crushed it.

big boy got a clearance toy as a treat :) but god he did so fucking good you guys its almost like i worked really hard to establish his foundations as a puppy and he was so well bred and has all the traits I needed in a dog???

Yvette gives a reverential bow to the person before her, a soft smile teases at the corner of her lips, her expression half hidden underneath the ornate gilded mask. "I can be whatever or whoever you want me to be." She spreads her arms widely and laughs. "I jest of course, however, I am curious as to what brings you to me?"

'whatever or whoever' - it was a familiar concept; adaptation into the environments that might otherwise feed on those who sought refuge from harm, desperation driven yet tinged with hope of survival.

"a jest, perhaps, but still ringing with truth. one might consider myself of that cloth - malleable, so to speak, in function... but I come to you for something far more specific: information."

she  closes  the  door  behind  them  with  a  quiet  click,  turning  to  squint  into  the  vivid  green  light  that  laura’s  pip-boy  paints  the  room  with.  ❝  it’s  still  weird  to  me  to  bump  into  ghouls  just  out  in  the  open,  ❞  she  murmurs,  flipping  on  her  own  pip-boy’s  light.  ❝  in  d.c.,  they  kind  of  congregate  in  dark  places  —  you  haven’t  lived  until  you’ve  been  chased  by  a  pack  of  ferals  through  an  abandoned  metro.  ❞  she  gives  laura  a  light  nudge  with  her  elbow.  

the  air  around  them  tastes  stale;  particles  of  dust,  disturbed  by  their  entrance,  swirl  in  the  dim  light.  maybe  it  would  be  pretty,  in  its  own  right,  if  she  could  trust  whatever  it  is  they’re  breathing  in.   ❝  so,  where  shall  we  hole  up  for  the  evening?  looks  like  there’s  a  second  floor.  ❞ @tempesttragedy

"that sounds absolutely terrifying - I'll pass." of course, Lexington had offered ghouls aplenty, not to mention the ones she had cleared out for Paladin Danse or those at the detonation site in Boston... yet she had managed each situation with an abundance of light; abandoned metros with collapsed tunnels and not a person for miles sounded far more intense an endeavor.

"And you were doing this at 19 years old, fresh out of a vault?" times had been hard enough before the bombs dropped, but the wasteland was a very different place to attempt to live in. to even be born in. "I guess I had enlisted by 19, but... still. sounds like a hell of an unexpected introduction."

she has to force her thoughts away from the unwelcome reality Laura has found herself in, dangerous in far more explicit ways than her life before. it's easiest to simply move back to the task at hand, ignoring the pit in her stomach that seems to ache as she steps forward, toward the only other doorframe in the room.

"The second floor or roof are our best bets, I think - less likely to be hosting any unwanted guests..."

I actually find the multimuse a lot easier to get interaction on than pretty much any solo blog I've tried - except for the one, canon white man I wrote, who like. I doubt I'll ever see that height of interaction/followers again and I am grateful for it.

but yeah multis can be difficult but the format does not necessitate a lack of depth in the characters. a great many multis I see host muses that were on solo blogs to begin with and it was too much to keep up with or too frustrating or whatever!

"Gotta say, you seem to be in a much better mood than your friends." Not that any of them had reason enough to be in high spirits, but it was as good a conversation starter as any. "This isn't exactly a prime vacation spot, so I've gotta ask... I know just about everyone else's reasons for putting their lives on the line, but was wondering yours? Aside from the obvious, of course."

"Well, the obvious is about all I've got - " though his smile remains, a faint wariness in Lucien's gaze betrays his mistrust of the newfound stranger all the same. "All of us dead in a year anyways, so why not give it our best shot?" there had been a quiet sense of dread ever since he'd enlisted alongside Catherine, teasing one another as they signed away their last year, but it used to be distant, something considered only in passing, when the expedition had been a dream. the reality had been an oncoming storm which they learned to weather with training cushioned in laughter and camaraderie. now, after seeing most of their group killed - and not even by nevrons - all Lucien can do is hold onto his resolve amidst the whirlwind of moving forward.

"'course, the possibility of hitting the paintress right where it hurts helps too."

"Dunno why that is. Same juice, should stain the same. But s'long as ya get the juice off right away it doesn't. But frozen? Soon as ya touch 'em it's blue." Eddie shakes his head, not at all sincere in the disappointment on his face. Before he grins, lightly. "Mmm wonder if ya could. Or if it'd throw off the whole thing 'cause they're super juicy and stuff. Or if it'd be like when ya do it with apricots."

"Yes, they would probably cave in on themselves like apricots, I imagine. Maybe just a fruit leather, then. I haven't seen those around in ages..." a reminiscing smile paints her features briefly, gaze drifting as though remembering the plastic-bound treats in great detail. "They probably didn't make enough money to continue most productions..."

𝑰𝑻 𝑭𝑬𝑬𝑳𝑺 𝑨𝑺 𝑻𝑯𝑶𝑼𝑮𝑯 𝑺𝑯𝑬 𝑯𝑨𝑫 𝑾𝑨𝑳𝑲𝑬𝑫 𝑰𝑵𝑻𝑶 𝑨 𝑻𝑹𝑨𝑷. Lucien was, of course, a seemingly impossibly jovial man, perhaps incapable of taking anything seriously. Ruby can't help but wonder if the joke was at her expense or not; he didn't seem the cruel sort, but Ruby had been wrong before.

"Gestrals," she echoed flatly, meeting his gaze with far less certainty than she'd have liked. "You don't really still believe in gestrals." They were a fairy tale, meant to entertain children, along with Esquie and grandis and all the other benevolent beings on the continent. And yet, even if she knew well that Lucien was joking, a part of her couldn't help but doubt. If anyone still believed in gestrals at their age, it would have to be him.

"You're saying you don't? You really are devoid of all whimsy, aren't you?" he's fairly certain she's doubting herself now, likely not in her lacking belief of gestrals, but perhaps his faith in him. Lucien only allows her question to linger for a minute or two, humor remaining plain upon his features as he seems to consider, still watching Ruby.

"It's what my brother told me - Michel, the youngest of my older siblings. when I got my apartment, it was a bit of a disaster; older folks who had been there couldn't exactly move their stuff out before... y'know." Lucien pauses only briefly, still avoiding speaking of the one inevitibility of their lives, before continuing. "we had to clean the place out, and every time he lent a hand, this book would disappear from the top of one of my boxes. when I confronted him, well... the fucker said he saw a gestral do it."
