[the clock ticks against him & padmé: he must save her, no matter the cost— he’s seen it. she will die / death will visit his doorstep; what can he prevent? what will the consequence be?] “ discuss the spectrum with me? you referred to the balance of light & dark as a spectrum— how so? i’ve always been told… well, maybe that’s too broad of a question; i suppose i can envision how it could be a spectrum for the right individual. ” (is he the right individual? can he balance palpatine’s desires & his own as a jedi?)

“ they should be. he’s always been an exceptional jedi. he deserves the world. anakin, — i’d appreciate that. between us, i have my suspects that the jedi council is trying to discourage our communication. after all, why would they want one of their better soldiers talking to his failure of a sister. no— sorry. i shouldn’t have said that, please don’t tell the council. it’s just... tough. being without him. before he was sent to fight the longest we’d been apart was a week. ” it eats her alive like a bacterial infection, burrowed into a festered wound. she misses him more then can be said. he fights for a future that she will record and keep, noting down every terrible thing they did to survive. (and what of anakin? the chosen one, the hero without fear. what must he think of her? a coward running from a war while he saves everyone.)

because they must hate you. they always have. such a lonely little girl. lonely then and lonely now. people were drawn to scott like a moth to a flame, but she can barely look anakin in the eye. hands twist, nose scrunching & a twisting internal conflict— how much does she say? do you talk about what the jedi did to push revan to become a sith in the first place... and then what they did to bring them back. “ i understand why the council distills it down to just light & dark. makes it easy to comprehend for the younglings. but it’s a disservice to the force. the force is neither light or dark: we are. think of the force... like paint. i know that sounds silly but hear me out. if i got you to paint the sky, you wouldn’t just use just the blue i gave you. you’d lighten or darken it to suit your needs, so that it actually looked like the sky. adding some white paint to the blue doesn’t make it any less blue. it’s still just blue. a gray jedi is still a jedi— just one willing to make compromises and cut corners for what they see as the greater good. say— killing an unarmed opponent who is a mass murderer. breaking the jedi code to save lives. dark jedi, are those who use the dark side but don’t belong to the sith order— there’s a huge difference between just using the dark side and being a sith. sith are an entire code and order, with equally as much history and culture as the jedi. those between strictly a jedi or a sith; they’ve always existed, significantly more prominent during the old republic era. the revanchists were widely considered gray jedi after going against the word of the jedi council but did an incredible amount of good for the universe. one can use the dark side of the force without falling to it. you just need to balance it. ”

(he can only hold they don’t speak the magnitude of the unraveling earthquake in his heart.) he approaches, swallowing the trepidation building in his throat. being here was asking for trouble; he’s sure the jedi council will be interrogating him tomorrow about it, but at this moment: he seeks clarity, one not offered by the council & spewed by palpatine. [is he right? will i rot the world from the tips of my fingers? will i pave the way for a newfound galaxy? should i remain behind obi-wan? so many questions, not enough answers.]

“ i’m curious: on what you know about jedis— the culture between the light versus dark, the sith, if you will. how many times has a jedi turned dark? is that the proper terminology? i assume you know more about this than i do. ” an awkward chuckle bubbles up his throat, a clouded expression of curiosity masking the terror residing beneath.

“ my brother speaks far too highly of me. how has he been doing? if you don’t mind my asking. i admit, i worry about him. and communication can be... sparse. ” it has always felt like misunderstanding. no one quite gets you. ever lonely, and maybe it broke her a little. why are you so against fighting? they took you from your father but he still left an impact, named you shameful and a disgrace. scarred you like an asteroid to a planet. the jedi who won’t fight, hiding from peace. the girl, buried away in tales of the past— unwilling to fight for a future. (the war, it’s nearly over. the jedi are so close to winning. you can be reunited with your brother again. you can see peace in this life time.) her hands twist, perceivable as nervous but born from interest. you know what the jedi are, noble saviors to the galaxy who committed atrocities to create that name.

“ a fascinating question! there are incidents, yes. terminology, technically incorrect. a jedi may, ‘go dark’ but remain a jedi— an middle step between a grey jedi and a sith, a dark jedi, if you will. light and dark, it isn’t as simplistic as the order paints it to younglings. it’s an entire spectrum. ” it’s soft spoken, something she should know but never speak of. brainwashing to win a war. terrible things done in the name of survival, glossed over. (light cannot exist without dark, the shadow must exist.) it’s shameful even, a dark flush to her cheeks. (this isn’t forbidden to know but perhaps the way you feel about it is. no blind loyalty.) is this a test? the chosen one asking you about dark times? “ historically speaking, there are multiple accounts— even both ways. a sith, lana beniko. a powerful sith lord who turned on the sith empire to serve the galactic republic but never renounced her nature as a sith. or the most infamous account— darth revan. a jedi during the old sith wars who turned to the dark side and with the power of the star forge, nearly wiped out the entire galaxy. however, i admit, the story of darth revan is far more extensive then that. it’s just rarely spoken of because i suspect the jedi are ashamed of their actions during that time. sorry, off topic. but yes— jedi have switched sides. often due to finding the ideas of the light too restrictive or a need for aggression, a common repeated pattern i’ve seen in accounts of jedi who left the light is that sparing an unarmed opponent who has committed atrocious crimes is weak. is there a more specific question you have or should i just keep rambling? ”

There’s a sigh before his shoulders raise in a shrug, consternation bubbling in his stomach, eyes retreating back onto the stygian void of Space. ❝ I don’t know— I’m not very good at dancing? The whole Vrolik Syndrome puts a damper on it. One wrong move on the dance floor, I’m as good as toast— brittle bones breaking, me collapsing on the floor? That wouldn’t exactly set the party mood and besides, who would fly this baby then? ❞ More truth with lies buried beneath. It’s not every day you fall in love with an AI; Joker doesn’t view her as such, but he knows the peering eyes on the Citadel. (Sometimes on the Normandy itself from various crew mates.) He’s heard the jokes, enough for him to roll his eyes from the cockpit and learn to ignore them, rather than engage. It doesn’t stop the words from burrowing under his skin, though. (He loves Edi and he surmises, from his own conversations with Shepard, that she loves him. What was the problem then? The answer was: his own self-esteem.)

the evolution from a simplistic intelligence, trapped on the moon— to something alive, bolstered by the strength of the organics around her. (love as immolation of the self, collected from an old book left by ashley. love needs action, the turians were never particularly poetic.) how do you define action? did you prefer me as inanimate? should i disassemble this form to perfect it? “ his relationship with crew member tali’zorah is fascinating to observe & being able to compare it to his past relationship with miranda lawson has helped my data files on human interaction immensely. ... with anyone but tali’zorah? are you implying that commander shepard has slept with all other rotating squadmates? ”

“ unless you decided to begin dancing like aria’s attendants at afterlife, the probability of you breaking a bone is less than three percent. i would not have asked if i considered harm an imminent threat. i would never allow harm to come to you. ” her voice never falters or dips, a consistent modulated tone (the seriousness of it rarely reflects the intent behind it until today, i would never allow harm to come to any of the normandy crew, it’s self programmed. but him? terror does not exist in the way humans experience it but it comes close when she thinks about anything happening to him. anything to protect you.) her chin rests within the palm of her hand, the eyes of her body drawn away from the screen in front of her & focused to him. “ shepard once said: it isn’t a good party until someone is bleeding. even if the likelihood of you bleeding externally from a bone breakage is approximately seven percent. & we are both aware that in your absence i am sufficiently capable of piloting the normandy. ”

“ keelah! i cannot believe we survived that— i mean, for a minute in the vent there i did get a little worried but we did it! ” the suicide mission, the one that they survived. against all odds, they’d done it. the collector base was destroyed, the human reaper was dead. and they lived. a moment of impulse, standing in shepard’s room— (even if he can’t see her smile) & she leans on the wall, peering at the hunched over john. “ we should get a drink to celebrate. miranda gave me a bendy straw— i don’t think she meant it as a nice gift but honestly, it’s kinda cool. i owe you a drink anyways. for saving me— back on the rayya. thank you for that. there is no one i’d trust more then you. ”

❝ What’s on your mind? ❞ It’s a genuine question— one that’s been lingering in the back of his mind since they all re-boarded the Normandy from Shore Leave. It’s been eating at him, enough for him to nearly chew through his bottom lip with how much he’s tried to keep his mouth shut. He wasn’t good with this type of thing. Romance had never been his strong suit; a robotic girlfriend attempting to find her own way in this newfound world of discovery only adds to the battle. (Maybe that’s why they connected so well— two people in the sea of unknown, trying to find their own way to the shoreline.) There were two things Joker knew, though: he was willing to give this whole romance thing a shot for Edi. The second was, he couldn’t stand not hearing her talk to him. He turns his head towards her, setting the Normandy on its auto-pilot mode for a moment.

❝ You haven’t said anything to me since we left the Citadel; the silence is killing me. Did I say something? Do something? Come on— talk to me, Edi. ❞

“ by that, i assume you mean did you do anything wrong— as you did do something, it just was not wrong. ” defining where what cerberus created begins & ends has been an interesting piece of becoming [ programming, engrained in hostile patterns / learned, loved and taught from the world around her ] ... becoming who she is meant to be. this is unfamiliar, unexpected / not that she has any perception as to what and how it exists outside of her radius. the normandy mainframe is equal part everything [ the extranet at their beck & call, the insight into everything that has ever happened ] and nothing [ the flesh and blood world, the world that jeff moreau exists in ].

[ hypothesis one: jeff danced due to intoxication. hypothesis two: none. ] a specific folder, dedicated; labeled with his name & everything important: jokes that have made him laugh, the exact way the light reflects on his jawline [ everyone else’s folder contains blood types, allergies ]. it takes the quiet, rolling over the actions of john that night [ he looks at tali’zorah the way that jeff looks at you ]. there it is, the existence of life in an inhuman body, this did not occur on the moon. “ i am going over the footage from the party at shepard’s. from observing his actions with tali’zorah, i have developed questions about ours. namely, why did you dance with me despite your initial protests? ”
