Miyazaki’s visual storytelling thrives on a sense of flatness that doesn’t diminish but rather enriches his worlds. By compressing the layers of his compositions—merging the foreground’s details, middle ground’s action, and background’s context—he crafts images that feel like living illustrations. Take the Warawara swarming with dishes in "The Boy and the Heron" or the jubilant feast scene in "Spirited Away" : both are packed with vibrant details, yet the visual plane feels collapsed, like a tableau unfolding all at once. This "flatness" isn't a flaw but a deliberate technique, pulling us into the frame as if we’re unrolling a scroll of visual wonder. It’s not depth that Miyazaki aims for—it’s a sheer density of storytelling in every frame, a reminder that 2D animation’s strength lies in its ability to immerse without imitating.
Hananene = my happiness
Hanako cannot even feel the cold because he is a ghost, but Yashiro, the caring, selfless cutie she is, nevertheless shares her scarf with him without a second thought, causing Hanako to be flustered and twiddle his thumbs, averting his eyes from her. I love them so much. 🥹💕

Hanako is annoying and standoffish with everyone.
It's partly him having fun and partly his way to keep everyone at a distance. This is especially true with the other mysteries, he can act very bratty and it doesn't really matter because they know he's in charge at the end of the day. He does what he wants and however he wants.
Which leads to this:
In fact, even Nene and Kou had this initial impression of him. It was gradually changed by the fact that, since they're inexperienced with the supernatural, they HAVE to trust him. And even when he says he won't, Hanako still instinctively protects them. Why? Because humans die very easily.
Which then leads to Nene and Kou spending more time with him and trying to understand him which then leads to the discovery that Hanako is... Kind of sweet sometimes?
And this is how we get my favorite part of this manga and this character.
Which is that Hanako starts fucking slipping.
He can go on and on about how he's dead and doesn't care for the living and existence is hopeless and whatever. But as readers we already know how soft he can be. He tries to push Nene and Kou away. He tries to go back to being Honorable Number Seven, uncaring and cold and powerful. And everytime he just keeps failing because of these two.
(I could put more examples if I looked for them but I already hit the image limit and this is the best example I can't think of)
Are you fucking kidding me. He's the true loser of the idgaf war. I'm so normal about him.

I lvoe this ch I can't wait to be able to watch the episode 💔💔
I wanted to try making it look like layered wood cutouts! I got a little lazy near the end when I just wanted to be done, but overall I’m very pleased with how it turned out
18 Days Since Echoes of Wisdom Release. It's so cute. I think you did a fantastic job OP. Reminds me a bit of Paper Mario in terms of style (never played the game tho).
linktober day 14 - fairy
i love characters who smoke but i wish people would actually show the side effects of smoking affecting them. like depending on how much they smoke they should just go into a comically long coughing fit mid-sentence
I WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT BUT SURE.
they're so meant for each other 😭
