You know that trend where it's like "guy who would burn you for the world" vs "guy who would burn the world for you"? If you just heard of ATLA and looked at Aang and Zuko's character you'd think that the first would be about saving the world first and the second about burning the world.... But nah. It's the opposite.

Aang was ready to let the world be at complete war if it meant he could keep on loving Katara. Meanwhile Zuko quite literally broke up with Mai to save the world.

Heck, you can even look at it from how they both deal with Ozai. Aang has doubts about killing him because of his attachment to his roots and what remains of it. Meanwhile Zuko straight up go to his father after everything is done and dealt with just to tell him that if he had gotten the chance he would have killed him himself.

Aang is very much a "burn the world for you" guy while Zuko is very much a "burn you for the world" guy.

Which is why they also complete each other so well. Zuko needs someone that will keep him attached to the people he cares about when his own morals are dead set on the good of the world. Meanwhile Aang needs someone to remind him that there are bigger things at stakes than just his close friends' lives. Aang is the savior of the world and inherently a selfish person. Zuko is the runt of Fire Nation and inherently a selfless person.

I'm gonna be honest, I've only watched the first half of the ATLA live action and I'm sort of appalled by the amount of people who claim it's Kataang erasure without thinking things through. When the show was first filmed in 2021, Kiawentiio and Gordon Cormier were respectively 15 and 12, and then for season 2 they were 17 and 14. It was one thing for an animated TV shows where actors hid behind a screen without having to actually see each other most of the time, it's another when you put a teenager and a child and ask them to do romantic scenes. 3 years is a lot when you're under 18, and while I don't really care when it comes to animated characters, I do very much care for the comfort of actual real teenagers. I don't know what they'll do for the more romantic scenes of season 3, but I care, most of all, that the young actors were comfortable and were having fun, more than any ship in the world.

Edit : Adding some details after receiving some helpful replies. 1) Thank you to the person who precised that Kiawentiio and Dallas Liu aren't actually born the same year, I didn't double check my facts, and I apologize for that. 2) I do agree that beyond romance, NATLA did butcher a lot of Kataang's friendship, and I won't deny it. Especially in the first season (but that's more of an overarching issue in there because the Gaang barely interact together there which is the actual main issue.) This post was made for the people complaining about specifically the lack of romantic scenes in season 1. (The cave of two lovers for example or Katara's necklace scenes). Even if they were technically "PG" there were numerous instances already of child actors in TV shows complaining about how uncomfortable they were doing romantics scenes with their co-stars, even if both were the same age. 3) I'll be brutally honest "It's their job" isn't a valid argument to me. If we're following that logic then what they do should count as child labor and they shouldn't even be allowed to be actors. Child actors are already a loophole in the system and what they can do is rigorously supervised when on set and in the screenwriting room. There are already multiple instances of child actors suffering psychological damage from their time as actors in the industry, and we don't need more of that. So if the parents or the minors themselves said they didn't want to film romantic scenes, it's a boundary that needs to be respected. (And since I finished watching season 2 as I'm making this edit, you can clearly tell they're a lot more comfortable making implications once Gordon Cormier hit his puberty, so I definitely think age was part of the discussion.)

Re-watched "The Chase" today and I can't stop laughing at how it was from Toph's point of view. She had a whole soap opera laid down before her very feet and nobody aknowledges it around her.

In a total of 24 hours, Toph learns: that there's this guy called Zuko who has been chasing the Gaang for a while and that he disappeared one day. She then goes to drink tea with a wise old man who she doesn't think much of except that he misses his nephew. Then she decides to go help the Gaang in a fight against the fire princess. During the fight, the fire princess shoots a guy down, who happens to be the old man she had a chat with earlier, then there's this other kid who looks absolutely distraught by what happened. So oh okay this is the guy's nephew nothing much— DID YOU CALL HIM ZUKO. And like what do you mean the girl we've just been fighting is his sister... IS ZUKO THE PRINCE OF THE FIRE NATION??? IS THE OLD GUY I'VE BEEN TALKING TO FOR ADVICE THE BROTHER OF THE FIRE LORD?! WHAT.

Mind you this girl has been out of her childhood home, which she has basically never left for 12 years, for like a week and this happens to her. I bet she's never been more thrilled.

Sadly she's only interested in bad boys who are older than her but that's alright, kid will learn to be worthy of her! (he's the most powerful being on earth)

You may say he's bald. I'll retort with the fact that he is canonically a bit of a flirt, that he is charming, knows how to talk to people, has a big destiny over his shoulders that he does not want (very important the does not want) and also that he is a bit effeminate apparently.

Zuko is not Jinshi. If anything he's Shisui or Suilei (in terms of roles) or Basen (in terms of personality). Your Maomao can be anyone I don't care.
