How I Achieved Little Success From Working With The Best
Note: This article was originally posted on Medium.com as “Little Success From Working With The Best?”
For the past 4 years as a student at BYU Hawaii I’ve been working on different products and have really struggled to be profitable with them.
The frustrating part is that I’ve had really successful people who have been my mentors during all of this. Frustrating, because I have learned so many amazing things from them; they’re incredible people & entrepreneurs.
I figured if anyone would have a chance at succeeding in entrepreneurship it should be me! Their support and willingness to help me has been more than I could ever ask for.
Last night I was searching for answers as I usually do in trying to figure out this entrepreneurship thing. Again I was feeling so down and frustrated because I feel like I can’t get it together.
After many searches my last search query was “I’m a crappy marketer”. I’ve been coming to the conclusion for the last while that the lack of success I’ve been having must be attributed to my crappy marketing skills & wanted to see what I could find to help.
I found two articles in particular that were just what I was looking for. I learned so much from these articles and felt like it addressed exactly what I’ve been struggling with.
YOUR PRODUCT ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH The first article is called “You aren’t bad at marketing your product, Your product isn’t good enough!” Ionut Neagu in this article talks about how people had been approaching him to get advice on how to build their business/sell their products and were complaining that they haven’t been able to figure out the marketing for their products. They believed the reason they aren’t finding success is because they lack the money and/or marketing skills to promote it. He talks about how the lack of money or skills is not the problem but that the problem is with the quality of the product. He touches on 4 products that he has been successful with and how did it with little marketing. He says:
1.TRANSPARENCY REPORTS — WHY THEY WORKED “To be completely honest with you, I haven’t spent more than a couple of hours promoting our transparency reports. Usually, I’m just submitting them to ManageWP.org, and sometimes asking a few people on Twitter to take a look. Yet they still get mentioned at WordCamps, people talk about them on blogs, podcasts, and they have a really wide reach in the niche. Why? Certainly marketing isn’t the reason. I have spent waaay more hours/money trying to promote our other articles… The answer is the content quality on its own… unique insights that can’t be found elsewhere and that actually help people with ‘something’ will always work, and will always come on top of other content that might not be so revealing. 2. ZERIF LITE — OUR MOST POPULAR FREE WORDPRESS THEME — WHAT HAS MADE IT Before releasing Zerif Lite we already had 10+ themes launched, and I spent good money and time promoting all of those themes. However, when Zerif Lite landed, right from day 1 it generated 1,000% more sales and downloads than all of the previous themes combined! At that point, it wasn’t that hard. I reached out to some popular blogs, insisted they listened, and at that moment I wasn’t afraid to pay for their attention and for having Zerif listed everywhere I could. The theme was already way better than all the other free themes out there, so the promotion worked right away too. People started to write about it, it was much easier to promote it, and it felt a lot less like I was pushing it onto everybody. It all felt natural. 3. REVIVE OLD POST — WHAT MADE IT A MUST-HAVE PLUGIN Revive Old Post is our top social media plugin. It takes your content and shares it automatically to your various social media channels. It has been in the WordPress.org repo for 4–5 years, and we only acquired it around 2 years ago. The funny thing is that nobody does any marketing around it, yet EACH week (just Google it) there are blogs mentioning it, there are loads of people naming it their favorite plugin, and there are even videos on YouTube talking about it. Let me emphasize on this again; we aren’t doing anything to promote this plugin directly at the time of writing this, it seems to promote itself. Just like with the transparency reports, the idea and the way of approaching it is unique. It was the first plugin of its kind, it helps people, and it does it all for FREE. Building a product that is unique and helpful, or that’s 10x better than anything else on the market isn’t easy, certainly. However, if you don’t consider yourself a genius marketer then this is what you should absolutely do! 4. WHAT MAKES BLOG POSTS VIRAL THESE DAYS On the one hand, there’s so much noise that it’s really hard to surface with a new product/thing. But at the same time, if you build something that people consider amazing, almost no marketing is required, or the marketing work will become super easy. If a guy who hasn’t written more than 20 articles in his lifetime can get his post viewed by 100,000+ people and with 0 marketing, then probably you can do it too. Just focus on producing something awesome. And do it before you devote endless nights to promoting the thing… There indeed are people out there who are marketing geniuses, or who have loads of resources that they are willing to invest even if the return isn’t coming for a while. But if you aren’t one of them, your best chance is to focus on your product first.
HOW TERRIBLE COPYWRITING SKILLS MADE ME A SOUGHT AFTER MARKETER The 2nd and the last article I’ll mention here is from Bhavani Esapathi and is called “How my terrible copywriting skills made me a sought after Marketer” She says: “Growing up, I hated the word marketing I began to slowly warm up to the idea of marketing as I got older and that’s not only because I needed money for food, shelter(etc.)…. With the rise of…social media I saw another world of marketing, one that wasn’t…reliant upon shoving stuff upon people who probably didn’t care that much. In fact, to me social media marketing is the very opposite of shoving stuff onto those who don’t need it, it’s about carefully weeding out the ones who don’t need it and the ones who do I ventured into the fancy world of arts marketing…and as an entitled millennial, what do you mean I need an MBA to prove I know how to attract an audience? Doesn’t being raised by a technology qualify me somewhat as a birth right? I soon realized how wrong I was, not only was I a bad marketer but a terrible one in the best of my days. What kept me going was this streak of brilliance between extravagant moments of failure, something I couldn’t quiet put my finger on. After a good few years of being a miserable arts marketer who could deliver results with just as much odds as a kid in an arcade machine. I took it upon myself to find what bridges most of my successes. There must be a pattern that determines if one of my brilliant campaign or strategic ideas will take off or slowly disintegrate… I realized that most of the copy I wrote were evidently very fake and unreal thereby proposing mistrust than anything. Note to self: do not try to sell something that you don’t genuinely believe in… If you don’t resonate for the company/product you’re working with then you’re not going to be able to portray genuine likeness which often comes from being true to your audiences so being real and comfortable was a big part of the things that I succeeded at…you’re better off finding someone who’s not only interested in you but unusually excited which makes them perfect to market your products and services. …most industry-standard agency work demands strategic writing that can strip you of genuine emotions in an attempt to embed addictive ones. Because I’m a writer attuned to my sensibilities, because I know what I like… I need to find the right thing to write about otherwise I might as well be pretending to transcribe Ancient Greek…. I consciously acknowledge the things I could never promote or blog about so if you think you’re a bad writer or a not-so-great marketer, you probably just haven’t found the thing that makes you a good one yet. So the next time you’re stuck contemplating how to ‘market’ your work better ask yourself ‘why isn’t this work inspiring me enough to show off?’”
CONCLUSION: Both of these articles have taught me a lot and am still letting it sink in. For now, what stands out is to do what inspires you! Consciously acknowledge the things you could never promote or blog about or anything wouldn’t like doing, be honest with your self. I’ve learned that when you are true to what inspires you, the quality in your products, blogs or whatever your goal might be will come through. I’ve learned to start with being true to the light that inspires you and then the marketing/selling part will come much easier. I think with having this in mind, i’ll start on the right foot & have better success moving forward.

Innovation and creation are spiritual gifts. When we keep our covenants, it may make us different from others in our culture and society, but it gives us access to inspiration so we can think of different solutions, different approaches, different applications. We aren’t always going to fit in with the world, but being different in positive ways can be a lifeline to others who are struggling. -Sis. Eubank

I heard awhile ago about calves in the stall. It talked about how the saviors gathers us in like calves into safety. I looked up this term with lds at the end of it. I like this: “Contemplate the difference between a calf that is raised out on the range or in the mountains and one that is raised in a barn. The calf on the range is subject to all the forces of nature: inclement weather, predatory animals, and occasional scarcity of food and water. On the other hand, the calf raised in the barn or in a stall is protected from poor weather and predatory animals. Likewise, food and water are regularly provided. Nephi taught that “the time cometh speedily that the righteous must be led up as calves of the stall” (1 Nephi 22:24). I feel like I’m being raised up as a calf in the stall now. I feel so blessed. You could say what are you talking about you lived through some really hard things! That is true but maybe it’s a condition of in how I feel inside too. Even through these really difficult times I’ve felt peace inside. You could say how do you feel peace and unshakable inside when you feel anxious all of the time and nervous and edgy? I don’t know but there is a surety there. I’m grateful for that. Sometimes it’s harder to recognize than other times but it’s always there. I think thats him. I think that’s God. #ldsblogger #mormonmom #ldslife #lds #mormonism #mormonquotes Pc: Annie Spratt
Too Spank Or Not? What’s the right answer.
Note: This article was originally posted on http://www.tencowsinc.com as “Too Spank Or Not To Spank?”.
I read an article called “The Opposite Of Addiction is Connection”. What stood out to me was that we need human connection and what is being found, that many issues come from lack of attachment in the home as children. You could say that you could still have a good relationship with your kid while being physical with kids, but the highlighted studies below have some interesting finds.
While this is focusing on being phyiscal with kids, I think it’s not just about being physical, cause you could not be physical with them and still significantly affect them. I think it’s about connecting with your kid and along with the parenting style of authoritative and not so much permissively or as an authoritarian.
I feel like we live in a time where yelling, hitting or in general just being harsh to our kids is being more and accepted, as well as the normal. I don’t think it should be that way. I liked the information that I had found on the effects of spanking in particular. I see on my news feed people who post things how they got hit is how they learned to respect other & how it’s a good thing. Often it turns into differences of opinions and ends with just that. I think it’s important to note that over 62 years of scientific studies there’s consequences when being physical with children. It’s surprising to me how it can affect people, even to how much grey matter a person has & how those areas of the brain affect significant affect a person with how they function individually as in relationships. Parenting & Listening to you Intuition
Note: This article was originally posted on http://www.tencowsinc.com as “Parenting Thoughts & Listening to Your Intuition”.
The videos I choose here are ones that I’ve watched and loved. I realize that they aren’t from our faith but they have helped me in different ways and have felt truth when I have watched them. I hope they can in some way help and inspire you as well.
FIND WHO YOU ARE https://www.facebook.com/goalcast/videos/1448914951852357/
Too often I get really caught up in life and get really busy. I find it easy to lose sight of who I am. I know it’s strange to relate thoughts from a celebrity with the gospel, but here are my thought’s when I watched this. In the video Alicia talks about taking the time to “embrace not doing too much” to find your self. When I watched this I thought when I take the time to slow down and enjoy life more often I find that is when I feel peace, joy and light. That’s when I feel God.
I think a lot of times that we feel and have the spirit with us more than we think we do. Elder Bendar gave a talk about praying sometimes prayers of just thanks. He touched on how when we do that we can recieve inspiration on questions that we wouldn’t have received otherwise. When I have done this I have found this to be true. I have found that I get inspiration that I wouldn’t have received other wise. I feel more light, I feel closer to Heavenly Father. For me I can feel the spirit more when I take the time to slow down. I have found it to be true that when I get too caught up in what people are telling, teaching me, or just when I compare myself to others and don’t take the time “figure out what really resonates with” me I loose myself to those voices and struggle to feel what’s right to me. I am learning that when things “resonate” with me and feel right, i’m learning that for me that’s the spirit. I think it’s important to “get a chance to really explore who we are”. I agree with alicia that one of the key’s to success and I don’t think success is measured by fame our fortune, is finding out “who you are and embrace it” and I think when we do this we are learning the spirit.
LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION https://youtu.be/c73SAtK6Os8
I know this is weird to think that something inpisration could come from a movie director, or at least that’s what I thought but what he says is reaaly on point. I’ve been finding so much with my life and especially on my path to entreprenuership that it’s really easy to get caught up in the thoughts and ideas of others. I think learning is important and necessary but I think it’s also important to sit back and eveluate what you think and how it feels, and what stands out to me. I think it’s easy to get caught up in following what we learn exactly but don’t think enough for ourselves. I know he isn’t talking about the Holy Ghost directly here, but to me when thing’s feel clear and right that’s the Holy Ghost and I think we need to be searching that more than just blindly following what we learn word for word. Search the spirit more.
EMBRACE THE CHOAS! https://youtu.be/LtErSoNPnR8
I can definitely relate to this mom. When I first watched this I thought oh my gosh I think I am getting in the way of my own happiness! I think it easy to get caught up in the daily grind of things and love her reminder to find joy in motherhood. I think sometimes for me I get caught up in the lists of things to do, such as getting homework done, what am I going to make for dinner, what time does he need to go to sleep etc. etc. I love this because I sometimes motherhood feels like work and isn’t enjoyable, I feel like theres so much to do, but love this “If your not enjoying motherhood it, you might be the one getting in the way of your own joy”. I think I am, I think I can be enjoying motherhood more and think this is a great reminder to do so!
MY TURNING POINT https://youtu.be/1Ek9tfwcVMs
Ok this first image here looks like it’s going to be a Halloween message, but what this mom has to say is so important. There has been times where I have and do feel broke, and not sure of my worth. I want to remember this: “Even when my life feels like a crazy, chaotic mess, I focus on the little things I do have….I am done focusing on all the things I can’t do and all the thing’s I don’t have, all of that negative noise….and what I have learned is that…when I shut down that NOISE and instead focus on the thing’s I already have and the thing’s I CAN do, that’s when I feel PEACE and that’s where I can fully embrace and EMBRACE my crazy awesome life”
4 WAYS TO DEAL WITH A BULLY https://youtu.be/nFAUwxvD3J8
My son is a quiet boy and sometimes really wish he would just open up to me and tell me how his day went and what happened at school, good or bad, but he doesn’t. It’s rare for him to open up at all about his day at school. I don’t know if it’s cause girls are just more talkative and boys are more quite, I don’t know. I showed him this video because cause I liked how it was light hearted & taught by another boy his age. I don’t know if he gets bullied or not at school. Either way just thought this was a good one that touches on this topic and taught by another kid so maybe it would sink in more.
“Turn On Your Light” LDS Women’s Conference Review
Note: This article was originally posted on http://www.tencowsinc.com as “Turn On Your Light” Highlights.
This morning I read the talk from Sis. Eubank titled “Turn On Your Light”. Four thoughts that stood out to me.
1.”BEING RIGHTEOUS DOESN’T MEAN BEING PERFECT OR NEVER MAKING MISTAKES. IT MEANS DEVELOPING AN INNER CONNECTION WITH GOD…” This to me is refreshing thought. Often times I find it easy to see the mistakes I’ve made. I think developing a connection with my Heavenly Father is far more important than keeping a tally of all the thing’s of done wrong. This is such a beautiful message.
2.”BEING ARTICULATE MEANS TO CLEARLY EXPRESS HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT SOMETHING AND WHY.” This stood out to me because I have seen posts of friends on FaceBook who are no longer members of my faith making comments I don’t feel are accurate of our religion. I have often wondered what I should say. I would never respond because didn’t want to make the situation worse. I love this because I feel like it’s encouraging to speak up and say something when I hear something that I don’t agree with and can be done clearly and articulately.
3. “INNOVATION AND CREATION ARE SPIRITUAL GIFTS. WHEN WE KEEP OUR COVENANTS…IT GIVES US ACCESS TO INSPIRATION SO WE CAN THINK OF DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS…APPROACHES…APPLICATIONS.” I have been working on a business I have for years and it’s been very frustrating. I just have not felt happy during much of the time. The other week I was reading scriptures and was pondering on how how good I felt and contrasted that with how I felt when I worked on my business. I thought I don’t think i’m supposed to be feeling as bad as I have been. I have been trying to align my business and life decisions with the clarity, peaceful, happy feeling I feel when I read the scriptures and if it doesn’t feel right then I won’t do it.
4. BEING HAPPY DOESN’T MEAN TO SLAP A PLASTIC SMILE ON YOUR FACE NO MATTER WHAT IS GOING ON…But it does mean keeping the laws of God and building and lifting others…There is an energy that comes from happiness and optimism that doesn’t just bless us — it builds everyone around us. This talk how beautiful and am glad I was able to read it.
Raising Children & Gratitude
Note: This article was originally posted on http://www.tencowsinc.com as “Consequences of Gratitude & Raising Children”
For class I am to go through and find 5 infographics that stand out to me. A couple of the ones I found are shared below. I found it was difficult to find ones that had substance. Most of them seem to focus of facts which has it’s place and purpose too, but here are a couple that I liked and share some thoughts on each below the image.
I read this quote from Elder Utchdorf “spiritual light rarely comes to those who merely sit in the darkness waiting for someone to flip on the switch”.
I think this quote talks about the inner efforts of gratitude and this infographic gives some outcomes from gratitude thats gives a different perspective.
I really like this infographic. I feel like Elder Utchdorfs quote as mentioned above describes the is the inner effort in gratitude. I think this infographic touches on ways I have felt when practicing gratitude and found it to be encouraging to continue to do so.
I like how I this have some tips for how to work with my son. It was cool to go through it and match his personality to the different types mentioned here. My sons personality is sensitive and found their suggestions where true to what works for him.
I like this because of some of the truths found in it. I like #6 “Mothers who know do less”. When I think of this, I think how mothers protect the time of her family. They put family and strengthening relationships first.
Also I like #3 “Mothers who know are nurturers”. I love the thought that “Home is where women have most power and influence…Helping growth occur through nurturing is truly a powerful and influential role bestowed on women.”
That’s beautiful.
I think the world makes it normal to treat children abrasively. I know I’ve succumbed to this too at times. I don’t like it when I see it in myself. It doesn’t feel right and want to do better and has been getting better. I like the different thoughts in this image. One that stood out to me in particular is “Discipline is helping a child solve a problem. Punishment is make them suffer retribution for having a problem. To raise problem solvers focus on solutions, not retribution.”
