Just popping back to report that the Doctor married Jack Harkness
It’s been a big 52 weeks on Tumblr.
Maybe it was all part of a great big ineffable plan, but Good Omens was the most popular thing on Tumblr in 2019. Bigger than BTS by exactly 4.43%, but who’s counting? As for BTS…well, they deserved a break, but it did cost them the crown. Meanwhile, Marvel had a huge year. We could try to count how many Marvel-related tags are in Year in Review, but it’d definitely be at least 3,000. Steven Universe came to an end as a series, but came back as a beautiful feature-length film; the future’s looking bright. And how many SKAM remakes will make the TV list this year? There are two on this one—we see you, Germany and France. Game of Thrones also reached its conclusion (did we actually sit through all of those seasons for THAT?). Moving on to the Galar Region, Pokémon gave us the biggest gift of the summer: Wooloo. Thank you, Nintendo. Critical Role returns to this list after a long adventure with the Mighty Nein across Wildemount. And finally, we round things off with the Ship of the Year, our Ineffable Husbands, Aziraphale and Crowley. This is Tumblr’s Week Year in Review.

The paradox is that Alec Hardy thinks he needs a good ol' shag while in reality he needs a good ol' hug.
the fact that alec “emotionally repressed” hardy continues despite his own discomfort with it to seek out a sexual companion is indicative of his awareness that this is for the most part the only kind of physical affection that social rules dictate he’s allowed to seek out which is reinforced however unintentionally by ellie’s continual flinching and shrugging him off when he offers her comfort, while his offers of comfort are, of course, indicative of the kind of comfort he wishes he could seek, but he views it as only being allowed to go one direction - he can comfort her but she can’t him. he experiences some growth in s3 through the relationship with his daughter, but continues to lack a mutual, equal footing in comfort and affection from an adult who can understand the complexity of his anxieties. this is why the lack of a mutual hug at the end of s3, platonic or otherwise, effectively works to leave their arcs somehow incomplete, thereby leaving ellie bizarrely clueless as to his needs without resolving her own personal issues from s2 and leaving hardy suffering from continued emotional repression and touch starvation and leaving me emotionally blueballed as fucking shit, and I demand compensation
FURTHERMORE this whole thing is compounded by the fact that despite Hardy’s social anxiety and inherent awkwardness, he’s not actually oblivious to social norms, and in fact he’s repeatedly shown to try to engage in them but he’s unsuccessful. hardy’s a detective! this requires a certain level of understanding of how society moves, how people interact, how they react, what they do that’s normal, what’s contradictory to expected behavior, why that contradictory behavior happens, how emotional leverage works, the profound effect of emotional attachment, the effect of trauma on memory and relationships and how that effects testimony, etc I could go on. what I’m saying is that Hardy’s awkward but not because he doesn’t understand people - his little speeches at the end of each series shows us that. he does understand people. he plays lee and claire perfectly in the last ep of s2. he handles trish beautifully in ep 1 of s3. he handles ellie beautifully in the last ep of s1 and throughout s2 even though she doesn’t realize it. but when it turns to him personally, he flounders. he’s at once too earnest and too closed off and people struggle to connect with him and he them. his relationship with Tess is the perfect microcosm; Tess betrays him, he takes the blame, he still tries to get their family back together then gets very defensive when she turns him down and retreats to taking shots at her over the affair. he struggles to voice his own needs to his own extreme detriment and struggles to form equal footing relationships bc he can’t bring himself to trust anyone, even ellie - his refusal of the pub at the end puts her firmly in work category, not personal category, bc he’s good at work categories and not so good at personal ones. therefore what you have is not someone who fails to understand but who understands painfully well - someone who understands the thing but finds it personally inaccessible. he’s aware of his own anxieties and his status as being outside society despite best efforts. going to the pub with ellie or giving her a hug would have indicated a resolution in which he could someday find his way in, but instead he walks away, toward the water. he’s outside it. the way the show ends, he’s always going to be. which is intentional infliction of emotional distress and as I said, I deserve damages

Alec Hardy, every three months or so: I hate Broadchurch I'm leaving I'd say goodbye if I didn't hate all of you I'm never coming back
Alec, approx. 2 days later: yeah I'm back :/

Sandbrook doesn’t make me vulnerable. It makes me the best man for the job.
I despise having lucid dreams when I’m in the throes of hyperfixation. I just fell asleep and had a dream where I was talking to Beelzebub in a really casual way and I asked “oh so was Crowley the first demon to defy Hell and go native?” and Beez said “No, someone else did before him, here he is now” and it was Gordon fucking Ramsay
