Ok, folks, what if we start making posts to recommend people to follow? According to tumblr's twitter account, the other day 12 people (twelve!!!! can you imagine!???) joined the other day and some of them are a little bit lost, looking blogs to follow!

if you search a tag on tumblr for a topic you’re interested in,

whether it’s broad (‘comics’, ‘fashion’, ‘horror movies’, ‘game of thrones’, ‘MCU’, ’[name of tv show] or commonly an abbreviation for longer media titles, i.e. IWTV for interview with the vampire, or even [media title/abbreviation] followed by ‘book’ or ‘movie’ or ‘tv’ or ‘comics’ or ‘release date year (common w movies that have equally famous/well known orginals and remakes)’ or ‘HBO’/‘Netflix’ (common if it’s a show released on a specific streaming service) if there’s more than one version under the same media title, etc etc.)

or specific (‘[insert ship name here]’, ‘[fandom name] fanart, ‘[specific ship/character]’ fanart, ‘[specific piece of media] gifs, ‘[ship name] au/fics’, etc etc)

tumblr will automatically show u all top posts for that tag ranked by ‘most popular’ and ‘of all time’ (which are settings u can change— u can filter for specific types of posts in the tag that have gifs, or text only, or have media embedded, etc. as well as changing it to list posts in chronological order by ‘latest’ instead of ‘of all time’)

but next to that there’s a tab that says ‘BLOGS’— that will show u the top blogs related to that tag specifically! i can’t speak to if it’s determined by number of times they’ve used that tag in posts or by the number of notes their posts w that tag gets or a mix of both— either way it’s a good place to start!!

I want to say this bc it does not get said enough: most grief you experience in your life will have NOTHING to do with death.

This is not talked about enough and as a result ppl struggle to process grief bc the world is telling them that grief is something else.

Grief is about loss, and IF you’d like to define it as a loss of life it is not restricted to loss of life via death. Even then I’d implore you to not view grief as about death or life but again, just loss.

Grief is also about having a shitty childhood that nothing can fix even if you have healed from it as an adult; your childhood was shitty and there’s nothing retroactively you can do about it. You grieve the loss of thriving your past self was denied.

Grief is about friendships that ended abruptly, confusingly and again, there’s nothing you can do to change that. You just have to sit with it. This is the only way grief can ultimately be processed and all it wants by the way: to be accepted and sat with. That’s it.

Grief is about opportunities that have passed, experiences you can’t have because of the way situations have ended up, and having to accept that while you do have your whole future ahead of you, there were some things you wanted to be a certain way then and they weren’t, aren’t and will never be.

Grief is being estranged from your family and missing family closeness even though you do not want to be closer to your parents, because you’re grieving the fact that there is a healthy part of human life you will not experience through them.

Grief can be the job you lost, the plans that fell through, the events that spiraled out of your control

If grief is strictly about life and death, understand that it includes grieving the life you never had and the death of who you used to be, too.

But moreover, grief is about loss.

i couldn't really do optimism, it felt stupid to me. i am hopeful by nature, but not optimistic. optimism feels like closing my eyes. it feels like doing subtraction and calling it multiplication. it feels like the type of romantic even poets can't be.

but how are you supposed to recover without optimism? without that sense - eventually, good things will happen for me. i couldn't even type that sentence without hissing through my teeth. it feels so - sorry, holden caulfield - fucking phony.

i like cautious optimism. i like testing the ice. i have this thing where i can't really picture a "best case" scenario without knowing i'm jinxing the outcome, so instead i think - what is something i would like to happen, and how would i get there?

that's the thing i feel control over - doing something to get there. it's easier to picture myself, deer-legged and balancing; rather than having fate scoop love and virtue onto a plate and feed it to me like grapes. it's easier to picture a world that's still-pretty-bleak, but one that i am trying to be good in. one where the actions are mine to complete.

i would say i'm realistic about the world. i almost never find myself saying this is going to be amazing. i am often instead planning for the worst situation, and saying; well, as long as we're all surviving. i don't push myself towards any specific goal or dream. i am swinging from branch to branch, quietly enjoying the trees. i have never pictured that there's an end to the jungle. mostly i'm just glad i spend less and less time picturing falling.

the thing about cautious optimism is that it's also more forgiving. i don't assume i'll always have the energy to brush my teeth. optimism is buying the planner and making new friends and signing up for a thousand activities and redecorating. optimism peters out after a week. instead, i give myself the credit for just-doing-the-little-things. despite having no time for failure, i spent wednesday on the ground, staring at nothing. but while i wasn't hungry, i did make sure to eat something.

how many times have i said "recovery isn't pretty". most of the time it does feel fucking ugly. but there's this little glitter about cautious optimism - she says well, but you did try. and maybe tomorrow we can do 1 more beautiful thing. she sees me sitting on the bare floor in dirty clothes and she says you're resting. she sees me eating 3 cookies for dinner and says aren't they tasty? she tells me to view the things in my life not half-full, not half-empty. instead, she says. the glass is neither empty nor full, but at least you're drinking :)

Tips for a super busy life

If you're a college student, chances are you're busy. If you're a college student with a job, you're super busy. And sometimes things get hectic and out of hand. As someone who works full time and does school full time and has pets here are some of my favorite tips!

Don't have a super firm schedule for the small things. Don't block in times for things like lunch, baths, or reading. Sometimes things get insane and you need to have flexibility to move things around.

Slept in your makeup? Get some olive or coconut oil and clean the smudging around your eyes. Put on a light color shimmer shadow on your lids, put your highlighter a little higher than normal, and if you have dry skin, throw some on your brow bones, nose, and chin. Doing this will help give you a more refreshed look, making it seem like you got your sleep and keep up with skin care. Make sure to moisturize if you have time and remember to take it off when you get home.

Pack your bag/lunch/whatever the night before. I promise you, you're going to forget something in the morning so make sure it's done and ready for you to grab and go in the morning.

Cook big meals. Cook enough for 3 or 4 people when you cook. It takes maybe 5 minutes longer and will give you several meals.

Schedule one day a month where you do nothing. No chores, no work, no study. Nothing.

Getting up early not only let's you get things done sooner, but it makes you want to go to bed earlier, keeping you out of trouble. You'll save some money too.

Let your professors know when the semester starts that you're working and have family things and talk to them about the course load, assignments, etc. A lot of times, they'll help you out and extend deadlines when needed.

Make friends in class. You can borrow notes on days you miss.

Clean as you go. Wash dishes while cooking, put clothes in the hamper while changing. Put things away after use. It saves so much time and stress.

Sweep every day. Trust me on this.

If you're on campus, just study on campus. Don't waste time in a commute.

Work on assignments as soon as you get them.

Study a little bit evey day. Make flashcards on your phone. I recommend the flashcards app. I use it and have the premium version and it's amazing. I can study while I'm at work, walking between classes, etc.

If you're buying something you use a lot of, shop price per ounce and buy it in bulk. It'll save you time, money, and stress. For example, I eat a lot of rice because it's easy, fast, and cheap. I buy the 5lb bag for $0.07/Oz and it can last me a month sometimes. Fewer trips to the store yes please.

Freeze your fruits and veggies and basically anything else. Stocks, soups, sauces, meat, everything. This way you can cook a bunch at once and freeze it and have it whenever you're in a time/money crunch.

Use your pets as your daily exercise. Take them for a walk, run around the house with them, whatever. But they'll get you up and moving.

Take super good notes in class

Find songs about the topic you're studying and listen to them while on your commute.

Take time every day to move, eat, clean, and relax. Trust me, you'll get more done if you take care of yourself.

Get your vitamin levels checked

Keep jackets, umbrellas, keys, and shoes by the door.

Buy your paper products in bulk.

Crockpots are your new best friend. Throw some shit in there before you leave for the day and come home to fresh, hot dinner! And yes you can make much more than just stews and dips in them! They sell small ones at Walmart for like $15

Eat in the mornings. Please

Water will give you energy in the morning

Keep your things organized. And again, put them back after use.

Actual good first-time college student advice:

Wear jeans/pants that “breathe” and bring a sweater, even if it’s scorching hot out, until you know which building blasts the AC to 60 degrees F and which feels like a sauna

Backpacks with thick straps are your friend! Messenger bags are cool and all but if you’re commuting with a lot of stuff, symmetrically styled backpacks are better for your back

You are your own person and you can walk out whenever you need to or want to, so long as you’re not disrupting the class. Meaning you can go to the bathroom without permission, take a breather if you’re anxious, answer an important phone call, etc.

If you don’t like the class on the first day, if you can- DROP THAT CLASS AND TAKE ANOTHER ONE! It’ll only get worse from there!

If you can, take a class outside your major; it’s a good break from your expected studies.

You are in charge of your schedule. Your adviser and guidance counselor is there to ‘advise and guide’ but if you don’t like certain classes and you can substitute for others, that’s your choice.

Consequently, if you are changing anything drastic in your plan, talk with your adviser and instructors.

Pay attention to your credit hours and grades. Never leave this to the last week of school, you will be sorry and stressed beyond belief!

Unless it’s a lab book or otherwise specified, go to the class for a week or so before buying an expensive textbook. Some classes, while having it on their required list, do not actually use the textbook a whole lot and you might find some of it scanned online. Rent if you can or buy used online (schools actually don’t give discounts). Use your best judgement on what you think you need.

Tell the people who go up to you selling or advertising things you are not interested in that you are in a rush to class and don’t have time to listen to them. It’s less rude and they’ll leave you alone.

The smaller the class, the better it is to have some sort of acquaintanceship with a couple classmates. They might save your ass if you are absent one day or need to study. And talking with them makes the time go by faster without it being so insufferable.

You don’t need to join a club or sport, but internships are cool and useful!

If you can afford it, take a day off once or twice each semester if you’re too exhausted. Just be aware of what you missed and if it was worth missing!

Your health is the most important, this goes for mental health too!! Note: College-age/upper teens is when mental disorders like depression and anxiety are most commonly diagnosed. Most schools have therapy services, especially during exam time. Look into it if you need to!

Communicate with your professor if you are having trouble with something. Anything.

Eat and stay hydrated. Bring a water bottle and snack to class.

All-nighters will happen but never go over 36 hours without sleep.

It’s going to be hard and there will be times you might think about giving up. This WILL happen. You just have to make sure what you’re doing isn’t making you absolutely miserable and/or there is something rewarding and positive to look forward to at the end!

ADDITIONAL ADVICE

Don’t let a mental health day turn into a mental health week because you will be so screwed.

Pay attention to the syllabus and do not lose it. A lot of professors put all of the assignment due dates in there and ONLY in there.

If your school has blackboard or moodle etc. CHECK IT. a lot of professors will only post certain info there and not talk about it in class

Check your student email account weekly. A lot of it will be unimportant junk but sometimes it’s the only way professors will communicate.

Advice from someone who really fucked up their freshman year:

READINGS ARE NOT OPTIONAL.

I REPEAT. READINGS. ARE. NOT. OPTIONAL.

Put them in your schedule, read BEFORE class. And summarise it. For bonus points, come up with some questions about the text and go introduce yourself to your professor either after class or during office hours, and ask them about it. This will make them much more likely to remember you in a positive light (and possibly bump your grade up if you hit a hard patch.)

Your library will have a copy of your textbook. If you cannot afford to rent it, you can go to the library and borrow it from the front desk for a few hours whenever you need it. It is there for you, okay?

SO DO YOUR READINGS.

When planning out your schedule, make sure you have a plan A and a plan B. Classes fill up fast so it’s better to have a back up plan.

Reblogging this because when I went to college back in the mid-90s, I could have used all this advice. I was the first person in my family to go to university, no one told me any of this, and the internet was not really A Thing yet. (For perspective, there were an entire two computers on campus which had access to the World Wide Web, because it was such a new concept that demand for it was low.) This would have been relevant then and it’s relevant now.

Email your professors ahead of class or ask on the first day if the current edition of the textbook is required!

Our university’s campus bookstore required the professors to “require” the most current edition of the textbook, which was mostly a scam!

Unless there’s a workbook in it, most professors are fine if you go back 1-2 editions because there’s usually only minor changes. Instead of buying a $300 brand new textbook, you can likely buy it for $8.00, and I recommend www.thriftbooks.com as a resource

additional recommendations and considerations since most college classes will be online (some students are staying home, others might be on campus but all of their work is still online):

-lectures might seem optional because attendance won’t be required or you don’t have to watch them live, it’s important anyways. so please, please watch/go

-with that said, even if your classes are asynchronous try to have a regular schedule for yourself,

-it might seem weird and scary not being able to actually meet your professor and not being able to ask questions in person, but trust me they’re just as worried as you are. therefore, even if it’s scary or difficult be honest and reach out to your professor. it’s likely that there as unsure as you are, but knowing that means it can be better communicated with your class and accommodations can be made.

-even though it seems easy to just wake up and open you’re laptop to your lecture, still try to get up in advance (as in not the 10 minutes before). dressing up and getting ready will help you transition into a work/study mentality if it’s part of a routine

-groupme and emails will become your best way of communicating with your classmates, TAs, and professors. sometimes its weird because you don’t know what level of formality to use with different people, don’t worry. they’ll make it clear to you how they’d like to be addressed either by their first names or their title (in my experiences, TAs prefer first name basis, some professors like being called by their first name or nickname and others exclusively by their title)

i know that learning from home can be really hard, so i really hope these tips help. many students are now learning at home or in a dorm without typical access to classrooms. you’re not quite sure how to measure you’re progress because it’s harder to speak with other classmates. nonetheless, trust that you’re doing your best and others are too.

mental health tips i wish i’d been given before starting university

trying is much more important than succeeding

10 minutes of studying > not studying at all

being a college student is more than academics. it’s also learning how to enjoy your own company, learning and occasionally screwing up meals, wandering outside campus like a tourist, questioning your ideals and presuppositions, discovering new talents and skills for the hell of it, and SO much more. if you feel burnt out in one dimension of college life, that’s a sign to spend some time relishing in another dimension.

if you need more time, take a deep breath and shoot that email to your professor/TA asking for an extension. at worst, they say no. and don’t stress over properly explaining yourself/your situation. hell, just email them: “Hi, Professor. I need your help. Sincerely, y/n.” all it takes is that one initial reach out and the rest will follow.

failure does not reflect character. read that again. remind yourself as often as you see fit because at one point or another, you will feel like you’ve failed. it’s growing pains. once you’ve accepted that, learn to view any setbacks as a hint that you need to try a new method/approach. didn’t do well on that math quiz? don’t beat yourself up over it–instead, regroup with yourself and see which metaphorical gear got stuck in your personal learning process machine. for instance, maybe you used flash cards and that wasn’t really your style. act like a detective, not a bully.

THERE IS NO NORMAL TIMELINE FOR YOUR COLLEGE CAREER(!!!!!!). a lot of people need more than 4 years, a lot of people need 4 years, and a lot of people need less than 4 years. and every single one of those timelines are valid. the worst thing you could do is squeeze the living hell out of yourself into some rigid schedule that is incompatible with who you are and how you learn. trust me when i say u will find yourself doing the best work when u do it at YOUR pace.
