Another reason I'll miss Japan: I was in a used comic/nerd store and asked if there was anything for an older manga that I like. The assistant apologized and said there was nothing. Then, after the karaoke finished, the closer to the anime I asked about started playing. Customer service, man. Or good timing. Either way.
I had a dream last night that included a segment on fishing for shrimp. It entailed sticking a flat pan, like those used for gold sifting, into the water, then lifting it up so that the shrimps' tails get stuck in the grate. Pretty sure that's how it's actually done, yup. Going back into Osaka today. I had planned on hitting Kyoto, but I have spent more time in Osaka and want to revisit more of my favorite places one more time. Umeda area today. Funny. I thought I would prefer Kyoto, but I do really love Osaka more. Kyoto is still awesome, of course, but... I don't know. SHRUG.
NOT THE CAKE
My eyes only watered for one class in all eight of my schools. No other group got tears. And now I'm sitting in my favorite tea cafe almost crying over my last Japanese shortcake. Good job me.
Wandering the home center store buying cleaning supplies with my supervisor is great, since he actually knows what to get, so I'm just trailing along, happy to be free of responsibility for the moment. Also happy I'll be getting help cleaning my place! I don't mind cleaning, but doing so alone isn't fun at all. Bought a present for my successor I'm so excited. I always wanted a summer futon, myself, but never bought one. She shall not suffer as I did with dumb, hot blankets.
I'm done with classes. That's it. I don't know how I feel about this. I'm ready to go home, but I did like teaching. I love hearing kids enjoying themselves, and having fun while learning. I like talking to them, helping them, laughing with them. But I had enough negative experiences to make me question teaching as a permanent career. Will the removal of the language barrier be enough to make it better? I just don't know.
It doesn't matter how often kids tell me a class was fun. I'm so used to being told such things that I always doubt their honesty. Am I really a good teacher? Did I do a good job? Or are you all just afraid to hurt my feelings? But when I leave a class and hear the kids telling each other how fun it was, it makes me so unbelievably happy. It's a shame today was my first and only class with these third graders. But it is a good way to end my teaching career with JET.
Found a friend on a vending machine this morning. I will miss Japan's giant insects. Not the hornets, but the cicadas, butterflies, dragonflies, and beetles are all awesome. Except when cicadas decide to scream right next to you:
I got really sick during first period today. We were in the gym playing games for our last sixth grade lesson, and I just couldn't take it. The gym was hot, there was no air flow, my head was spinning, and I was covered in so much sweat it looked like I had just walked through to storm outside without an umbrella. I went to the nurses room to get a drink and sit down in a cooler place for a while, but insisted on returning for a picture during the last five minutes of class. The kids all asked if I was okay; honestly, I was not really, but them asking made me feel better. Still clutching an ice pack to the back of my neck, I went to second period with my fifth years. Two girls noticed and were quite concerned. I just love it when kids notice and care. We played games in a smaller room with better ventilation and fans, and I was able to survive. Played four corners and wink murder, both of which are great hits. The same two girls who expressed concern over my health this morning made BRILLIANT murderers, one of which winking up a storm around the circle and making it hard to find a pattern to indicate where she was. The other was basically a classic Japanese horror film creepy child. She kept her head down, her bangs shielding her eyes from view for the most part, and the mask covering her face made it even better. She would just barely look up to wink. Resting in the health room now before the next train so I don't have to wait outside for half an hour. This school had a few eh classes, but I will miss it for the most part. Also they have a precious bunny.
My fifth graders at WHY IS THERE NO BUS TO THIS DISTANT SCHOOL school made me a karuta set! It's super big, but it's so cute and such a clever idea; the kids wrote messages to me on the back of the card they made. Here are some of my favorite cards.
Little girl: Do you like Japan? My thoughts: I can order something off Amazon and pay three bucks for same day shipping if I don't feel like waiting a whole day for free standard shipping. Do you realize how magical that is? Out loud: Yes.

Do you see those faces? Those are the faces of four ratlets that want to go to America. They want to find their fortunes in the land of the free. And don’t you want to help them get there? Unfortunately, they need about $1800 to get from Japan to Oregon. That’s a lot of pennies, and this human can’t quite scramble enough money together in time to help these rats accomplish their goal. And honestly, they’re too lazy to be much help. Dunno how far they’ll make it in the states, but who am I to deny them the chance?
In all seriousness, I am trying to get money as soon as possible to help me bring my pets home with me. I was expecting a hefty bill, but $1800 was a LOT more than I anticipated, and I have no other options. Fidget, Errol, Hermes, and Pig mean everything to me. They are my wee patronuses to fight off the dementors I face every day. I hate asking for help, but I don’t know what else I can do. I need this money as soon as possible to pay for their shipment.

The price rose since we checked last week. I laughed as Supervisor-San said he had to have the change approved.

My weather app tells me it is currently overcast and 63 degrees. It is a goddamn liar.
I was waiting at a stoplight when I heard the word "teacher" from across the street. Three middle school boys were glancing at me and talking amongst themselves; I heard my predecessor's name. I went back to messing about on my phone. After a minute, one of them called "Kyasarin!" and they all waved. They made sure they got my name right before they said anything, precious babies.
