“Why can’t you just choose not to be depressed? Why do you let being depressed control everything you do?”

That’s all I hear in this confession.

Cas spends the first part of the season under a control spell, the next part dealing with the resulting PTSD, and the day he made this particular “mistake” he was told all day long how utterly worthless and expendable he was.

Literally anyone is capable of making a bad decision under those circumstances, especially when you’re feeling particularly low about your value as a person.

But yeah, I get it. Much easier to criticize than to be understanding.

I think we should all sit down for a minute and realize how devastating this scene is. And how painful it would be for Sam and Dean after finding out that Cas kept their photo in his little trench coat. My soul hurts.

I know I’ve reblogged this before, but yes. Dean had to know it was there before this. He’s known since he pulled the coat out of that lake. He’d been hauling it around for 10 episodes by the time Sam found the picture. It’s been months. And Sam’s just finding it now, but he knows Dean had to have known about the picture the whole time, and not only did Dean never mention it to Sam, Dean kept the picture together with Cas’s coat in the trunk of every stolen car they’ve used all season long.

It was probably enough to understand why Dean carried the coat around with him, but keeping the picture of them with the coat, because that picture belonged to Cas, too? And knowing that Cas had that picture for a very long time. He’d probably carried it with him all through s6, while he was “betraying” them, because Cas believed he really was trying to do the right thing, to save them. That was his motivation, that was his reminder.

It’s okay, I’m putting myself in the corner now.

I’ve mentioned a few times that I think Castiel was in Bobby’s kitchen when the photograph was taken at the beginning of Like a Virgin which Dean keeps among his treasured photos, because in the photo Dean is smiling at someone very much to the side of the person taking the photo (which is probably Bobby). Dean not having any photographs of Castiel was established, in my opinion, for a purpose – because they are star-crossed all the way.
