Memory loss? There was no way. Or, was there? It would explain a lot, that’s for sure. He let the wheels turn in his head for a few moments before responding again.
“I don’t really want to believe it, but, ha ha, oh man. It would make a lot of sense if I did lose it. Kind of wish I knew what I was forgetting if I am, but then this wouldn’t really be a problem.” He took another moment to pause, pondering.
“I have a list of a total of jack shit for what could have caused it, though. It doesn’t just happen randomly, does it?”
"It would most likely be the drug use, if anything. No, it doesn't. That's not how memory loss usually works, Dave." She had to smile a bit at that.
"You must have forgotten to take care of yourself... I'm not sure. If in anyway I could find out, I would, but..." Rose chewed on her lip, pressing her forehead in his chest and held Dave's shirt loosely so as to not have her arms awkwardly dangling from either side of him. "This is as much trouble for me as it is for you, I assure you."
They would normally be so casual in their interactions with each other. It was nice. This was an experiment if he remembered at least that.
Dave’s throat tightened at her question, and he couldn’t help by swallow, almost as in reflex.
“I’ve never done drugs,” he answered as calmly as he could. “But I actually found some… marijuana, in my room. I have no idea how it got there.” He chewed at his lip before continuing. “This really doesn’t seem like a joke anymore. If it is, it’s really fucked up. What’s going on?”
Rose closed her eyes tightly, and exhaled quietly.
Opening her eyes, she let the words fall out as smoothly as she could. "Dave, you do drugs almost every other day if not all the time. Sometimes we would go out and smoke a bit if we wanted to, and those times alone were really nice, actually..." She realized her words were escaping her meaning, so she caught herself there. "I... I don't know what else you've forgotten, but, it doesn't seem to be a joke, Dave. You might have lost your memory." Her voice choked up on her last few words.
Dave didn't hesitate to comply with his shades being replaced, listening to her intently.
"Albinism, huh?" he murmured after a moment before continuing. "I don't... Wouldn't I know if I was albino? Like, wouldn't someone have told me? I don't remember looking like this, though, so it doesn't really make sense any... way, Rose are you alright?" Now he rose to his feet himself, staring down at her from his height advantage with his brows creased again and it was his turn to place his hands on her shoulders in an attempt to still them.
"If this helps anything, I guess I could say all this weird stuff was happening after about a week ago?" he began cautiously, studying her face for a prompt to continue. He hoped telling her what he knew would put her mind at rest.
A week ago... She thought to herself.
She wasn't sure if she could feel any sort of ease however. It meant only a few things to her, but it was mainly that he left himself alone in his apartment for a week and started overdosing. Her shoulders felt warm under his hands, but her arms were still trembling over her chest as she clutched her cardigan.
"Do you... Do you know about your drug use at all?" She had so many more questions but there were only a few in mind for her to bring up.
Whatever she had in mind, she was going to be sure to ask.
She wanted to stay with him for as long as she could.
Just knowing that it was probably not worth it.
Dave stared up at her, now confused himself. It took him a moment to realize that she seemed genuinely concerned, and he sat his food off to the side as well.
“No one came, it was people online. Someone telling me I had upset students and another one asking me about cockring toss and saying they caught my class how to take nudes or something like that. Just really bad internet trolls, nothing to worry about.” His brows creased behind his shades as he spoke. “It’s kind of taking a joke too far at this point though, don’t you think?”
A brief pause, and then he decided to ask something himself. “Wait, does this have something to do with why my hair’s bordering on white? And why my eyes are red?” He took off his shades, a bit hesitantly, for emphasis. “Because that was kind of worrying me and a lot of weird shit has happened since I kind of clued into that. Did I get really wasted and everyone’s trying to fuck with me?”
Rose's eyes began to glisten at Dave's words.
It was a possibility that Dave 'got wasted' and lost some of his memory. But Rose did not want to resort to that thought.
"Dave, you have albinism. Your hair has always been white and your eyes have always been red. You were born like that, didn't you know? And, Dave you never take off your sunglasses for any reason even if it's indoors, please, put them back on." Rose desperately, but gently put Dave's sunglasses back on.
Rose lips were quivering and her shoulders utterly shaking. She wanted Dave back. She wanted to be assured for some reason that this was some kind of joke. She didn't like this at all.
He had shut the door and was following her until she spoke again, and that’s when he stopped in his tracks and groaned loudly, tossing his head back as a picture of maturity. “Are you shitting me right now? You’re in on this too?” He shook his head, finally walking forward again and taking a seat beside her. “Listen, you’re a bit late, two other assholes have already tried to convince me I’m a teacher today. Like, what a load. Do you guys really think it’s that easy to fuck with me? Come on,” he made an annoyed sound after his little spiel, reaching for his own box of Chinese and popping the lid open to peer inside; it had been a while since he’d eaten again. Whoops.
Rose paused from trying to break apart her chopsticks. What came out of Dave's mouth as of now completely confused her. "Wait, what?" Rose asked, almost in a small whimper if she hadn't caught herself before. "Who came? What? What happened, Dave? Of course you're a teacher- you're the photography teacher at the same school I teach. You know, I'm the creative writing teacher."
This terrified Rose to bits. Her own mother had drank one too many drinks before and completely woke up unknowing of who anyone was. Rose had tried her best to try and make her mother remember her, but to no avail until her mother came to a few days later. It was the most horrifying thing Rose had ever experienced, and she didn't want to experience it again.
Rose stood up, disregarding her food, and grabbed Dave's shoulders. "Dave... What?"
“Yeah, yeah, go for it,” he moved to the side as he spoke, ready to close the door behind her and stretching an arm loosely toward the futon and opening the door just a bit further as he stepped. “Man, you know everything about me. Of course you’re gonna know all the time is egg rolls time.” He chuckled lightly under his breath. “S’why I gotta love ya.”
"Of course, Dave." Rose rolled her eyes, but still smiled.
She walked into Dave's apartment and settled herself on his couch. "So, Dave. I heard that you haven't been in your classes recently. Is there anything you wanna talk about?" Rose casually brought up a conversation and opened up her own container of Chinese food. She wasn't aware of anything at all.
Dave had heard the first knock, but chose to ignore it until he heard the familiar voice of his sister, getting paranoid after the conversations that had taken place earlier. He took just another moment to register what she said before he all but tripped over himself in his hurry to get to the door and let her in.
“Fuck yeah, Chinese,” he commented as he opened the door, having his eyes instantly fixed on the boxes. “Man, you know the way right to my heart, huh?” He tried to joke, seeming to notice the worry that had started to set in. “We really do need to talk more often if you’re gonna bring me food every time- wait, do I smell egg rolls?” Ignoring how his sentences merged, he reached a hand out to the box he was sure the sweet smell of egg rolls was coming from before thinking better of it and instead bringing his hand back and looking up to give Rose a content, slightly crooked smile.
Rose shook her head at Dave, smiling all the while. His smile made her oddly uncomfortable. Something definitely seemed a bit off about him, but Rose figured she would find out as soon as she'd let herself in. "Well, can I come in? Talking doesn't work properly unless the two engaging in conversation aren't seated comfortably. And yes, egg rolls. I know you and your undying love of egg rolls."
Rose, after the elevator ride to the top of the apartment, knocked on Dave's apartment door. She had two containers of Chinese food, one container basically of egg rolls and other Chinese foods while the other didn't have nearly as much as the other did. She leaned against the door, waiting for an answer.
"Dave?" She called out. "I figured I'd buy you Chinese. We haven't talked in a while, so I thought this would be the first step, so..." Rose trailed off as her worry began to sink in. She knocked once more, and waited for Dave.
