PSA: Indefinite Hiatus

//Hello everyone,

I know I haven’t been active here in some time, but given all of Tumblr’s recent shitty policy changes and automated flagging nonsense, in addition to the rampant and constant issues and lack of professionalism, I have reached a point where I do not want anything to do with this website anymore.

This might change in the future, I might come back on another blog one day, but this is it for now.

I’m officially putting this blog on an indefinite Hiatus.

It’s been a nice time playing with you all. You can contact me on discord if you want (just ask, and I’ll give it to you. I still get emails for asks).

I wish you luck, all of those who keep fighting, but I personally am done.

“Fine,” Jack said sharply. They needed to have this discussion, but clearly the Doctor wasn’t going to talk. And Jack wasn’t going to stand here and act as his verbal punching bag. He didn’t even try to keep the hurt out of his voice. He wanted the Doctor to hear it. “If you don’t want to talk, fine. But you leave my team out of this. You don’t get to touch that, do you understand? You do not drag them into this.”

Without waiting for a reply, he turned to walk away. He paused after a couple of steps, turning back to comment coldly, “And it might interest you to know that no, I don’t know. I didn’t go poking around in Torchwood One’s files. In fact, I erased what of them I could. And I cleared you completely from Torchwood Three’s archives. Out of respect, which I can see isn’t reciprocated. So no. I don’t know.”

With that, he turned back towards the door. He didn’t know where he was going, only that he didn’t want to be here.

It was grimly satisfying when Jack finally gave up, because no, he sure wasn’t about to talk about this, and certainly not this way. But it was a shock when Jack brought up his team, enough that the Doctor actually looked at him, eyes wide and mouth parted. He hadn’t meant his team at all, when he’d said this. He’d actually been thinking of all of Torchwood aside from his team.

He didn’t say anything as he watched him go, though, slowly relaxing -- deflating, more like -- as the other left and with him the threat of talking. But in his wake, he only left exhaustion, leaving the Doctor rather depressed. Jack was right, he hated himself, and even more so in this moment. He hated how he couldn’t help but be cruel to him to send him away any time Jack tried to help. Because yes, he knew he was trying to help. He hated himself for it, but he couldn’t seem to manage to react any other way... He didn’t want to talk about it. It wasn’t worth it, nor would it be helpful... It wasn’t like Jack could erase what he’d done... What he kept doing, again and again. He was tired of this.. But he just had to keep living with it, he supposed.

That seemed to strike a nerve. Jack watched the way the Doctor tensed up, the way his eyes hardened and his breaths came quicker. He hadn’t figured the Time Lord would be happy about this discussion, but it was one that needed to happen. Frankly, Jack was concerned.

He leaned back against the wall, arms folded across his chest. There was still that sliver of ice in his tone as he said, “So I’ll ask again, since you haven’t answered me yet. You know what I did. But what did you do? What did you do that it eats at you like this? You think nobody is ever going to notice. Nobody is ever going to ask. Tough. You’re not alone anymore.”

It took a moment before the Doctor truly realised that Jack was not about to let this go. It didn’t make him any happier, though. Far from it. His gaze hardened further as he lifted it a bit, but didn’t quite focus on anything. He was on the edge of a growl.

“You know what I did.” He mirrored in a snap, almost a snarl. “You must know. Somewhere, somehow, that’s got to have been consigned by your precious little Torchwood.” His voice was full of venom. Yes, he was vaguely aware he was being cruel for no good reason again, but he couldn’t bring himself to care right now. “There’s no point in talking about it.”

The Doctor’s comment stung like a slap in the face. The Time Lord knew why Jack was alone. He knew what had happened. So this was just plain cruelty. His eyes narrowed and his expression shuttered. With ice in his tone, Jack replied just a little too evenly, “That’s low, Doctor. I thought we were past that sort of cruelty. You know why I don’t have anyone but you.”

He took a breath to steady himself before he continued, just as low and cold as before. “See, this is why I can pick up on that so well. Do you know how much I hate myself for what happened to them? What I put them through? You do. Don’t lie to me. I know you do. It’s plain as day. Whenever you think no one’s looking.”

The Doctor didn’t reply, but his gaze shifted to the side, then down. Because Jack was right, of course he was. That had been a low blow and he knew that just as well. But there was nothing to say at this point, what had been said had been said, and that was that.

When Jack continued, the Doctor didn’t say anything else either. Because, again, Jack was right. There was no denying he knew, he did. He kept his eyes stubbornly on the ground, jaw and fists clenched tighter than before, and cold fire in his eyes as he took measured, but slightly too fast breaths.

This wasn’t the first time he had managed to make the Doctor angry with his questions, and he was certain it wouldn’t be the last. “But I know self-loathing. Trust me. And I don’t have to be telepathic to pick up on yours.”

The Doctor paused with a roll of his eyes and an annoyed exhale, though he didn’t turn towards Jack, his fists clenched and jaw tense. “Well good, then.” But he didn’t sound at all pleased. If anything, he sounded a mix of exasperated and falsely cheerful. “Good for you. You can go boast about that to your non-existent friends. Fun times to be had, I’m certain.”

“Yeah,” Jack confirmed. “Not a whole lot of other people here for me to be talking to. But I think you’re avoiding the question. Why? I know you’ve done bad things. I’m not under any illusions there. But what have you done that’s so unforgivable that it eats at you like this?”

The Doctor’s eyes narrowed, just as his expression turned into a cold scowl. He crossed his arms and lifted his chin, just a little. Finally, he raised an eyebrow, deeply unimpressed.

“I’m sorry, were you under the impression I took you in to psychoanalyse me?” He shook his head and turned to leave. “I have better things to do.”

Steve and Tony + Making the Sacrifice Play

What really fascinates me is the expression on Tony’s face. He is absolutely terrified, he’s so frightened, he thinks he’s going to die lost out in space all by himself in a claustrophobic suit - but he still does it. He still makes the sacrifice play. I just feel like Iron Man/ Tony never gets the credit he deserves - like I don’t think just anybody actually CAN do this, when it comes down to it.

Also, I don’t know why, but Steve seemed to be almost resigned to his fate in a way that Tony wasn’t.

Well, Steve had just lost Bucky and couldn’t even get drunk about it. They were ‘til the end of the line’ and maybe he felt it was fitting that the end came for both of them so close together.

My impression is that Steve also glorified the heroic sacrifice, much the way he glorified fighting in general. Consider that his nightmare in AoU was that the war was over and he was unneeded. His distrust of stopping a war before it starts and feeling that losing together was a good thing. Altogether, I kinda think that’s the ending Steve wanted for his story, like a less over the top version of Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump.

Excerpts from Benjamin Cook’s set report in DWM 408

[after their disastrous first day of filming in a sandstorm] How far is David’s patience tested on a day like this? “Although it’s been miserable today,” he replies, “and obviously everyone’s tense, people haven’t collapsed into depression about it - maybe because we’re away and it’s novel. It’s pretty grim, the sand being blasted in our faces all day, in your eyes and mouth, but everyone has to look to exactly what they need to do to make this machine that’s malfunctioning run as efficiently as it can under the circumstances. That’s all I’ve hoped to do, to try to keep it together.”

“It was a day of days,” says James [Strong, director], “but we staggered to the end. The worst thing about it, knowing how beautiful that desert is, was the thought that perhaps we’d go home to Cardiff with this really quite average footage. What an absolute shame.”

[the next day] “BLUE SKY!” shouts a delighted David Tennant, as the sun rises in - yes! - a crystal clear sky. “Let’s get going.”

The plan is to re-shoot yesterday’s wide shots first, including the abandoned stuff with the crane. Bizarrely, nothing much goes wrong. Michelle grazes her finger, but only slightly, so she puts on a plaster. “I’ll sell it on eBay,” she says. DWM gets its shemagh [the red-and-white head-covering the crew used to keep blowing sand out of their faces] caught in its zip. Um, that’s about it. This can’t be right. Where’s the catastrophe?!

David Tennant’s Contributions to Doctor Who Episodes “Sarah Jane Smith” Edition

Excerpt from Benjamin Cook’s interview with David Tennant from DWM 440:

He stops mid-sentence, and smiles. “I got to call her Sarah. Everyone else had to call her Sarah Jane. When we did School Reunion, she was very much written as Sarah Jane, and that’s how she referred to herself. It was Lis who came to me and said, ‘It’s a wonderful script, but the Doctor always used to call her Sarah, back in the day.’ I said, ‘You’re absolutely right. Of course! I remember that vividly.’ It was Lis’ idea, although I was very happy to go along with it.”

“What almost never happened when I worked on Doctor Who was, the scripts just never needed tinkering with,” he continues. “If there were anything to change, Russell and I might have a brief chat, but once the cameras had started rolling, the scripts basically remained unchanged. That name thing was an exception. Lis and I just did it. It was a little tribute to the days of old. A couple of times, people queried it, and we’d just go, ‘Ah, no, that’s just… that’s what it’s meant to be.’ We were kind of stubborn about it. Until, in the end, a line or two was put in to slightly explain why I was calling Sarah something different to everyone else,” he laughs.

I love his telling of the story above, with he and Lis conspiring together to go off-script and being “kind of stubborn about it”.
