I’M ALIVE I SWEAR!
Sorry I vanished off the face of the Earth with no explanation… I’ve been super duper busy lately with school, and I’m still in the process of settling into my new routine. Please bear with me while I try to figure out a regular update schedule for my blogs.

Her smile was only greeted with suspicion, and words even more doubt. He was not a stranger to the speech, though it was a first that an Octarian was giving it. He was a stubborn octopus, those who knew him could agree on that one thing. He let the other speak their mind, though his mind would never sway from the truth it would believe: Inklings were a menace. Even if there were one or two good ones, most were slimy little hipsters that he wanted nothing to do with.
“ I can’t promise that, ” DJ Octavio had rehearsed that line about a hundred times before, with other Agents of the Squidbeak Splatoon and their Cap'n. They all attempted to have him promise the same thing, and were as unsuccessful as now. “ Whether or not we’re more accepted doesn’t change the state of our home. Until our domes stop collapsin’ and we have stable energy I am not promising anything. ”
“ You all can run up there if you want, you can participate in their stupid turf wars, act like ‘em or whatever. ” His voice only growing colder with each word spoken “ It ain’t gonna be peace until they offer us a proper solution to the hell they condemned us to a hundred years ago. ”
“The Inklings aren’t going to serve us a solution on a silver platter, no matter if that’s the right thing to do or not,” Manami pointed out, her voice taking on a bitter, frustrated tone to match Octavio’s. “Both parties have to come to an agreement, and as the leader of the Octarians, you’re in a better position to bargain for one than someone like me.” “However, you’ll need the support of Inkopolis citizens if you’re going to campaign for change. That’s why it’s so important that we’re accepted into Inkling society. I’ve met many people who would like to repair the damage done and make things right with the Octarians... This includes the members of the New Squidbeak Splatoon,” she said, hoping that he would not get angry at the mention of his enemies. “Cap’n Cuttlefish -- the very same one who fought against our kind in the Great Turf War so many years ago -- told me that any fan of the Calamari Inkantation is a friend of his, and he doesn’t see species. I guess he’s mellowed with age?” It was a lame explanation, yes, but it was the best one she could come up with. “If he can learn to overcome his own bigotry, surely you can in time.” “I know you probably look at my leaving as an act of betrayal, but I think about you and all the Octarians every day. I want to see you have homes that are warm and full of light. I want to show you the sights of Inkopolis, introduce you to popular culture, and watch you rock out at an Off the Hook concert.” She had to giggle a little at that mental image. “It’s obvious the war route isn’t working, so why not try a peaceful method instead? It's better to live among the Inklings than continue suffering in the domes, right?” The Octoling sighed. “I understand why you think it’s unfair for us to deal with these hardships and not the Inklings, but while it may be tempting to seek revenge, that’ll get us nowhere. Maybe we should be the bigger cephalopods and forgive them for their past mistakes. Unlike those humans, it's unlikely we'll repeat history.”

Aria often covered hers up with sweaters or other long-sleeved shirts…she just got fewer questions that way. There weren’t many Inklings or Octolings with scars around, after all. Today happened to be a day where she wasn’t bothering to cover them up.
Well, the arms, at least…she always covered her lower back like Manami did. She hadn’t worn a crop top since arriving in Inkopolis.
“I, uh…” Carp, how the shell are you supposed to ask someone if they’re the same person as you? “I noticed we look kind of, uh…kind of similar. Did you come here from deep underground?”
Manami gulped nervously. “Yes... How did you know?” As far as she knew, the Deepsea Metro was a very well-kept secret. Cap’n Cuttlefish, Pearl, Marina, Agent 3, and herself were directly involved; Callie, Marie, and Agent 4 were informed after the fact. She supposed some residents of Inkopolis might have noticed the NILS statue emerging from the ocean and aiming its weapon at the city, but they definitely would not have known it was part of a testing facility located right under their feet. This Octoling was definitely aware of it, though... She would have to text Marina about this later. First, she wanted more information. “Who are you?” she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly.

Aria just blinked as she caught site of a…familiar-looking Octoling as she was grabbing a bite at Crusty Sean’s. Normally she wouldn’t take too much notice of other Octolings in the square, and this other Octoling did have a different ink color and eye color than she did, but…
Some of those scars looked awfully familiar.
Aria quickly finished up her meal, standing and awkwardly approaching the other Octo. She reached up and grabbed the back of her own neck out of habit, looking to the side.
“Hey, uh…is it alright if I ask you something?”
Manami turned around to find... Herself? How was that possible? Yet there was no denying the uncanny similarities between them. The other Octoling even had the same kind of scarring on her arms... She crossed hers self-consciously. ‘I knew I should’ve worn long sleeves today,’ she silently lamented. ‘I may feel like I’m melting in the heat, but it’s worth it to cover up these marks.’ Her pink t-shirt hid the worst of them, though. Manami would much rather have her arms exposed than the patch of faded blue-green skin on her lower back. She could explain away the others (a childhood accident was her favorite cover story), but that one... It was in such an odd place, there was little doubt it was an intentionally -- and repeatedly -- inflicted wound. “Um, sure, I guess,” she replied to her doppelgänger. “What’s up?”

Her words, all of them had him absolutely dumbfounded. Stumped and appalled at why she would ever say that about him. They couldn’t be friends, not after everything he did to hurt her. He didn’t deserve it, and he thought she knew this. He wanted to decline her offer and just go home but… What she said just stuck something inside and made it feel okay. Made it feel relieving to hear such a thing, come from Agent 8 of all people. Maybe he could fix things at least, a little bit…
“…Why would you want to be friends with me? I tried to.. I-I tried to kill you like I did everyone else.” He spoke softly and quietly, so that nobody else heard. Unlike the previous time she’d seen him, Tartar now spoke in a manner that made him seem terribly guilty. As if he felt remorseful, and he did, his words were filled with it, the more he spoke.
“I don’t.. deserve it..” He said, rounded ears lowering as he averted his gaze again. He blinked furiously, trying not to let the tears show. “….I was made this way against my will. I was an AI, but now I’m this. To stay.”
“Everyone deserves a second chance,” Manami said determinedly. Sounds like Tartar was not about to win this argument. “You’ve done something that many can’t bring themselves to do: recognize you’ve royally screwed up and take steps to fix it as best you can,” she pointed out. “I admire you for that.” “Do you know anything about who I was before I went through the Metro?” Her voice dropped to just above a whisper, indicating that what she was about to tell him was difficult for her to say. “I was a soldier in the Octarian Army -- that is to say, the enemy of Agent 3, Cap’n Cuttlefish, and the rest of the New Squidbeak Splatoon... Yet today, we’re all very close. If they can befriend me, I can befriend you.” “Also...” She released her grip on his shoulders to take his hands in her own. “I think you need a friend. I know I did when I first got here. Without Pearl, Marina, Agent 3, and Cap'n Cuttlefish, I would’ve been so lost. If you really don’t believe you deserve this, don’t think about it as becoming friends with Agent 8... Think about it as making a friend who’s going to help you learn about Inkopolis.” Manami’s interest was piqued by his explanation of his new form. “Against your will... How is that possible? Did someone else do this to you?” she asked. “I can imagine there are far worse things to be stuck as than an Octoling, though...”

Tartar flinched when she almost spat out her drink and he wanted to just get up and leave but kept himself rooted there. Forcing himself to stay, his mouth opened but no words ever came from it. It closed and the strange Octoling looked down and away, somewhat… guiltily?
“No I’m sorry..” He gathered his things and stood up, avoiding eye-contact. “..I shouldn’t be here.” From what he was saying, it didn’t seem to be a coincidence. Wow, way to blow your cover on the first day here. Another failure, just like him.
Manami got on her feet and reached over the table, putting both hands on his shoulders. “Please... Stay.” All of her gut instincts screamed at her to let him go, but her heart disagreed. Looking back on that fateful battle that already seemed like a lifetime ago, she tried to consider Tartar’s point of view. Thousands of years spent waiting around for the next intelligent species must have been rough, and though she still thought trying to destroy Inkopolis was a bit extreme, she understood the desperation he must have felt to complete the mission his creator gave him. Not unlike how a certain Octoling may have repeatedly attacked the Agents of the New Squidbeak Splatoon and helped steal the Great Zapfish to please the ruler of her people. Tartar was probably scared of her, she realized. His eyes and body language betrayed his feelings: fear, loneliness, remorse... He was hurting for a friend. She could definitely relate. He would not earn Manami’s trust immediately, of course. Given time, though... She could see them getting along swimmingly. Their scars were still fresh, but they would heal -- literally and metaphorically. “Our relationship did have a less than stellar beginning,” she admitted, “but it’s obvious the both of us have grown and changed since then. If you’re willing, we can start over and try again. I think we could become good friends.” “Speaking of changing... How did you turn yourself into an Octoling? Did you make a machine or something?” She sounded genuinely impressed.

“I do too..” He went silent again, feeling really embarrassed as they sat there in silence. He looked back at his phone to help distract him and stared at it until she spoke again, this time introducing herself and asking for his name. At the question he seemed to tense up and there was a moment in which he hesitated before finally answering in a volume that could only be described as near-whispering.
“I’m.. I-I’m uh.. Tartar.”
Manami nearly spat out her shake in shock. ‘Tartar? THE Tartar?’ she thought. There was only one person (if he could be called that) she knew with that name, and he was Commander Tartar, an AI who almost blended her into blue-green primordial ooze. Now that she thought about it, the tips of his tentacles were nearly the same color as Commander Tartar’s “ink”... The Octoling then realized she had a horrified expression on her face. “Oh, sorry,” she said. “It’s, um, nice to meet you... Tartar.” 'Cod, I hope this is just a crazy coincidence.'

Tartar had been back up on the surface again, this time doing a lot better than before. He was sitting at one of the tables near the food truck that he recognized as the one 460 had been so eager to make disappear before. He was messing around on his phone when someone came over and sat beside him. They had been sitting there for a few minutes when he decided to start thinking out loud, periodically forgetting that he wasn’t alone. When he heard her ask him that, his face turned a slight shade of green with embarrassment. Along with it his ears seemed to lower and lay back.
“W-Well yes… I did. But.. it feels nice okay??” He replied, sounding just as embarrassed as he looked.
“Hey, I’m not judging,” Manami said, giggling a little at his reaction. “I’m not sure I’d trust someone else to do it, but I’ve scratched my own ears when they get itchy...” Well, this was a very weird conversation. She finished her Seanwich in uncomfortable silence, then picked up her shake. As he went back to playing on his phone, she took the opportunity to silently analyze his appearance. First off, his tentacles were styled differently than most other Octolings. He had a crown on his head, which was pretty fresh, but the white leather jacket and glasses sort of ruined it. She had half a mind to give him fashion tips, but she decided to hold her tongue -- it would be very rude of her to critique a stranger’s style. Speaking of which, she had neglected to introduce herself... “I’m Manami, by the way. What’s your name?”

Saan blinked slowly, adjusting their shades quietly rather than speaking at first. At the very least though, it was clear that their body language wasn’t hostile, so nothing bad should happen.
“Yes, but… don’t know… how to play. Ranked.”
Manami almost said ‘Really? For eel?’ before she remembered who she was talking to. She supposed the Metro stations that mimicked Ranked modes were not adequate practice for the real deal. “Well, that makes two of us,” she replied. “I’ve been doing this for a while, but I’m still a novice. Maybe we can learn together?”
Miscellaneous Headcanons #1
Manami talks quite formally and doesn’t use much slang because she learned Inkling mostly from reading books. She was taught a bit of the language as part of her training with the Octarian Army, but she has become basically fluent since she moved to Inkopolis.
She idolizes the Squid Sisters and literally feels like she might faint while in their presence.
Her main weapons are the Splattershot and Splat Dualies.
She still has her Octoshot, but she doesn’t use it due to the bad memories associated with it.
She enjoys tinkering with weapons, but she can’t modify the ones she uses for battling due to strict regulations. When she’s messing around in Ammo Knights, though, she can go wild with her mods.
Her favorite of these projects is a Splattershot that allows the user to dodge roll (inspired by Agent 3′s weapon).
This is less of a headcanon and more of a fun fact, but I’m putting it here anyway: Manami’s name is Japanese. It comes from 愛 (mana) meaning "love, affection" and 美 (mi) meaning "beautiful" or 海 (mi) meaning "sea, ocean.”
She found the name in a book shortly after escaping the Deepsea Metro, and she liked it a lot; she knew she couldn’t keep going by ‘Agent 8′ or ‘Eight,’ so she adopted it as her name. She still can’t recall her original name, if she even had one.

“Well… the thing about Octo Canyon is that it’s so far away from everything else… It’s really quiet.” Out of everything, that’s what she’d liked the most about it. Peace and quiet, a place nobody would find her, even Marie. It hadn’t worked out as well as she’d hoped.
She doesn’t look the octoling in the face, staring down at the ground instead. “I guess it’s hard to imagine it being better than the city, but it was what I really needed, and… maybe that story got out because otherwise nobody would want me there. Which is fair, I guess, I did help take the zapfish back last time. But if I was there under Octavio’s control, there’d be nothing to worry about, right? It all got really out of hand, he wasn’t supposed to steal the stupid fish again!”
On the other tentacle, she wasn’t shocked that anybody would want to leave the Valley for the city, for Inkopolis’s promises of a better life. She glances back up, her fingers worrying the club of her tentacle. “I don’t think they’d be mad at you. You both thought you were doing the right thing.”
“I see... Perhaps my opinion is clouded by negative memories and the fact that I grew up there,” Manami guessed. “You always want what you can’t have, right?” She sighed, brushing her tentacles out of her face. “The way I see it... I don’t really like to sympathize with Octavio, but he thought he was doing what was best for the Octarians -- for my people. You could say his hearts were in the right place. However, stealing from others is never permissible, no matter the circumstances. He definitely shouldn’t have done it the first time, let alone repeatedly.” “I guess it’s less of a matter of if they will forgive me and more of if I’ll forgive myself,” she explained. “I wish I could go back in time and fix all of my mistakes, but since that’s not possible, I will simply have to atone for them.”

When about to meet a fan, the magenta idol never recalled feeling such a tightening of knots in her stomach. No, usually it was the fan who was nervous! Perhaps it was because this was a special case and that she didn’t have Marie to play off of in some banter.
Legs dangled idly as she sat in her normal spot by the rundown shack. Things were quiet for the globe containing a certain octarian had been moved back to Octo Valley and her cousin Golden hues were fixed on the blue sky above as she learned to appreciate it a bit more in recent times. Tentakeel Outpost had become like a second home these days since her gramps and agent 3 went back on another mission to who knows where. A sigh left her lips. Callie knew the octoling would be here any minute and she silently went over the facts in her head. They were saved by the incantation and had been through so much since. Gramps had filled her in on all the details.
Ears perked and eyes darted as she heard footsteps. Lips spread into a wide smile as she stood to greet the octoling. “Hi there!” The idol waved, easily making herself look far more cheerful than she felt. “You go by Manami, right? I’m Callie! It’s so awesome to finally meet you!” She extended a hand, grinning. “This place wasn’t too hard to find, right? I know gramps isn’t that good with directions all the time.”
Manami was internally fangirling like there was no tomorrow: ‘OH MY COD. IT’S REALLY HER. IT’S CALLIE!!! I love her so much, I think I’m gonna faint --’ Luckily for her, she was able to maintain her composure on the outside. After the idol introduced herself (’OH MY COD SHE KNOWS MY NAME’), she shook the Inkling’s hand (’I CAN DIE HAPPY NOW’). “It’s wonderful to meet you at last, though it feels like I already know you very well,” she said, grinning. “It wasn’t too hard to find, thankfully.” The Octoling looked around, realizing where she was. “Well, this place is certainly nostalgic...” She immediately squelched those thoughts, though. This was a happy time, she was meeting with one of her idols; she wasn’t going to let her past life get in the way of her enjoying this moment. “Gramps is... Cap’n Cuttlefish?” she asked, recalling the elderly Inkling who had been trapped with her in the Deepsea Metro. “Are you also a member of the New Squidbeak Splatoon?”

“Well of course, that is my name.” The commander answered, shockingly nicely. There was absolutely no hostility behind his voice, in fact, he was about to greet her as a stranger, but then she asked him if he remembered anything. Indeed, he did not. There was nothing in his memory banks. “Um.. no, I do not. I’m sorry, I just woke up today and I’m not sure what happened.”Whatever it was left him feeling very disoriented. His head hurt slightly, but other than that he felt fine physically. Everything was running smoothly, nothing was damaged, but he still felt strange.
“I’m sorry, I do not know who this Agent 8 is. Who are they? Are they famous here? A celebrity perhaps?” His tone became positive again as he spoke. “I know I was one for a bit. Ah, those were good times.”
“Oh... I see.” ‘Should I tell him?’ Manami thought to herself. ‘...Nah. I’ll spare that heart attack, or whatever the robot equivalent would be, for another time.’ Despite his attempt to destroy the world, the Commander deserved a second chance. After all, she had likely done just as much damage while in the Octarian Army, yet she got one. “Uh, no... It’s just... An old nickname of mine. I thought you might be someone I knew a while ago, but apparently not,” she fibbed. “It’s nice to meet you, Tartar. I’m Manami.” “I’m assuming you don’t know your way around Inkopolis Square... Would you like me to give you the grand tour?”

The amount of confusion coming from the once malevolent telephone-headed AI would normally be concerning, but he found nothing wrong with him. Everything was going smoothly, with him at least, everything was broken around him when he woke up though. He couldn’t remember how or why this was, but he didn’t dwell on it much. The Commander simply got up and traveled to the surface to see what new civilization there was. The area looked absolutely foreign to him and he seemed to have no memory at all of the place, he didn’t even recognize those who had escaped him.
The robot became considerably concerned when people, mostly Octolings, started pointing him out and ushering themselves and their friends away. He assumed it must be that they’ve never seen something such as him. His memory was gone, and it was perfectly evident as soon as he began to speak to the frightened crowd.
“Please. There is no need for fear, I do not wish to harm your kind! I understand many, if not all of you will not know what I am, but I can assure you that I come to you all as an Ally! My name is Commander Tartar, CEO of Kamabo Co. and supreme artificial intelligence. I was tasked with passing Humanity’s knowledge onto the next intelligent lifeforms, and you appear to be just that!”
There were only a handful of souls who knew about the events that transpired in the Deepsea Metro. Three such cephalopods were sitting at a table in Inkopolis Square eating lunch -- a rare occurrence, considering two of them were the members of the ultra-popular band Off the Hook in disguise. Unfortunately, this was the exact time a certain genocidal telephone made his reappearance. “WHAT!?” Manami, Marina, and Pearl squawked in unison. Was it possible for a robot to lose its memory? Manami had no clue. It certainly seemed he was telling the truth -- he was not glitching with [ERROR]s or [SLANG_NOT_FOUND]s like he did when he told her about the "promised land." Could she learn to trust him? Possibly. Did she trust him now? Shell no. The physical and mental scars the Metro left on her were healing at a snail's pace. The Octoling once known as Agent 8 quickly escorted the incognito idols back to their studio before cautiously approaching the Commander alone. How ironic it would be if he lost his memory and came out of the Metro, while she lost her memory going into it...
“Excuse me, Tartar, if I may call you that... Do you remember anything from the past few months? Does the name 'Agent 8' ring a bell?" Manami tried her best to hide her hostility, but her tone was more accusatory than intended.
