Particularly observed during the nine-hundred year period of the Warring States Era after the fracturing of the Ootsutsuki Empire is the distinct, cloistered and reclusive mentality of the many clans and factions of shinobi, samurai and noble families. This is particularly notorious among shinobi clans, and strongly observed with bloodline clans, such as the Senju, Uchiha, Kaguya, Hyuuga and others.
The usual norm was that clan loyalty was absolute. During the WSE, the basic unit of society was the family, and the family made up the clan. By extension and analogy, therefore, the family is the clan, and vice versa. The clan ensured protection, survival and sustenance; the clan was the cradle of life and education and the very foundation of the society. The individual owed its existence to the family, and without the family, the individual amounted for nothing.
People - adults and children, were supposed to put clan above all else. Treason and high treason were punishable by execution. Loyalty during the WSE was so highly valued more than human life itself, that clan leaders - and sometimes, own parents - executed their own children if they disobeyed this basic tenet of society.
While clans were known to form loose alliances (normally called affiliations), there was some clearly discernible distance between the two groups. Inter-marriages were normally allowed with non-bloodline clans, but bloodline clans tended to distrust even their own allies, weighing in on their obsession with blood ties and blood purity. Outsiders brought into the clan by marriage usually had difficult times adjusting to this mentality; support groups were normally beyond their reach, as clan members tended to view outsiders as still complete strangers despite this fact of marriage.
Worse, the bias extended to offsprings of such marriages. It was common practice to disinherit or remove successional rights from children of ‘outsiders’, and inheritance was usually diverted off to ‘qualified’ and thorough clan children. Exceptions to such practices were very rare and few and far between.
Half-blood children of bloodline clans, whose kekkei genkai were more often than not diluted through no fault of their own, were seen as sub-par members of the family. The Uchiha and Hyuuga were particularly notorious with half-blood children. During the WSE, half-bloods were usually given less work, or given leftover missions with lower income rates.
