Inaccuracies in historical romance bother me more than they should but also why do your medieval European characters know what a maraca is when they weren’t introduced to Europe until the 16th century

“the black god’s drums” by p djèlí clark is a charming little novella that I would call “creole steampunk.” it’s set in the walled city of free new orleans in a world where the American civil war ended in an armistice but Haiti and Trinidad are world powers. the main character is a black street thief touched by the goddess oya who enlists a queer black airship captain to help untangle a plot. she’s a kid and the captain is an adult so there’s no romance between them, it’s just this kid trying to impress a cool older woman. it’s only about 100 pages and it’s a fun read
Just finished chapter 11 of A Tyranny of Queens and I totally thought Leoden was still super evil despite being charming but now I’m not so sure… the way he talked about Amenet and Tevet does not sound like he wanted to kill them.
rip william laurence you would’ve loved don’t ask don’t tell
ive only had Galen for one chapter, but if anything happens to him ill kill everyone in this room and then myself
rereading the whole series, I'm on Victory of Eagles at the moment. the level of laurence's self alienation and the violence of the whiplash that comes when tharkay "laurence what are you doing"-s him is insane. like laurence is in killing machine mode, not even paying attention to temeraire (!!!); tenzing deus ex machina tharkay flies into camp in the early days of march, goes "i would prefer not to" at laurence's order, adds on a "laurence what are you doing", and our iceman literally starts bawling right then and there. cries for ten minutes, has a crisis at tharkay's own way of life, and goes out at once to apologise to his dragon. insane. the kind of emotional rollercoaster that would have me in bed for three days straight.
Another sharp blow, at his right arm: he blocked it as well, but this time five inches of steel did indeed snap off, scoring a thin line across his jaw before it tumbled away, red-gold in the reflected firelight.
if the sky on fire got too popular there would be people in the fandom arguing that since sicaryon calls anahrod his sword sister shipping them is like incest
As a part of my draw ALL the InCryptid family members, I also drew Aunt Rose AKA Rose Marshall, the Phantom Prom Date, or The Girl at the Diner.
I'm on page sixteen of Rendezvous with Rama and so far the text has directly claimed three times that there is no possibility of a rendezvous with Rama. I have a sneaking suspicion that it might be incorrect.
