Our map-system upgrade is going very nicely. You can now import projects into the map and see where they take place. Very useful stuff we hope!
the world-building framework includes a quick-start system, that helps you plan out exactly what kind of world you’re building, and how the engine should view it, interact with it, and make decisions about it.
Luckily, with the Wiki-Page plugin installed, your team and fans can get a descriptive essay version of this list to drool over!
The base of all knowledge
While perhaps we should have been sleeping, playing sports or not making stupid bets with housemates on the Packers Seahawks game, our weekend was spent creating a fancy-pants new knowledgebase plugin for our system.
TeriYeri infisyns can now install this and populate it with loads of questions they think their customers will be asking. Not a new idea by any stretch of the imagination, but something we felt was sorely lacking within the framework.
We hope it makes communicating with your customers and users that much easier.
Enjy!
.mobi arrives
We’ve been grappling all day with the .mobi ebook format and we’re happy to say we absolutely hate it! Nonetheless, with a 60% market share of the ebook industry (maybe more) Amazon Kindle needs at least .mobi (if not KF8), so we’ve got it working.
If you’re running one of our infisyns you’ll soon be able to offer your customers the opportunity to download/email their purchases in .mobi format as well as .epub (2 & 3).
With the huge array of conversion tools available out there both online and off, we’re not going to be pushing hard to improve the appearance and styling of the .mobi versions of downloads, but they are nonetheless available.

That aside, it’s probably time for a break. We’d like to plug a new guy on our radar, Jeffrey W Ingram, and his awesome new podcast series: “World Builder’s Anvil”. He’s getting to grips with the concept of worldbuilding in bitesized portions which are great for morning bus rides, or lunch breaks. Enjoy!
Engine v1.0.7 In Production Environment
Our first infisyn (Caladria), is now using TeriYeri engine v1.0.7! Some new developments include the following:
eCommerce Store
That’s right, the system comes with its very own commerce store, primed for the sale of digitial goods (but capable of handling physical items as well). This comes with a built-in PayPal integration so you can sell your eBooks directly from your site.
Accounting System
A very basic accounting system makes its appearance. Team members all receive a site bank account, which the system makes deposits and withdrawals from when sales or refunds happen in the store.
Users can then request a withdrawal themselves, and the system (after confirmation from Admins) will automatically pay into their paypal account.
Library
Sales in the store don’t just automatically send your customer an eBook (that’s so 90s!). We store (no pun intended) a copy of the store product in the library for the customer, and allow them to download when they want and in which format they want. Not only that, but it’s tailored to them personally!
Want more? Ok, how about being able to read the books on-site using our special eBook reading platform, which hooks into the WikiPages & Mapping System to give a truly immersive interaction. Why not right. So we are throwing that into the next big update!
Other Fixes & Bugs
A new Followers plugin has appeared, allowing users to follow each other. The results of which now appear in the follower’s activity stream a la social media sites.
Your authors can now start to feel proud of their followings on your site. It could certainly help boost sales of products they are involved in, and gives them a huge bonus on their CV if looking to work on other TY-managed sites as well.
There’s a whole changelog of stuff that’s gone into v1.0.7, but that’s boring tech stuff. Needless to say, this version is the most modern, powerful and flexible out there.
Roll on v1.0.8!

Now you can upload cover-art easily
Cover-Images Arrive
That's right folks, you can now upload beautiful cover-art for your eBooks with our system and we'll plonk it straight in when you hit publish. We've added a fancy cropper tool as well to make sure you get it styled to the best size for all eBook formats.
We'll also be looking into designing an easy to use template builder (similar to what Amazon KDP offer) to help you design some cover-art if you've not already got something chosen.
One more step to making your life easier. We hope you like it.
The new dashboard for our Writing App
Writing App Released!
Good Morning!
We're very happy to announce today that our Story Writing and publishing app is now in public use on our site. It's a completely free service with no restrictions at the moment.
The app is designed with story-writing in mind. It offers a range of useful features to help you organise your story, and boost your creativity.
Plot-Builder
We've included a nice and easy to use plot-builder for you. Add, edit and delete plot points as you go and reorganise them with our nifty drag & drop system.
Scene-Builder
Our scene-builder is where the magic happens. Add as many scenes to your story as you like and organise them conveniently with drag and drop to get the perfect order.
Include extra details such as the time of day and get some useful feedback about your scene's setting.
With useful word counters, and other useful statistics on the way we're certain you'll find it easier to write with us.
Publishing
Oh yeah, we almost forgot! When you're finished writing your story you can publish it. How does that work? Simply click the publish button (go through a few checks from our system to make sure you're ready) and it's all done in the blink of an eye.
You've got yourself a fully formatted and downloadable eBook (ePub 2.0.1) that you can do whatever you want with.
What Else Can I Get Out Of My World?
You’ll remember we mentioned earlier that your World is the equivalent of a Wordpress blog, and we’ve carefully considered what you need to help grow this new venture of yours. We’ll be talking a little bit about franchises later, but for now let’s talk about your fans, the lifeblood of any successful author. Without fans, selling books is a tough job.
Ask yourself now, what do your fans really want? Yes they want to read the novels and short-stories that you produce about your world, but quite often that just doesn’t fill their boots. They want more, they want to learn more about these amazing characters you’ve created, and read about the great tsunami that washed a metropolis off the map, or the famous battle that brought about the collapse of the mighty empire. They want to run away from the real world and get lost in this captivating one you’ve created for them (and you should want this too!).
So how do we manage all of this? Simple, we allow them to “subscribe” (Twitter - follow, Facebook - like) to your World so they too can access the Wiki-Pages and Interactive Map. We’ve even given you your very own Message Forum, unique to your World, where you can communicate and discuss things with your fans and get feedback if you want it.
In short, you get your very own community to manage, where your fans can delve into the depths of your World and learn all about the mysteries and other goodies you’ve created. Just like on Twitter or Facebook, you’re building your following.
How Does It Work?
World-building is where we should start. Part of your dedicated database is reserved for storing data about your world. There are a few different types of data, but that’s for another time. As part of the front-end of your World you have what we call the Building Zone. This section is for adding, editing and sometimes deleting data about your world. You build your world from here. The Building Zone is designed to make it simple and efficient to add data to your world as and when you like. The TYWE is utilised here to help you make intelligent additions (and changes) to avoid inconsistencies and anomalies. Chances are this is where you’ll spend much of your time.
Reading data from your World’s database might sound like the kind of thing you certainly don’t want to be doing. We’ve designed a couple of extra features to make this easier and more interesting for you (and your fans…); these are our built-in Wiki-Pages feature and our Interactive Map feature. Let’s have a look at those now.
The Wiki-Pages feature gives you the ability to read the data in your database in the style of a Wikipedia article. The TYWE intelligently reads your World’s database and auto-generates a Wikipedia-style article for you. In plain English, your World gets its very own Wikipedia, but you don’t have to write a single word on a single page or ever have to make an update directly to it. Any changes or additions you make in the Building Zone are automatically handled by the TYWE when a Wiki-Page is opened. Neat right?! This feature is great for you to remind yourself about a character, culture or country without having to read an endless list of database tables and rows. (It’s also a great feature for your fans…)
The Interactive Map feature is the first instance of visual stimulation for your world. It could be considered similar to Campaign Cartographer in that you do use it to plot out the coordinates for some data-types (regions, settlements islands etc.), but there is far more to it than that. Just as the Wiki-Pages feature uses the TYWE to read your World’s database and output a nicely written article about a character or a famous battle, the Interactive Map feature does exactly the same but in a visual way. An example of this; you could tell map to load up the lifeline of a character, and it would walk you around the map (in real-time) pointing out the major events for the character (in terms of location). As an author, knowing where your characters are at a certain point in time is crucial to the continuity in your novel. Once again, your fans can also benefit from this by being able to find on the map the many settlements, rivers and regions you’ve created to help them get a sense of perspective when reading your novels.
All of these features we’ve mentioned are geared towards helping you build the world you will write your novels about, but there’s one more point we’d like to make about this before we continue.
You might be thinking in black and white when it comes to your novel and the world it’s set in. By this we mean there is fixed point in your In World Time, where your “backstory” stops and your novel begins. Your theory is that the novel continues the story of the world, with anything before that being “history” and anything after that being the murky depths of the future. We understand this point of view, but we’ve designed the TYWE slightly differently.
Your World actually has its own timeline, and time is an important component when adding data. Take a moment and think about the following questions:
How many prequels/sequels are you planning to write after this first novel?
How much of the world you’re creating is mentioned in the novel, and what’s going on in the other parts?
What about the idea of writing a new series set 1,000 years before/after the time of your current novel?
When you start to ask yourself these questions, you start to get an idea of In World Time. This first novel you’re planning to write might be set in the year 3245, so what’s happened for the first 3 millenia? A year down the line you might decide you’ve had enough of this series, and you want to start a new one in the same world but in a completely different part of it in the year 1297.
The TYWE is designed to accommodate this very situation. When you use our writing/publishing framework (more on that later) you’ll be asked to specify the In World Dates when your novel begins and finishes. We’ve designed it like this to make life easier for you in the long-run. The way we see things, this might be the first novel about your World, but 10 years down the line you might have published 20 novels, and a bucketload of short-stories, and you’ll want to make sure there is proper continuity throughout all of them.
What Is A TeriYeri World & Why Do I Want One
The easiest way to get to grips with what TeriYeri is and what TeriYeri worlds are is a simple comparison. Here are some examples for you:
TeriYeri
Wordpress.com
Website Hosting Provider
TeriYeri World
Wordpress.com Blog
Facebook Page
A Hosted Website
TeriYeri is a service provider. We offer hosting space on our system in which you can deploy and run the TeriYeri World Engine (TYWE).
What Comes With A TeriYeri World?
Behind the scenes a TeriYeri World is a dedicated database, running on our servers, that seamlessly plugs into our system and harnesses the TYWE. The internal mechanics are simple and straightforward as we are big advocates of keeping things simple as much as possible.
On the front side you get a fully functional website (within our own) that is specifically designed to utilise the TYWE. This comes with a number of different features/plugins already built-in to make things easier for you. We’ll come to those a bit later. Looking at the comparisons above you can see that a TeriYeri World is equivalent to an individual blog hosted by Wordpress.com.
Why Do I Want A TeriYeri World?
At the beginning you’ll probably be interested in TeriYeri because you’re an author or aspiring author and you have an idea for a novel. You might have already started it, but at some point you’ve decided that you need some structured backstory to keep everything organised. The fictional world your story is taking place in is starting to grow and the Word Document, or notebook just isn’t cutting it. You might have looked at Wiki-style software as a way of keeping tabs on information, but you’re a bit tired of endless updates across multiple pages amongst other limitations.
If you’re in this position then TeriYeri is just what you’re looking for.
Look out for our next blog post tomorrow...
Engine Generation At Its Finest
Wow, a big upgrade on the way which we're just at the point of fine-tuning is our clusters system. It's part of The Studio and will allow you to generate content for your worlds in all manner of ways. Right now we're working on a simple cluster template that will plonk a Nuclear Family (2 parents + kids) in for you filled to the brim with data that you can tweak as you like to get your desired content.
The big news besides the clusters system is that they are in fact a part of the much larger TeriYeri engine which is starting to take shape. By this we mean the intelligent side of things. We've added another small system within the engine called hooks. We are able to design any kind of hook we like and they are used at runtime when a cluster (or upcoming scenario) template is filled with data by the engine and about to be sent back to you. We won't go into too much detail about hooks right now but here is a simple example of one:
When the engine generates a character for you it will run a hook called setCharacterNameFromParents. The engine will just generate a name for you, but this hook will look for any parents of the character and adjust the name to match. Sons of Joe Bloggs will no longer be called Smith, Allen or Davids, this hook will make sure they're named Bloggs!
We're really excited about this part of TeriYeri's development and we'll be bringing you more news in the upcoming weeks. We're expecting to have our clusters and scenarios system finished and in place on our production site by the end of the month, so lots of work to do!
What Is TeriYeri
If you've been wondering this since you came into contact with us you'll be interested in our new FAQ & Guide system. This is something that we've been planning for quite some time and will help you get to grips with what TeriYeri can offer you and how to get the best out of it for your own needs.
We'll be adding FAQs and Guides steadily over the coming months so do check back now and then.
The Studio In Action
Just to let you know we've opened The Studio and are now allowing members to create models and save them in the system. You can import your models (or those of others which are Free To Use) by clicking on the 'Import Model' button on the 'Metadata' tab when creating objects.
At the moment only Culture objects can have models so you won't see the button unless you're designing a Culture. :)
More news on the way about Clusters & Scenarios coming from The Studio, which will make creating content far simpler (grouped creation instead of individual).
