A Farewell to Terrapn

We have so enjoyed building a platform that helps amazing food lovers, like you, visualize and share your favorite places. After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to say goodbye to Terrapn. Terrapn will be shutting down on June 15, 2015. Until then, community members who already have accounts will have full access to your profile and to Terrapn. We will no longer be supporting new registrations. We hope you'll find another community that gives beautiful food the beautiful maps they deserve. In the meantime, please email us at [email protected] for anything we can do to help in this transition (existing community members should have received a CSV export of all their collection data). Before June 15, you may want to email individual collections to yourself, using the "Share" button that you’ll see when viewing that collection on Terrapn. The email will contain all of that collection's information (address, notes, links to reviews) in an easily shareable format.  Thank you for joining us on this incredible journey. The Terrapn Team

Pints at Jingletown Jazz Room and empanada extravaganza!

We're excited for the next Travel Massive Oakland event at Jingletown Jazz Room on Tuesday, May 12th! 

Jingletown Jazz Room is the largest brewery in Oakland, they utilize non-conventional, high quality ingredients they have a strong tradition of supporting local artists, musicians, food vendors in their welcoming and under the radar super cool space. 

There will be delicious brews, an empanada truck, and plenty of food and travel aficionados. We’ll even have a prize raffle giveaway!

When: Tuesday, May 12, 2015, from 5:30 pm to 7:15 pm

Where: Jingletown Jazz Room, 3096 E 10th St, Oakland, CA 94601 To get there from the Fruitvale bart station: exit the station and continue walking straight, toward the large 4 story parking garage. Continue past the parking garage to the crosswalk which crosses Fruitvale Blvd at E. 12th. You will cross the street towards a large parking lot and the Guadalajara restaurant and taco truck. E.10th is just to the left and the other side of Guadalajara, turn right on e.10th and walk a few hundred yards!

Tartine & Blue Bottle Merge and Head to New York, Tokyo, and LA

We woke up to big food news this morning! San Francisco’s beloved Tartine Bakery has merged with local artisan coffee juggernaut, Blue Bottle Coffee. This, in itself, is big news - but the collaborative team is expanding to new locations in New York City, Tokyo, and Los Angeles over the next year.

Blue Bottle has been able to maintain its personality as it has expanded, so we hope the same will hold true for Tartine. Our community has a lot of love for both institutions: Tartine Bakery is one of the most popular places on Terrapn, with Blue Bottle Coffee a hot spot, as well. 

While change is both scary and exciting, we know one thing is for sure: if we can get our hands on a Tartine morning bun while wandering the streets of New York, you won’t see us complaining.

Chocolate, chocolate, everywhere...

That's right, it's SF Chocolate Week and we couldn't be happier to hear this news. The event is hosted by TasteTV and kicks off today, March 6th, in San Francisco. 

So what happens, exactly, during a week all about chocolate? According to their website, TasteTV's SF Chocolate Week is "a weeklong celebration of cocoa creations, desserts, drinks, chocolates and confections across the San Francisco Bay Area. 10 Days of Chocolate!" Well, we won't argue with that. Sign us up!

Tommy has quite the appetite - for both discovering new places and for food - so he accidentally ate the “i” in our url, leaving us with terrapn.com. As fellow foodies, we've all "accidentally" eaten something we didn't mean to, so we didn't get too upset when we found out.

Hour of Code at the Apple Store San Francisco

Last week, our team was invited to give a talk at the flagship Apple Store in San Francisco, as part of Apple's participation in Hour of Code.

To keep in theme with the event, we shared how our founding team came to web development from opposite ends of the spectrum (one, an engineer who did artificial intelligence work for NASA, the other a creative writing major who once worked at a comedy club) - and yet were both trained to "think lazy," which comes in handy when you're learning to code.

Our First Foodie Map Making Party

We had such a great time with everyone who participated in our first-ever Map Making Party!

We invited foodies and travelers to brave the San Francisco rain and gather at our new office at NextSpace Union Square to create collections of places they love, with www.terrapn.com (formerly OneDay.io). 

Five lucky mappers won prizes through our raffle contest. Explore the winning collections:

Amit won for his favorite tennis courts in San Francisco by adding places with our custom drag-and-drop feature

Charity won a prize for her collection of Hole in the Wall places to visit in Hawaii

Ramzi won TWO prizes (he made a lot of maps!) with his Mexican cuisine collection and his tour of treats in San Francisco

Sonic Highways Visits the City of Angels

Los Angeles is a transient town, but has attracted the best of the best, at one point or another, given its influence in the music industry. Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters doesn’t hide his lack of connection to Los Angeles in the episode, so it’s fitting that he whisks us away to the desert, after a brief tour of the musical history of LA, which is actually quite rich.

Grohl spends most of the episode at Rancho de la Luna Recording Studio. The space has a personal meaning for him: Grohl came here for respite on his one day off from cutting the second Foo Fighters album.

Many Californians have a love/hate relationship with its largest sprawling metropolis, but no one can argue its importance in the music world, from the iconic KROQ rock music radio station, to history music clubs like the Roxy and the Whiskey a Go Go.

Sonic Highways Takes Us Beyond Austin’s City Limits

Episode four in the HBO documentary series, Sonic Highways, takes us to Austin, where Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters give us a tour of the city’s rich musical history. Among the spots explored are the original site of Austin City Limits, the now-closed Armadillo World Headquarters, and the Skyline Club, where Hank Williams held his last performance (the Skyline also hosted another music icon on its stage – Elvis Presley – long before anyone knew his name).

We begin with Willie Nelson, who found his musical stride in Texas, and his first ever “Fourth of July Picnic.” The outdoor music festival preceded the more famous modern events, like Coachella, and still runs every year. Willie Nelson is featured through much of the episode, in large part due to his incredible legacy, impacting not only Texas, but the entire world of country and rock music.

The episode also takes us to the famed Austin City Limits television show, unlocking the original recording space: Studio 6A on the University of Texas, Austin campus. The incredible list of musicians  who played Austin City Limits in this room is difficult to wrap your head around: from classic legends like Buddy Guy, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Ray Charles, Neil Young, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to more modern acts like The Black Keys, The Foo Fighters, Neko Case, and Sonic Youth (okay, Sonic Youth is somewhere in between).

Next Stop on the Sonic Highway: Nashville, Tennessee

It’s all about the song. – Dolly Parton, Sonic Highways.

The third episode of HBO’s Sonic Highways takes us to Nashville, Tennessee.

Nashville is known as the world’s country music capital and with good reason – it’s played an enormous role in bringing most of the legends of American and country music to fame, from Johnny Cash to Elvis Presley, to modern stars, like Carrie Underwood.

The Nashville story begins with Dave Grohl playing an acoustic show at the Bluebird Cafe, a renowned singer/songwriter venue where locals come to hear up-and-comers and well known acts, alike. Expected spots like the Ryman Auditorium (home to the Grand Ole Opry) are featured, as well as some lesser known gems, like Southern Ground Studio, a historic recording space. With interviews from the likes of Dolly Parton, Zac Brown, and Steve Earle (which some of you may better know as Walon), who tell us of the tales that happened in this music city, the episode makes you want to book the next flight out to Nashville, as soon as possible.

Sonic Highways – the Journey Begins with Chicago

This Fall, Dave Grohl’s much anticipated musical documentary, Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways, debuted on HBO. The eight-part series tells the musical story of different cities and started with none other than Chicago, one of our own featured cities on OneDay.

Music is a beautiful story-telling tool and Grohl is off to a great start with this project. Rolling Stone Magazine

So, we made the first of our own series: Map of Chicago – Something from Nothing.
