Marguerite looks briefly from Tessie to the dance floor, for once pondering if the girl may be right. It’s a fleeting thought, however, and it’s gone as soon as it comes to her.

“The customers, petit chien, are here for one thing and one thing only. To drink. And that is what we provide- that is what you are here to provide. ”

With a small huff, she slides onto a bar stool, nearly in the way of where Tessie is cleaning, and stares coldly at the girl.

“Theresa, how do you expect to be trusted with larger work, if you cannot even be trusted to remain here?”

Tessie looks up from the bar quickly.

“But… but they come for the band too! And to dance! And there ain’t always enough dames for all the fellas…”

The young werewolf frowns when Marguerite sits, right in the way and too close for comfort. She huffs and moves down the bar, her shoulders hunching at her employers admonishment.

“I… I’d be better at that! I ain’t made for bein’ cooped up n’ servin’ drinks!” Her voice is passionate and pleasing. “I’m fast, I can get places nobody else can, my teeth are sharp…”

Marguerite tsks at the girl, growing more and more irritated as she goes on.

“Yes, and those men left wanting often turn to drink, which is where you should come in.” She shakes her head, pinching the bridge of her nose. ”Theresa, need I really explain this to you? When we took you on, I had a hard time of convincing Aristide you were little more than a stupid dog- do try and prove me right.”

The girl’s insistence, however, at being allowed more responsibility, pulls a laugh from Marguerite. She rises and practically glides down to where Tessie has moved, and hovers over her. “Darling, if we had a need for more teeth, I would hire a dragon for the jobs. I require someone with subtly and occasionally business savvy- neither are traits you posses.” A devilish smile spreads over her face, as if she’s just thought up a delicious scheme. “But if you are so certain you can handle the job- go to Aristide. He is in charge of the runs. See if he will reward your hard work with more responsibility, hmm?”

Well, well, well. Look who it is, sauntering right up to Miss d'Aubray, almost as if he HADN'T been ignoring her most of the day.

Marguerite frowns as he approaches her. As relieved as she is to see him, he has been ignoring her- a fact which doesn’t particularly sit well with her.

Her eyes meet his, and she looks at him expectantly.

"Theresa." From the sound of Marguerite's voice, she's rather perturbed at having to run around the club in search of the girl. "Where have you been? I've been looking for you."

Tessie gives a little jump and quickly turns around, nervously smoothing out her skirt.

“N-nowhere, ma’am.” She tries to flas a smile. “I mean, I was here…” It’s technically true. She’d been in the club, just out on the dance floor, and not serving drinks as she was supposed to be.

The smile is ill-received, and only causes Marguerite to frown down at her. The vampire sighs with exasperation. “Which is it, girl? Were you nowhere, or were you here? I rather doubt that you’ve learned to be in two places at once.”

She snaps at Tessie, gesturing for her to continue working.

“I know hospitality does not come quickly to your kind, but please remember that you are here for a reason other than making a mockery of yourself on the dance floor, oui?”

Tess wilts under that frown.

“N-no…” She stutters to a stop, casting her eyes to the floor. That comment about her kind raises her hackles a bit, and she hunches her shoulders, but quickly shuffles to the bar to grab a rag and start wiping down the counter dutifully.

“I’m not… they’re the modern dances, Ms d'Aubray.” She knows defending herself is probably useless, but the words come out anyway. “The customers like ‘em.”

Andy looks stunned, for a moment, when she turns on him. Pointed ears turn red as she delivers her chastisement, and he balls his hands into fists.

“I didn’t mean-”

He stops abruptly, scowling. It’s no use. Of course, she sides with the other vampire. She always does. 

“…yes, ma’am.”

Sure, he won’t speak poorly of his superiors. Out loud. When they’re around.

The edges of her mouth curl into a smile. For as much as she enjoys taking advantage of Andy’s pining for her, she enjoys riling him up nearly as much.

“Merveilleux.”

Reaching a hand up to Andy’s face, she reaches a hand lightly on his cheek.

“Be a darling and find him for me, oui? We have business to discuss.”

I have no such use for a talent such as that. Shapeshifting and glamours are cheap tactics used by weaker, less intimidating creatures to fool the general public into believing that there is little to them. It takes a truly enlightened and terrifying presence to achieve this without assistance.

Take the dogs-  does anyone truly believe Theresa to be threatening when not covered in fur?

There's a very distracted looking vampire headed Andy's way. "Andrew, darling."

He’s slouching in the doorway, picking at his nails with a pocketknife, but when he sees the vampire sweeping towards him, he quickly straightens up, tugging on the lapels of his suit jacket.

“…Ms. d'Aubray?”

The slouching and general slacking off on Andy’s part doesn’t go unnoticed by Marguerite, though she keeps it to herself- you never know when it’ll be beneficial to bring up.

“Darling tell me,” she practically floats around him, lightly touching a hand to his arm. “You haven’t seen Aristide, have you? I fear he may have wandered off.”

Andy’s eyes widen a bit as he watches her move around him, and his eyebrows shoot up when she touches his arm. Her question, though, makes him frown.

Oh. She’s looking for him.

“I uh, haven’t seen him. Not today.” He makes a face. “Maybe he’s out somewhere, sucking the blood out of rats.”

“Pity.”

Marguerite turns from him, to continue her search, but stops dead in her tracks as Andy makes the next comment. She rounds on him, anger in her eyes.

“I will not tolerate comments such as those, Andrew.” Her words are precise, as if chosen very carefully. “Do not make the mistake of forgetting that when you speak of Aristide, you speak of me as well. Besides,” she relaxes, just a little. “I know a professional, such as yourself would never stoop to talking poorly of your superiors.”

-Marguerite is in the middle of pouring over some rather irritating order forms when she is interrupted by the knock at the door. From behind the door, she can catch just the faintest hint of smoke and ash.

Ah yes, the dragon; she’d been expecting him.-

-She rises as Riley enters the room, watching his movements closely. He’s uncomfortable, clearly. Good. The more uncomfortable he is in the room with her, the better. Oddly enough, it puts her at ease and she can manage a small, but not entirely forced smile-

She did, yes. 

-Marguerite comes around to the front of the desk and leans lightly against it. She ushers to a nearby chair, bidding him to sit, and crosses her arms.-

And yes, I may have something resembling an employment offer for you. But first, I don’t believe I caught you name last we spoke.

*The dragon doesn’t budge, staring down the vampire as she rises and leans against the desk. Her entire being screams wrong to his brain, the way she holds her body, the way she speaks is reminiscent of a puppet—although that may only be because he can smell her for what she is. If he ignores the smell Riley could see how she could pass for human.*

I’ll stand, thanks. *Leans against the wall next to the door before he folds his arms.* Riley. O’Neil if yeh care about surnames but I don’t. I gotta ask wot yer…employment entails. Don’t wanna land myself in any serious trouble, yeh understand surely.

-She frowns at his insistence to stand and her nails dig slightly into the wood of the desk. He doesn't trust her, and truth be told, she doesn't trust him, but at very least he could conjure up some manners.-

Any trouble you might encounter is purely due to any... recklessness on your part, monsieur O'Neil.

As you might know, what we do here is very much illegal. And naturally, there are many places in the city that continue to secretly serve alcohol.

-Marguerite pushes herself off the desk and again goes around it, this time to retrieve a few papers from a pile in the corner. She flips through them, to ensure they are the correct ones and holds them out for Riley.-

My main competitor, rather- the one I am most concerned about, is a place called The Palace. -She scoffs.- The name is rather ridiculous, but they remain a popular location. What I am hiring you to do, is to spend your time there and observe the place.

*Riley opens the door slowly with a tense posture, shoulders back. He manages not to gag at the smell of the vampire he’s about to close himself in a room with, voluntarily, and instead smiles then closes the door.*

Evenin’. *He stays by the door, hand still on the knob and forces a smile that is strained at the corners. His fingers feel cold on the metal, colder than he’s used to feeling in this fucking weather.* Guessin’ yer little wolf reported back to yeh. Annnd she mentioned somethin’ about a job offer too?

-She waves him in, not moving from her position on the couch.-

I trust the bar-girl has revealed to you the responsibilities I’ve given her, correct?

*He nods, pushing the cart into the room and he quickly begins to place the plates on the table.  And he positively looks like he’s trying to swallow something particularly disgusting at Marguerite’s question.*

…Yes, I heard about it. 

*Mordecai purses his lips and exhales sharply.*

I know it’s not my place to question your motives, but why did you let her do this?  That dragon is nothing but trouble, just a few days ago he tried to eat one of our loan customers.

And I am almost sure that the moment Tess can’t handle him I will have to intervene. I doubt she is qualified to deal with a rampaging 25-foot-long dragon on her own.

*He uncovers the first dish.*

By the way, tonight’s entrée is grilled eels. I hope you find it to your liking.

-Marguerite watches in silence as Mordecai arranges platters on the table, awaiting an answer. As he expresses his concerns to her, she nods.-

In all honesty, I had rather hoped he would eat her and do us all a favor. Tessie has been and remains a liability; we all know this. I gave her the job in some- perhaps misguided, attempt to evoke some responsibility from her. I believe it's time she pulled her weight around here. But still if you do end up dealing with the dragon on her behalf... -She gives him a small smile- Be sure to inform him that he is allowed to eat her.

-She eyes the eel with interest. Luckily for her, Mordecai's penchant for cooking elaborate dishes with unusual ingredients is exactly up her alley, and she seldom consumes something that is to her displeasure.-

As for the dragon, I have a vested interest in something that is fully capable of eating customers. You'll have to forgive my unwillingness to say much more on the matter.

Shame. News of her death would have been far more pleasant.

-When Marguerite stands, Aristide replaces her on the couch, crossing his left leg over his right. And while he doesn’t like to hear it, she isn’t entirely wrong. There was a time where they would have come up with a scheme together. But times have changed. They have a business and a future to think about now. Frankly, they don’t have time to play games with new toys, despite what Marguerite seems to think.

Aristide simply shakes his head.-

I do not see this creature as an asset as much as I do a liability, and I’m insulted that you think that comes across as a lack of creativity. One of us needs to be cautious and make sure we don’t run this place into the ground.

So kill him. Give the meat to Mordecai, sell the blood for a steep price. Unless you have something better in mind.

-She turns on him, her eyes narrowing. The gall of him, to imply her carelessness in running the Dahlia. She approaches Aristide, her nails digging into the palms of her hands.-

You can imply a great deal of things about me, love- and I know you do- but do not, even for a second, imply that I am anything less than cautious in running the place. I am not the one who has been taking people. I at least have the decency to conceal our true nature around others- whereas you walk the halls practically parading the fact around.

-Marguerite stands over Aristide and leans over enough to grab hold of his tie, pulling him closer. She winds the extra fabric around her hand, in an attempt to keep him from pulling away and places her mouth by his ear, speaking very softly.-

One of us is cautious in running the Dahlia. It's a pity you still believe it's you.

She told him we could “help him”. She seems to think we could use the ally.

-He frowns and takes another sip, considering this. To his knowledge, he’d never met a dragon. It sounded like a made-up fantasy by a waitress desperate for a raise.-

The girl is untrustworthy. How could you send her, of all people, after one of our patrons? And by herself at that? I don’t see how you can take a word she says seriously. Especially if she is going to run around trying to make allies without speaking to us first.

But- on the off chance that she is telling the truth…

-A sigh, another sip, and then a shrug.-

Kill him.

 I sent her after him to observe him, that's all. I knew he wasn't human- I assumed at very least, if she was stupid enough to get caught, he might kill her and we would be rid of a wolf. 

-Marguerite stands, and walks to a window, throwing open the curtains to reveal the night sky. She wishes Aristide would have more faith in her, like he used to... but she supposes there's no point in wishing.-

Kill him. You don't suppose he could be useful to us? Mmm, darling, there was a time where you might have thought up some wonderfully devious scheme that didn't involve killing a perfectly useful asset. I fear you've lost your imagination.
