I haven’t been sixteen for a while now.
I would hope not since you got my daughter pregnant.
Terry. Terry Terry Terry. Do you even hear yourself talk?
I do. I have a lovely voice.
“It’s just getting started. That’s no way to start it.”
“It’s the perfect way to start it. I’d offer you some but...”
I’m of age? But it’s in the treehouse in Mexico.
“You’re always going to be sixteen to me. And that’s good to know.”
Are you going to share?
“Yeah, no, I don’t think that’s going to happen.”
Share?
“Maybe when you’re older. Or if you can tell me where your father moved his stash to.”
It’s rather early to be drinking.
“Daddy’s had a long day, sweetheart.”

"N-No. I’m not sure," she whispered as she squeezed her eyes shut to keep the tears at bay while making no move to increase the distance between them. Astoria tried to shy away from his touch, but it was proving impossible, as if there was some magnetic field between them she physically couldn’t resist even if she wanted to. And she didn’t, until she heard those three words.
She already knew how he felt about her, just as she was sure he knew how she felt about him. But hearing it made it all the more real, and all the more painful. Like it sealed the love they wouldn’t have for much longer. “Don’t,” she barely managed to get out, her voice cracking. Astoria’s hands found his wrists, as if she wanted to pull them off of her, but she released them a second later as she followed him down onto the bed and rested on top of him. “Don’t say that,” she whispered in between kisses, moving to cup his neck in her hands as her lips trailed down to his jaw, unable to help herself.
The tears began rolling once more, and she could taste the saltiness of them on his skin as they fell. Bringing her lips to his ear, she breathed, her tone desperate as if to beg, “Take it back. Please. Please take it back, Ter.” She needed him to take it back, for his own good. She entered this thing to protect him, and that was exactly what she was trying to do. She couldn’t erase his feelings for her, but she could try to make her impending death easier on him if they didn’t voice those feelings. It sounded stupid in her head, but it also made some odd sense, and if there was anything she could do to keep him alive and happy, she would do it, including biting back those words herself despite everything in her dying to tell him.
Terry's chest clenched and he closed his eyes. How could things be so messed up for them? How was this their life? It wasn't fair. None of it made any sense. Why hadn't anyone put an end to this before? They were all so young, merely children sent to the slaughter. This shouldn't have been their life. They were supposed to grow old together, to have kids and be in love. In another life, maybe they could have, but not now. She was crying again and it took every bit of strength that he had to not join her. At least things couldn't get worse, he thought briefly. Except they totally could. She could die in the games too, cutting their story short. No, Astoria was going to win and she was going to find happiness later on. Terry had to believe that.
"I can't take it back," he said quietly, struggling to keep from breaking. "You know I can't." When she let his wrists go he pulled her right to his chest. Terry wanted to be strong for her, to be able to unsay everything and just go into the games as another contestant, but it wasn't who he was. His throat felt like it was closing up and a stray tear managed to run down the side of his face. What else could he do? They couldn't run, they couldn't hide from this. Their fate had been decided back on Reaping Day. Terry wondered if other tributes had ever gone through this before and just never said anything. It couldn't be so rare, could it? Especially in the outer districts where people actually still had feelings.
He hummed softly, keeping her close to his chest. He just needed this, to have her so close. It was going to hurt when they were separated in the games, but he couldn't go on without having as much time with her as he could. Terry knew he was going to die, but he didn't want to die without having some time with Astoria. "I'm sorry I disappointed you. And I'm sorry we won't get more time together."

Astoria didn’t hear Terry enter the room after her. She didn’t know he was there until she felt his hand on her wrist, pulling her to face him. She averted his gaze and embraced him back, burying her face in his chest to muffle any sobs that slipped out. She was trying her best not to cry. She hated crying. It made her feel weak, like a child, even in this moment when she knew she had a perfectly good reason to cry. And besides, she didn’t want to cry in front of Terry. She didn’t want him to see how hysterical she actually was, even if she was sure he could feel it.
She allowed him to move her to the bed, still silent since her outburst. Astoria didn’t realize what it was Terry wanted, again, until he took his shirt off. She wanted it, too. She wanted to love him in the best way she knew how. But it wasn’t smart. The more they did this, the harder it would be on him. Maybe her too, if there was an afterlife like some people believed. Astoria for one had no opinion on what happened after death, but if there was something, she didn’t want to live an afterlife of pain until Terry died of old age and joined her.
"No," she whispered against his lips, but she didn’t mean it. Her own lips were moving against his in a way that betrayed what she said, as well as her hands which were running all over his skin. "We shouldn’t." She could feel a tear falling down her cheek now, but she was less focused on trying not to cry than she was on trying to stop herself. However, she was failing miserably. She was head over heels for him, hopelessly in love, and this could be their last chance to feel each other’s love in the most intimate way. But it was foolish, and Astoria was torn.
Terry slowed some when she said no, not wanting to push her. He loved her too much to force her into something. But he didn't pull back from her yet. "Are you sure?" he asked, burying his face in her neck. She was warm and he thought he felt a tear hit the back of his neck. Was she crying over him? She shouldn't, he thought. But he couldn't stop her and he knew it. He knew that he'd never be okay if he lost her. Terry had never loved anyone more than he had loved Astoria, and never would. He slid his hands up her back, pulling her closer to him. It was going to hurt, he knew that. Either way, they would be lost to each other soon, and it would hurt. Their whole world was coming to an end and he didn't want to have their last memories be of them fighting to survive another day. He wanted something for Astoria to remember.
"I love you," he murmured to her, kissing her cheeks and her lips and anywhere on her face that he could reach, not minding the stray tears. Terry moved backwards on their bed, bringing her with him. Maybe they weren't getting a life together and maybe they weren't going to be able to love each other for the rest of that life, but Terry knew that he loved her more than enough right now. So he kissed her again, putting everything that he felt into it, every good memory they'd shared since he'd found her drunk by the water. He wouldn't let himself think about the what if's tonight. How their life shouldn't have ended here in the Capitol for the world to see. Maybe Astoria wouldn't understand why he had to be the one to die, but Terry needed her to. A world without her wasn't right.
And to his credit, Terry hadn't planned to tell her he loved her tonight. It had just slipped out naturally. He was sure that she knew of course. How couldn't she? But knowing it and hearing it finally admitted in the intimate place that they were, were definitely two different things. Terry just hoped this wouldn't hurt her, although he had a feeling it might. Astoria was too beautiful to hurt. His hands were everywhere as he got lost in his thoughts, most of which centered on the girl in front of him. The great love and loss of his life. He lips ghosted over skin and he pulled her closer as he blinked his eyes furiously. He wouldn't cry right now about how they weren't going to make it. That could wait. Tonight was for something more important than that.
