In recent weeks, I have been thinking long and hard about the type of evening dining Brighton has become famous for, and what I would choose from the menu whenever I sit down to eat. In general, I select something different for the main course every time I go out, but when it comes to picking a starter I nearly always go for the soup. Whether it’s tomato and basil, spicy pumpkin, winter vegetable or even French onion, there is every chance that I would choose just that.

 Whether I’m in the very best place to eat in Sussex or the most mundane eatery in the whole of the county, I’m always happy if the meal begins with a hearty bowl of soup, plenty of salt and pepper and a generous helping of sourdough bread. Brighton Architects and Home Design

The first changes beyond the original four-street boundary of the villageoccured around 1771 when North Row (which was to be renamed Marlborough Place) was built to the west, and some tarred and cobble-fronted buildings survive there still.   At the same time, inns were becoming established as fashionable venues: the Castle (demolished) and the Old Ship both had "uncommonly large and expensive" assembly rooms for dancing and high-class socialising. The Castle's assembly rooms of 1754 were redesigned by John Crunden in 1776 in Classical style;[Note 1] in 1761 Robert Golden designed Palladian-style rooms for the Old Ship, later redecorated in a "[Robert] Adamish" style after Crunden's work at the Castle.[24][25] Robert Adam himself redesigned Marlborough House in 1786–87: with its elegant Neo-Palladian façade and "spatially arresting interior",[26] it has been called the finest house of its era in the city.[27]

The Prince Regent visited Brighton regularly from 1783 and soon wanted a house.[25] A building near the Castle Inn was found, and Henry Holland extended it in "a stilted Classical style" in 1786–87. The Royal Marine Pavilion, as it was called before its present name (the Royal Pavilion) was adopted, became increasingly important in the growing town as it became the centre of activities for the Prince and his entourage—and the focal point for his regularly changing architectural tastes. Holland revamped the building in 1801–04 in a Chinese style, and the French-inspired interior was changed as well. Meanwhile, William Porden added a "monumental" complex of stables (now the Brighton Dome complex) to the west in 1804–08, in an Indian style. James Wyatt and later John Nash were then commissioned to alter the building again; Nash's work, finished in 1823, gave the building its present opulent Indo-Saracenic Revival/Orientalist appearance.[26][28]

London’s New Theatre – A Towering Project

There is great excitement in and around London’s arts community at the moment with the announcement of the creation of a new theatre.  It will become the UK’s first major new playhouse to be constructed since the restored Globe opened its doors back in 1997, and it’s expected that the new kid on the block will help to consolidate the city’s reputation as a global powerhouse of live performing arts.

One of the more interesting aspects of the new establishment is that it won’t be located in the more traditional West End streets of Shaftesbury Avenue, Drury Lane or The Strand.  Instead, it will be located further east, overlooking the iconic Tower Bridge and form part of the ambitious One Tower Bridge project, a large development which will also include housing and commercial businesses.

The announcement of such a prestigious project for this part of town is another indication of a noticeable shift away from the West End. In recent times, the construction of the Canary Wharf office buildings and the Olympic Village in Stratford have both helped transform the eastern quarter of London into a hive of activity, and this will now extend to attracting theatre-goers as well.

Needless to say, this doesn’t mean there will be anything even approaching a decline in the traditional West End theatre experience. People will still flock to the historic playhouses that have been a magnet to arts lovers for decades, but it does mean that London will be offering a broader choice to audiences. Transport links for the area are excellent and a great range of hotels and restaurants in the area around Tower Bridge already exist, so the question could be asked - why hasn’t this been done already?

A Solid Foundation

Given the fact that the new venture is the creation of two former stalwarts of the National Theatre, Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr, there are great expectations within the arts community for this project. There will be some who hope that a theatre in a rather different part of town will find it easy to be a little more ‘out there’ with the productions undertaken, and perhaps push the boundaries in regard to artistic freedom. 

It can be safely assumed that a new theatre at One Tower Bridge will be able to enhance the audience experience in a way that older theatres are perhaps unable to do. More comfortable seating, greater leg room and better facilities will all make a major difference to theatre-goers in the coming years.

Of course, the creation of a new theatre isn’t just big news for audiences, it’s also important for actors, producers and directors. Given the fact that brand new state of the art facilities will be available, we can expect to see major names clamouring for an opportunity to work in a space that has been specially created to showcase their efforts.  So when the doors open for the first time in 2017, we can expect more than just a murmur of interest.

London – With The Arts at Its Heart 

Promoting the arts in all its forms is key to the success of London as a cultural capital, and a whole range of organisations carry out this work, not just the theatres and galleries themselves.  There are the training and educational establishments, such as the University of the Arts London (UAL) and the charitable foundations and trusts that harness the support and enthusiasm of groups and individuals who are committed to the success of the arts in the capital.  These include groups such as the Tate Foundation, and individuals such as Ian Taylor, Christina Chandris, Sasan Ghandehari, Yassmin Ghandehari and Viktor Vekelsberg.
