people calling chapter five orientalist without knowing what the word means is making me extremely mad. just say you think its cultural appropriation. orientalism is a very specific (if expansive) type of racism that is about the disambiguation of asian cultures, treating everywhere from west to east asia as a cultural monolith--as a group of aesthetics to pull from without considering each cultural group as individual identities with individual cultures. how in the world can you say chapter five is orientalist when it is clearly a love letter to japanese culture and media, which is something toby fox has been immersed in since he was a young child through video games and eventually his community through his success via undertale. its obviously not my place to say whether deltarune chap5 was good representation (as im west asian, not japanese,) but i dont think it was from a place of ill-inform

to add on: okay. so why the fuck is chap5 japanese as hell? well, like most things in deltarune, its to reinforce the story. chap5, and deltarune as a whole, is about nostalgia, both in universe and out of it, for chapter five, that manifests in asgore's shared passion with alphys for 'human' culture--and this is very important--a human culture that, atleast in undertale, is a fundamentally flawed representation of humanity. while its played for laughs, in deltarune, this becomes very interesting when it comes to the human flowers. they arent darkners: they werent effected by kris' will when they made the fountain. they only have their own will; that which was formed by their experiences as flowers and the life thats been made for them by their dark world. most importantly, they reflect the fact that kris' human culture is absent from hometown--whether that be genuine japanese representation, or another ethnicity. this is why all they have is surface level japanese cultural references. it all imported. this is why seth tells those bug darkners to do a racist ninja impression they dont want to do, why flowery jojo poses, theres inexplicable shinto architecture.

im gonna be really honest with you i think the nostalgia angle could oh so easily be played out in like.... literally ANY other form, that wasnt just a straight up commodification of a culture that toby fox, as much as he respects & learns it, Does Not Belong to. it doesnt matter if thats not how toby himself sees japanese culture, its the way it is being represented to the audience. i would love to enthusiastically say that toby is making commentary on how asgore is romanticizing the past, but i just dont think that if it was intended that way it was executed well.

especially with the preexisting themes in deltarune, i think toby could have been a thousand times more successful modelling the dark world after some kind of historic americana. the way that the american past is romanticised can both fall into the theme of failing to reflect certain types of people (in our world, persons of colour and othee marginalised groups) AND the queer themes of deltarune as a whole ("traditional values" comes to mind).

id also like to add that with the context of prior dark worlds taking on relatively fantastical settings, it is... kind of weird as fuck to just throw japan in there! it gives the vibe of a fantastical land of the Orient or some shit. like im just not fucking with it. let's do a beautiful grassy meadow, or something. i dont fucking know.

maybe it wasnt intentionally orientalist or commodifying but ultimately that is what the end result was. thats whats important.

actually ☝️ orientalism is NOT about lumping all asian cultures together, it's specifically about the manufactured conceptualization of asia as an "other" in relation to the west. as palestinian-american writer edward saïd says in the book where he coined the term, "Orientalism can be discussed and analyzed as the corporate institution for dealing with the Orient — dealing with it by making statements about it, authorizing views of it, describing it, by teaching it, settling it, ruling over it: in short, Orientalism as a Western style for dominating, restructuring, and having authority over the Orient" (3).

and in my opinion, this is exactly what toby fox does in ch5. there is no concrete reason for him to invoke japanese imagery, fashion, music styles, architecture, etc etc that is actually tied to the plot. none of the main characters of this chapter are explicitly japanese or even asian-coded in general. ch5 both fetishizes japanese aesthetics and fails to meaningfully engage with them. & regardless of intention, this message is communicated to the fans as well, reinforcing ideas they may already hold of asia as the "other". i really liked other parts of the chapter, but this aspect is orientalist, plain and simple.
