Final Model Description
My model encompasses principle elements of grasp, weight and balance in its final form. My initial idea for my model and how it would reinterpret the natural human grasping function came from the way people hold briefcases and how the weight of an object affects how it is held. I decided to create a form that could be easily held when the arm is in a comfortable and natural position. This position I found was when the arm is relaxed, straight down, along the side of the body. To make the model easy to hold I initially decided to create the model so that it was evenly balanced, with the centre of mass at the handle. This then processed into a form with a weight situated below the handle and a streamlined form allowing the model to fall and rotate into the right position for the grasp despite how it is picked up. I created my form through a variety of iterations. The handle I modelled in foam after first creating the shape I wanted in clay. The lower part of the model is also in foam and was developed after multiple foam iterations were tried. The curved form was developed to both follow the slight curve of a lowered arm and to also allow the model to swing around the handle (centre of rotation) easily. To create weight in the lower end of the model I cut a hole out of the foam which followed the pointed end of the form and filled it with clay. This clay is heavier than the foam used in the rest of the model and ensures that the form is held in the correct position.

Photos of my hand holding the model to show how the grip is affected by where the model is positioned. It is also difficult to hold the model any other way as the weight makes the model difficult to balance.

This new model idea works with only one weight situated below the handle. This weight position and how it hangs below the handle means that the form has only one way in which it can be held. If it is held in any other position the weight and curved shape pulls the model around until the form of the handle is in the correct position for the finger grip.
First model made of foam. This model has two parts on either side of the handle, a long extended part and a shorter bulkier part. Despite the differences in the shape of the parts added weight will counter-act these the model will remain balanced, with the point of balance being the handle. This model however did not work out so I decided to experiment with more ideas on paper before moving on.

Final Animation for DSDN 142 - Project 3 The poem was "The Chariot" by Emily Dickenson.
It is a poem about riding eternity in deaths carriage and so I chose to follow an animation path based upon seeing your life flash before your eyes as you pass away. The animation starts as though you have been picked up by death in his carriage. As he takes you to your death you submerge in on your subconscious and watch your life flash away before your eyes. I chose to portray this in a disorientating fashion, with images of people from baby until old age reconstructed with an outline forming code. These redrawn images give a spooky and disorientating view. The music I chose to accompany this animation is called 'A singular Perversion' by Kevin Macleod and is a haunting eerie sound, this adds to the spooky animation.
