Overview

The HIV/AIDS epidemic has dramatically improved over the last 30 years. Treatments and health care benefits are 100% available to anyone living with the disease. 

Starting in the 1980′s, the virus was not controlled and people were not provided with any help by the government. No one knew much about this virus, and to prevent it was completely unknowledgeable. Scientists and researchers got a better understanding and the government opened up more resources. To this day, the virus is controlled and gives patients the care they need.

2015-2016

New treatment guidelines reported that anyone living with HIV must be treated no matter how severe the case is. 

Zero cases of discrimination have been reported.

1982-1983

Led to believe the disease was spreading from Haiti. The disease was first realized it could be passed down through sexual contact when cases of young women were receiving it from their partners. 

Later in 1983, it was identified in all cases of how this disease could be transmitted and how it can be prevented in the future.

2013

UNAIDS reports that AIDS related deaths improved by dramatically fallen 30% since 2005.

Numbers are increasingly improving with lower death rates.

2000

President Clinton announces the launch of the Vaccine Initiative for developing vaccines against HIV, Malaria, and TB.

HIV/AIDS is a threat to national security.

Clinton develops treatments for other countries around the world.

1996

Number of AIDS cases declines, works history for the epidemic.

No longer the leading cause of death in the United States.

Aids becomes the leading cause of deaths in Americans. 

President Clinton holds a national HIV testing day.

First HIV/AIDS movie to come out in theaters. Famous Hollywood movie on AIDS.

The red ribbon became an international symbol of AIDS awareness. Created a symbol for those who are living with HIV/AIDS.

1990

Ryan White dies from AIDS. 

June: Immigration policy stopped people who had HIV from entering the United States. 

July: discrimination against anyone with a disability including anyone with HIV

1987

Washington DC. protects started against the raging epidemic about lack of political leadership.

June 5, 1981

First report of AIDS in Los Angeles among a group of young gay men.

1983

June, 1983, children became positive with HIV, and it was hinted that it could be spread through their mothers if they were positive for HIV before birth.  

From this time, 1983, it was becoming a problem from hearing about many cases of transmission.

1980s

Losing thousands of lives, people wanted to find a cure for this disease. 

The government did not take it seriously and made treatments impossible to get. Small cases about gay men in Southern California reported the cause of the spread of the virus could only be between sexual contact.
