Tess Roby : IN VIEW 9.02.2017 - 18.03.2017
Opening: Thursday February 9, 6 to 8 p.m.
Traces of travels, Roby's photographs have the colours you wish the everyday had - deep blues and lush greens, hazy yellows and the red of potted geraniums. Exclusively shot on 35mm film, the photographs exhibit the unmistakable grain of analog technology and ethereally capture the passage of time, exposing subtle patinas that become intriguing through her lens: grime and dust on reflective surfaces, weathered facades, marked monuments. Abstracting the urban landscape and the vernacular architecture of the cities Roby wanders in, the photographs sublime the commonplace and delicately reveal its beauty. Tess Roby (b. 1993) is a photographer and musician based in Montreal. A collector of images, she develops autobiographical photographic work that captures her movement from one place to the next. Fixations of light, space and time unite individual images to create bodies of work that are self-reflective, cinematic and surreal. Roby holds a B.F.A. in Photography (2016) from Concordia University. Her work has been published internationally and has been exhibited in Montreal, Toronto, Berlin, and San Francisco.
