The main problem with making sweeping statements about What Christians Believe is that most people don't know that they're heretics. I have folks in my own family who profess to be Romanian Orthodox but also believe in karma and the cycle of reincarnation. They're 100% convinced that this is scripturally supported.

Religion keeps people from rebelling and throwing out their leaders. Kings, queens, czars, emperors, chiefs, dictators, and “presidents-for-life” have convinced their subjects that they are God’s appointed leaders. This “divine right of kings” allows the leader to abuse his subjects without fear of reprisal.

Whether a despot is deposed or not, if his/her subjects are not religious he will likely not assume that the people will never rebel. Even in a democracy, we should not allow our leaders to convince us that they are doing God’s work. Evil or self-serving leaders always fear free thinking, non-religious subjects.

If America ever comes back from this, and that's a very big if, we are going to have to establish a lot more specific rules and laws to preserve our democracy from this kind of attack again. Clearly, our system that relied primarily on precedent, tradition, and good faith mean nothing to those willing to steamroll everything to get more power for themselves.
