What is a mentor? In scriptwriting, it's a character who teaches the hero something important, often dies at the act-two break, and provides that little extra bit of motivation the hero needs to climb tearfully over the mentor's body and get it done! No, thank you. Who wants to play that role in real life?

A Big Funny Lead
I knew I wanted my character in the new show to be a big comedy character. There are plenty of shows on TV where the lead female exists solely to be the calm, responsible voice of reason.
It can be easy to romanticize a passion or a social cause or a marriage or raising kids with tons of posed pictures and flowery words – but all such things are gritty, raw, rough, and painstakingly sculpted from our fully invested hearts. There is a lot of standing around and sweating through our shirts and seasons of self-doubt and all the frustrated parts that no one else can see. We fall in love with highlights but these were formed in the valley. Please don’t be seduced by soundbites and filtered photos and bowtie daydreams. Real joy actually hurts, but that’s why it’s real. We've come to expect that life can be a completely pain-free experience provided we're prepared to spend enough money. There are pills to soothe your body, and pills to soothe your mind. There are driver-coddling cards, first-class seating, heated floors, and ergonomic toilet brushes. Why should cycling be any different?
Well, when it comes to bikes, there is such a thing as normal discomfort. The more time you spend on a bike at a stretch, the more uncomfortable you're going to get. Your'e going to get tired. Your body is going to ache from staying in the same position. Even your bed with the down mattress cover and high-thread-count sheets will revolt against you and give you bedsores if you don't turn over every once in awhile.

I don't blame people for being afraid to ride their bikes, though. It's conditioning. As you grow up, no authority figure will ever tell you to ride your bike; they'll only tell you not to ride it. We've been subjected to a campaign of propaganda and lies our entire lives.
I'm not sure who's ultimately behind it, though I suspect its the same cadre of conspirators who brought us Forrest Gump, Pizza Hut stuffed crust pizza, and the band Creed.
