for those who haven't played starfield here's a basic summary of what the game is about
astronomers saying dwarf planets aren't planets is so dumb, "no this fountain pen clearly isn't a pen, see how differently it functions from a ballpoint pen? also for some reason we're going to continue counting calligraphy brushes as pens"
honestly one of the things about starfield that i like the most - and one of the reasons i think many people don't 'get' it - is that a lot of the lore and the state of the galaxy is implicit, not explicit
you are in a frontiers culture, a diminished humanity cut off from the past with a relatively small population. you are deep in the midst of a cold war, with tensions on either side and only the beginnings of the seeds of peace being planted (see the literal seed planting side quest in New Atlantis). this is never explained to you, really. there is massive disparity between those that have 'made' it, and those that haven't. you are shown all this very often, but no-one ever spells it out for you
could certain things be more explicit? probably, yes. but starfield asks you to take small snippets of conversation, of interaction, and use it to paint your own picture and form your own opinions.
