Birthday Card for my dad.
Three more boards I made sometime around July or August. The first two were for a friend. The first one was an unfinished board I had made a long time ago, which he was riding around for far too long. He asked me to re-grip it, and I did a quick facelift as well. The second was a new board for him I was carving from a deck he got for free, and the shape is somewhat of an update of the previous.
The third board is my new longboard to replace the Sugar Dancer. I decided to experiment with how long and thin I could push the wood. It measures 42″ by 7″ and the wheelbase is 28″ I think.
Some monotype prints, first I did in Printmaking class. 4" by 6" i believe.
Quick updates right now. A piece I did for a fabrication class last semester. Modeled in Rhino, laser-cut, and assembled by hand. I’m particularly proud of the fact that the roof awning is the only piece glued here. The corrugations of the cardboard allow for a nice shimmering effect when lit correctly, which was an unforeseen success. 5” corrugated cardboard cube.
Mini Koi Skateboard - 21.25" by 5.5" Acrylic on used skate deck, Element 3.3 Raw trucks, Bennett Alligator 62mm 79a wheels, Minilogo bearings. These pictures could stand to be better, but I've been working on this for far too long, it needs to get to the owner. Semester is over, it's about time i update this blog. Theres a decent amount of work I haven't posted.
Watching You Watch Them Watch You - CMYK Screen Print on Paper, edition of 11, 4 pulls ; 6 x 8"
The state no longer allows you to retake classes you've passed, so I returned to screen printing last semester as an aide. I had no assignments as a result, and got to print what I pleased, but when the first time students were in the computer lab to create their CMYK projects, I was trapped alongside them. Their prompt was "A door and a landscape" to represent themselves. I didn't take it very seriously, and decide to do my own take on a classic cliche. The eye in the window was taken form the art of a Death Grips album, and the title is a line from one of his songs. I'm more fond of this piece than I expected to be, I'm particularly pleased with the perspective of this picture, the subtle doorframe adds depth, and blends the white border into the image. I think it improves the sense of involvement for the viewer as well.
Lemon Lime - Screen print on canvas board & paper, 4 pulls, edition of 7 ; 11 x 14"
This was the first print of last semester, it was done with acetate stencils. I think that both the canvas texture and the aesthetic quality of printing through a stencil benefit this particular piece.
California Poppies - Screen Print on Matte Acetate, 4 pulls, edition of 49 ; 14" x 17"
I did this print this last semester, and it took a decent chunk of my classes to get it done. Technically it's two separate editions, on the twenty-eighth print I had to mix new colors. In the second picture, the 1st and 2nd editions alternate, the 2nd edition being slightly darker, and with streaks of gold. I've printed once on matte acetate before, and did this entire run on the stuff. The piece was designed to be hung in a window, but I used the transparency of the orange tones to achieve the middle tone, and it loses this definition when backlit. It tiles in either direction, and I had it displayed on campus in this fashion, but unfortunately the pictures of this are pretty poor.
A new wallet for myself that I finished yesterday. Prismacolor markers on a tyvek Mighty Wallet. 8 by 3.25 inches.
Creature from the Babe Lagoon, My final print. 5 by 7" ; 7 pulls.
For this assignment we were put into groups to choose themes and a size, and have an art trade at the end. My group chose "classic movie monsters" I really wanted to do something involving light refracting off a pool, so I made it work. The pool is just the Cyan of a cmyk, the other layers were illustrated. I did 43 of these in total, on a variety of materials, here are three of my favorites on canvas board, water color paper, and matte acetate.
The "Animal Within" CMYK self portrait screen print. Four Pulls; 7 by 10 inches.
Wasn't thrilled with this prompt, so I just overlapped my face and some goats.
A Roy Lichtenstein inspired piece with two text variations for the Pop Art project in Screen Printing last semester. Printed area: 8" by 15" ; six pulls
Really enjoyed this class, it allowed me to make my pieces as complex or simple as I liked, and I think the medium suits my illustration style well. This piece was a lot of work, and though there are still plenty of errors, the end product was very satisfying.
Another sculpture I did last semester for a repetition assignment. Plaster casts and acrylic paint.
A piece I did in Sculpture last semester. The assignment was to build a reliquary, but mine ended up with a bit of a sci-fi twist. My "sacred object" is one of my wisdom teeth.
Roughly fourteen inches tall, eight long, and five and a half wide. Made of wood, paint, cloth, and a shot glass and test tube.
Here is a bench I made for a Furniture design and construction class. The base is made of white oak stained red, and the top is Aromatic Cedar with a clear finish.
There was limited design for this class, as the teacher required us to keep the base to his design, but the top was our choice. I made it into a convertible drawing bench, though it is a bit wide.
It's been a while since I've updated but all I really have to show is school work.
Here are some sculptures I did for 3d Color and Design two semesters ago, in order of their assignment.
Materials: Bamboo Skewers, Matt board, and Apoxie Sculpt.
My Camera broke a while ago and I'm still not as proficient as I'd like to be with the new one. I'm not the clarity that I'd like, and it makes these new pictures a bit embarrassing.
Finally back to school! Taking Screen Printing and Sculpture this semester. Our first assignment is teaching us to make stencils, and I cut this for fun, an old Hook-Ups graphic someone brought in. Very pleased with the results, it came out super crisp. Unfortunately, I took this picture with my phone.
