action movie directors really donât understand that they could write the scariest, toughest, most badass line in movie history, and it still wouldnât come close to the moment in Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, when viscount mabrey of genovia said, âsir you will find that the word âfearâ is not in my vocabulary!!â and joe didnât even fucking blink before replying, âPerhaps⊠But itâs in your eyes.â
âIf itâs still in your mind, it is still in your heart.â

"It's not like that." Y pouted slightly when X paused, looking at them.
"Then why am I helping you with your third training injury this week?" Y did not have an answer.

Rowaelin, âRemember when you said you wanted me to fight for you?â
Aelin had her forehead resting against door frame, her eyes closed. Fenrys held a very drunk Rowan, who was mumbling incoherently. It was passed three in the morning, Aelin had been sound asleep when the banging had started, only to open it and find her best friend and ex boyfriend at her door.
âFen-â
âAelin, I know youâve never been punched in the face by Rowan Whitethorn, but I have, and this drunk asshole has been threatening me for the last hour that if I didnât bring him he was going to kick my ass and walk here himself. We were at a bar across town, he never would have made it -â
âFINE! Fuck. JustâŠput him on the couch.â She folded her arms across her chest and gestured behind her, letting out a heavy sigh as Fenrys quite literally dropped him onto the sofa.
âIâm sorry. Iâm so sorry,â Fenrys grabbed Aelinâs face between his hands and kissed her forehead. âI adore you, you wonderful, magical human being.â
âGet out of my apartment, you asshole,â she said, giving him a playful shrug out into the hall before she turned around and surveyed Rowan Whitethorn, the six foot four hulk of a man that was sprawled out on her couch, still mumbling to himself. It took her a moment but she finally moved to her bedroom and grabbed an extra pillow from her bed and made her way back to the living room. She sat down on the edge of the coffee table and lifted Rowanâs head, tucking the pillow beneath it.
âAelin? Baby?â Rowan caught her hand and rested it on his chest, and because he was so hammered she let him. âI miss you,â he told her, bringing her fingers to his lips to kiss. It made her heart ache in a painful way that she knew she would surely be crying into her pillow once she was safe in her room.
âYou should have thought about that before you left me, Rowan,â she said flatly, running her tongue over her teeth. Still, she let him hold her hand, let him lace their fingers over his chest if only because it felt so good to be touching him again so many months later.
Their relationship had ended because heâd broken up with she left for a semester abroad in Wendlyn, and heâd told her that she didnât need to be tied down. When she had made the argument that it wasnât being tied down, heâd made an outburst that it was him who didnât need to be tied down while she was away for such a long time. Youâd give up so easily? You wonât even fight for me? She had asked him hopelessly, and when he didnât answer, she had merely nodded and walked away, leaving him alone at his apartment.
âGo to sleep, Rowan,â Aelin said, pulling her hand from his and tossing the blanket that was draped over the back of the couch over his long legs. Sheâd barely reached her door when he called out to her again and she stopped, her hand resting on the door frame.
âDo you remember when you said you wanted me to fight for you?â His accent was thick and heavy under the intoxication of the alcohol, so rolling and lilting and lovely that it warmed and tugged at her heart.
âYes,â she said, unable to stop the burning at the back of her eyes.
âI should have fought for you then. I should have been this whole time, but Iâm going to now,â he promised as his eyes drooped. She didnât say anything, couldnât say anything, so she just nodded once and slipped into her bedroom, shutting the door behind her and cried herself to sleep.
Rowaelin: 96. âItâs Christmas, donât be mad at me.â
This was not how Aelin had pictured her Christmas Eve going.
When they got pregnant and Dr. Towers told them the due date, this wasnât even close to it. December 17, sheâd said. Your beautiful baby girl will come close to Christmas, so you can celebrate it with her.
But no. They baby had to be as stubborn and fashionably late as her mommy so she decided to come while everyone was eating the turkey.
When Aelin had felt liquid running down her pants, she had quickly turned to Rowan. âBuzzard?â, she tugged at his sleeve while repositioning herself on the chair so she wouldnât get stuck to it. âRo?â
âYes, Fireheart?â, he answered, looking deep into her eyes, looking for any sign of trouble and setting his fork down.
âI think our baby wants to meet us⊠My water just brokeâ, whispered Aelin, fear slightly showing on her face.
âWHAT? Your water just broke?â, Rowan whisper-yelled.
The whole table turned to them in shock and Aelin gave them a little apology smile.
âIâm sorry fam, but weâre gonna have to skip desert.â
That seemed to pull everyone out of their reverie and they started talking over each other.
âOh my Gods, Aelin-â
âCousin, we need to-â
âOh sweetheart, do you-â
âGuys, enough!â roared Rowan, standing up and helping her wife get up from her seat. âAedion, get us a blanket so she doesnât get cold. Lys, can you grab the packed hospital bag thatâs in our bedroom? Mom, help me change Aelin into dry and comfier clothes.â
â
âOkay Aelin, youâre ready to push now. When the next contraction hits, you tuck your chin into your chest and push as if you were having a bowel movement, okay?â explained Yrene, settling herself between Aelinâs legs after checking how dilated she was.
Aelin nodded, already so tired from the pain. Meanwhile, Rowan took her hand in one of his, the other pushing strands of hair out of her face and then cupping her cheek.
âYouâre doing amazing sweetheart. And youâre going to be such a good mother, youâve got nothing to be scared ofâ, he reassured her.
âHow do you know? What if I screw this up?â
He gave her a chaste kiss on the lips. âYou wonât, I promise. Youâre caring, gentle and sweet. This baby girl is going to be so lucky and have the best momma in the whole wide world, okay?â
She wiped a few tears that had gathered on the corner of her eyes, then glanced at him.
âBy the way, I hate you. You did this to m-â she cut out, interrupted by the beeping machine, indicating a contraction was starting.
âAll right Aelin, push!â encouraged the doctor while positioning herself closer between her legs. âGood job, keep going, keep going.â
When the contraction stopped she gave Rowan a death stare, the interruption just confirming her previous point.
Rowan chuckled. âOh Fireheart, itâs Christmas; donât be mad at me.â
Aelin opened her mouth to answer but another contraction hit, so instead she pushed like her life depended on it.
After a few more pushes, the baby came out, right into Yreneâs hands. She then wiped the little girl clean, motioned for Rowan to cut the cord and laid her down on Aelinâs bare chest, resting a blanket over the both of them.
After delivering the placenta, and filling out the paperwork for the newborn, everyone left the room.
Right there, standing next to Aelin was Rowan, face full of adoration and silver still lining his eyes at the perfect picture that his family was.
Aelin looked up from her sleeping baby and smiled. âDo you want to hold her?â, she offered, lifting the babe up.
Rowan choked up a bit, but put his hands under the little bundle that was his daughter and cradled her to his chest.
âMerry Christmas Buzzard. I hope you appreciate this gift because Iâve been planning it for nine whole months, I donât think anything is ever going to come close to thisâ, laughed Aelin, amused at the contrast between Rowan and their baby, yet amazed at how good they fit.
Rowan gave her a half sob half laugh and whispered to the little creature.
âWelcome to the world, Emberleigh Whitethorn Ashryver Galathyniusâ, he locked eyes with his wife. âYouâre the only Christmas present I ever needed.â

Have you ever loved a fictional character so much that you literally wanted to cry?
A comforting thought
Five thousand years ago, the Sumerians called the night ngi, the stars mul, and the moon Nanna.
Four thousand years ago, the Akkadians called the night mƫƥu, the stars kakkabƫ, and the moon Sßn.
Three thousand years ago, the Hittites called the night iĆĄpanza, the stars haĆĄtereĆĄ, and the moon Arma.
Two and a half thousand years ago, the Greeks called the night nux, the stars astra, and the moon SelĂȘnĂȘ.
Two thousand years ago, the Romans called the night nox, the stars stellae, and the moon Luna.
Kings and queens and heroes looked up at them. So did travelers coming home, and little children who sneaked out of bed. So did slaves, and mothers and soldiers and old shepherds, and Sappho and MurĆĄili and Enheduanna and Socrates and Hatshepsut and Cyrus and Cicero. In this darkness it didnât matter who they were, or where they stood. Only that they were human.
Think of that tonight, when you close your window. You are not alone. You share this night sky with centuries of dreamers and stargazers, and people who longed for quiet. Are you anxious? The Hittites were too: they called it pittuliyaĆĄ. Does your heart ache? The Greeks felt it too: they called it akhos. Those who look up to the stars for comfort are a family, and you belong to them. Your ancestors have stood under Nanna, SĂźn, Arma, SelĂȘnĂȘ and Luna for five thousand years. Now its light is yours.
May it soothe you well.
Anti anxiety.
